Indulge Me: Covers of Celine Dion?

Spare me the jokes (unless they're really good jokes), and I'd rather not get into a big discussion of the book itself right now, but:

For the book (which, by the way, is not coming out on the date indicated there), I'm in search of covers of Celine Dion songs in other styles.

"Covers" is used loosely here, as she doesn't write most of her stuff, of course - but of songs associated with her, aside from obvious remakes (such as her versions of Tina Turner, Roy Orbison, Eric Carman and, uh, AC/DC songs, etc). I'm particularly looking for versions of songs from Let's Talk About Love, and especially My Heart Will Go On, but not exclusively. And I'm not interested in other pop-ballad versions or new-age instrumentals, which are all too easy to find.

For instance, I've got versions of My Heart Will Go On from Switchblade Kittens, Los Straightjackets and A New Found Glory - and I know about the Satanicide version, though I don't have a copy of it aside from the YouTube video from the Daily Show anniversary show (anyone got an MP3?). I know there are versions by The Vandals and by Screaming Jets from Australia, so I'd like to get copies of those, and I've seen rumours that there's a Libertines version floating around out there. I'm sure there are more. While most of these are semi-parody versions, I'd be happy to hear earnest covers that operate in other soundworlds - I've got a ragga remix, and a Chinese Erhu version, for instance.

If anyone has any such things and can email (to caligariscabinet on gmail) or YSI them for me, or point to a link, that'd be terrific. But if you just know about some that I don't know, tell me that too. I've spent a few hours doing web searches and am turning to the collective wisdom of ILM due to Google exhaustion. (I'd be happy to credit helpers in the book.)

Also: See some of you at EMP in Seattle this week, I hope - come to my lunchtime discussion session (really, please do) or just come up and say hey.

(By the way, I've re-registered on the new version of the boards because I couldn't find my old registration, thus the new cross-blog-promotional name.)

Sealion Dion vs Cigar Ros - Bium Bium Babalo is a bootleg of My Heart...with some Sigur Ros song. I can YSI it later if yr interested!

Please do! Seems like a great example - Sigur Ros as the "cool" version of immersive music combined with Celine's uncool version.

I think I've got the screaming jets version knocking around on my HD at home. I'll check this evening for you.

Screaming Jets isn't as good quality as I remember, and the cod-reggae is annoying, but it's good fun for the first minute and a half:

GRIPE: The Screaming Jets version doesn't modulate for the final chorus.

Carl, do you have Meat Loaf's version of "It's All Coming Back to Me Now"? It's on Bat Out of Hell III, I believe.

Roy Kasten, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, good point, Roy - although apparently the song was originally written for Bat Out of Hell II and then bumped out to III, and Celine recorded it in the interim. So it's a kind of "hidden" Meatloaf cover, in a way.

Thanks for the YSI - but yeah, the Screaming Jets version is not very good.

'Cuz - thanks, I'll search that out!
