Which one of these bands is it most essential to have every album they did?

Tinky-Winky, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

None.

Ubu - All you need is the Datapanik box, and possibly less than that.

REM - Everything before Green, then just Up.

Replacements - Hootenanny through Pleases To Meet Me, with choice cuts from their spotty early stuff.

Pavement - just pick up the Fall Peel sessions box instead.

Mr. Odd, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

x-post: that's a great question. answer: none of the above; each group has records no one needs to own. (stop compulsive fanboy buying habits now before the planet *dies*!)

Mike McGooney-gal, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

I like things on every R.E.M. album.

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

In order of preference:
Pavement
REM
Replacements
Pere Ubu

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

I like things on every R.E.M. album.

And I like things on every Pavement album.

Drooone, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

the Replacements, I guess, though even that's spotty

then Pere Ubu - early stuff or that boxed set

REM would have a killer career-spanning three-disc set - something good on every album, but not enough good to merit $10 apiece.

Pavement, the expanded Slanted & Enchanted covers it for me (also includes an early Peel Session w/ "Circa 1762")

milo z, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 05:24 (eighteen years ago)

me circa mid to late 80s - big Pere Ubu, Replacements & REM fan
me now - yaaaaaaawnnnnnnnnn

(i never cared for pavement, but never really heard enough to have a strong opinion either way)

gershy, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

"Pavement - just pick up the Fall Peel sessions box instead."

i love the fall & pavement both & this is such bullshit man

deeznuts, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 06:13 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Odd OTM

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 06:51 (eighteen years ago)

Except for the Replacements, you ONLY need their early stuff, and then just the greatest hits for anything after Let It Be

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 06:52 (eighteen years ago)

Pavement. I wonder if people will ever get tired of dumping on their post "Slanted and Enchanted" output? Nothing is more boring than fans of the first record who never forgave them for growing up. If you're into them, all the records are worth owning - even the much maligned "Terror Twilight".

j-rock, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 08:20 (eighteen years ago)

j-rock 100% OTM and then some. Jesus Christ mang, Pavement didn't become one of the most legendary bands of the 90s through just ripping off the Fall.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 08:41 (eighteen years ago)

of course not, pavement watered down sonic tooth as well ;-)

replacements aren't bad in spots but IMHO overated & unneccesary

so: ubu. everybody need datapanik ep, modern dance & dub housing

m coleman, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 09:51 (eighteen years ago)

If you're into them, all the records are worth owning

Which band are you talking about? Could be any band.

nathalie, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

There are a lot of bands I like for whom that's not true. I would gladly give away my copy of Jane's Addiction's "Strays" if anyone would take it. As great as Radiohead are, I can't think of the last time I played anything off of "Pablo Honey", and almost everything Public Enemy put out after 1991 falls quite neatly into the same category.

j-rock, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah. Some of my favourite bands are favourites maybe just for one or two albums.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not familiar enough with Pere Ubu to say (tho I really like what I've heard)

as for the other three, Pavement's the only one that didn't release any *bad* records. Yes, I thought even TT was more good than suck...

The Replacements' best stuff is not to be fucked with, but there's a lot of crap to contend with.

as for REM, I can't really be bothered with much post-Green. Also Fables, Reckoning, and Doc all have some quality control issues.

will, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

I was being provacotive with my Pavement comment. I actually don't mind early Pavement but it just doesn't do much for me.

As for the 'mats, Let It Be / Tim / Pleased To Meet Me is one of the all-time best 3 album runs in history.

And as said upthread, REM is pretty much played out for me, despite the fact that I own all those early records. Except Up, which I find sounds like a new band.

Mr. Odd, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Replacements - Hootenanny through Pleases To Meet Me, with choice cuts from their spotty early stuff.

i would have agreed a long time ago. but as time goes on the only replacements i really ever want to listen to is Stink and Sorry Ma...

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

On what planet do the Fall sound like Pavement (well, vice-versa)? And why is everyone on it but me. People have said this before, but Pavement sound more like REM than the Fall. That is to say, not at all.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

That is to say, to me they sound nothing alike.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

i think they're a fairly obvious influence, esp. on those early ep's and parts of SE. But yeah, it seems the debt is often over-stated.

will, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

Hugely over-stated, yes thank you. The answer to the question of course is Pavement, as they can be both drunk AND interesting.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

The reductionist history of alt-rock to these four bands gives me hives (not the intent perhaps but it's the impact). Mr. Coleman gives my answer including the stated reasons, with Mike McG's caveat well kept in mind.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Do Pere Ubu really fit into this?? I can see the other 3 (or parts of them, anyway) as comparable, but Pere Ubu seems like a totally different sound.

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

omg "Leaving New York" just came on as I clicked on this. sounds so good.

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Can we switch this shit to:

The Embarrassment, The Great Plains, Run On, or The Urinals?

David R., Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

I've never heard the Embarassment. I feel like I really should.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

But Great Plains totally rule.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

david r are u talking bout the embarassment that did "Sex Drive"??

i have that song on a bloodstains comp. so. fucking. awesome.!!!!!@#$%#$%@#$%23452345sdfasdf asdasdcv

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that song is awesome and so's a bunch of their other stuff

the urinals are way rad

pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

Dude "SEX DRIVE" & "PATIO SET" & "CELEBRITY ART PARTY" & "D RINGS" (& Heyday in toto) should be in your immediate future, by whatever means necessary.

HI MATT :)

David R., Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

None of 'em. But everything Ubu did in the 1970s, plus a healthy portion of their '80s-and-beyond work, I personally regard as essential.

Replacements? Well, I haven't listened to 'em in years, but I used to think that their entire Twin/Tone output was crucial. I thought their Warners work mostly sucked, exactly like I did their Husker homeboys' Warners stuff. (And in no way was I ever a "corny indie fuxx0r" or whatever you call it.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

Pavement, yes except for terror twilight
REM, no, but they have some good ones
Pere Ubu, no, first one and terminal tower are enough
Replacements, none needed

abanana, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

(Yow! 4 replies in as many seconds!)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'ma punch anyone that deigns to re-rail this thread.

David R., Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

Pere Ubu, no, first one and terminal tower are enough

So, you would axe the first four singles and Dub Housing? That's a little harsh.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

The Embarrassment, The Great Plains, Run On, or The Urinals?

I recently learned, on ilx in fact, that the Embarrassment comp I've had for years sounds completely wrong, so I must hear it correctly.

But the Urinals, well, you need everything, and it's not hard. How about almost everything? I put all my favorite Urinals and 100 Flowers songs on one 42 song long CD called 100 Urinals. The longest song is the EPIC California's Falling Into the Ocean at a whopping 4:03. 8 songs under a minute long. Hell, 24 songs under 2 minutes long. That's how it should be. I'm going to listen to it now in order of descending length.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

All the stuff from the first four singles is on Terminal Tower, no?

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

All the stuff from the first four singles is on Terminal Tower, no?

ah, yes. you are correct.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Answer: None of these. Get all the Pylon records instead.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

"None of 'em. But everything Ubu did in the 1970s, plus a healthy portion of their '80s-and-beyond work, I personally regard as essential."

OTM

Stewart Osborne, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

(buncha x-posts) All Pylon = 3, and the last one ("Chain") is far from essential.

"Sorry Ma" is my favorite Replacements rekkid too; in fact, I would argue that they could have been included in that thread about artists whose career was in constant decline since their first LP. (I like most of "Stink" and "Hootenanny" and find "Let It Be" hugely overrated.) But man, those 1981 video clips on Youtube remind me why I loved 'em!

Dan Peterson, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

Pylon? WTF you been smokin, man?
