Man had it on the soundbelcher this morgen. It sounded dump but old.

that is your view of the album to which you are entitled.

Nazi.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

Srsly though - when was the last time you enjoyed putting your ear quite close to this music?

the next grozart, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

it's funny that it's not techno at all.

That one guy that quit, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

HONEY is great. i love it.

pisces, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

Porcelain sounds a little bit like an advert for Timotei from the 80s.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

no it sounds like a careers advert from the early 00s.

blueski, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

I like the bit with the man going "Ben! Ben! Ben! Boho art teeth my-lover"

the next grozart, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

"no it sounds like a careers advert from the early 00s.

-- blueski, Tuesday, April 17, 2007 2:01 PM (8 minutes ago)"

yeah i'm not 100% sure if i've ever actually heard the album as such but i know all the tracks.

That one guy that quit, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

Was listening to some of this this morning. Well run on specifically. Time has not been kind to this album...

kv_nol, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

"But though the blues and gospel and more gospel testify not just for song but for body and spirit, they wouldn't shout anywhere near as loud and clear without the mastermind's ministrations--his grooves, his pacing, his textures, his harmonies, sometimes his tunes, and mostly his grooves, which honor not just dance music but the entire rock tradition it's part of."

- Robert Christgau

da croupier, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

"The ebb and flow of eighteen concise, contrasting cuts writes a story about Moby's beautifully conflicted interior world while giving the outside planet beats and tunes on which to groove. Read it with your heart and hips."

- Barry Walters, Rolling Stone

da croupier, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

I still think Play is amazing. Not a single bad song. I miss techno.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

"Play is the condom of rock."

Brent DiCrescenzo, Pitchfork

da croupier, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

still eclipsed by its own shadow. give it another 10 years to re-emerge. (everything is wrong, being not quite so freighted, sounds just fine.)

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

"I miss techno."

ok as i said i only heard this on adverts but none of it sounded like techno.

That one guy that quit, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I played 'Bring Back My Happiness' out last Saturday.

Moby ('rave-informed') 4/4 stuff is better than Moby break-based stuff.

'Play' is still much better than 'Animal Rights' or anything he did this decade however.

blueski, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

Kids who weren't bombarded with an ad for every song or gonna rediscover this album in 20 years

Also I never knew Moby was so bad and hated. I told some of my NY friends that I loved loved loved this album when it came out and they were all OMG and made fun of me.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

The real question is why didn't I buy 18.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

It's mostly instrumental dance music with no verse-chorus singing. Therefore, it's techno. Or electronica. Or whatever you wanna call it.

"Flower" is one of the best b-sides ever.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

The real question is why didn't I buy 18.

Probably because "We Are All Made of Stars" gave the impression that the album sounded nothing like Play.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

it did?

blueski, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

it was hella detroit steve.

That one guy that quit, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

i really enjoyed this when it came out. i even liked the first single off 18. not sure why i never got around to hearing that one.

that one single with gwen stefani = the greatest thing she's ever done.

funny farm, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

they play instrumental shit from this on my pandora ambient station and it sounds great

and what, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Gah this is making me slightly angry, there is chilled-out instrumental dance music that is better than Moby by light years!

chap, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

Example?

I love chilled-out instrumental dance music but I don't know much of it.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

Bonobo, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Boards of Canada, Royksopp, early Aphex Twin, DJ Shadow even.

chap, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

The first three I've never heard. The last three sound about right. Royksopp's first album totally rocks, but their second album totally sucks. I would never even dream of dissing either of Aphex's ambient records. Total classics, those. And DJ Shadow? Hmmmmm.... "Midnight in a Perfect World" was really good!

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

i also listen to all of those dudes

and what, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

Check out Kruder & Dorfmiester's double-disc K&D Sessions (not entirely instrumental) - it's collection of remixes they did over some years, sequenced as a proper album. Bonobo's Animal Magic might be up your street as well.

xpost to snrub

chap, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

Will do. Thanks!

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

You're welcome. Sorry to come across all snobby, I think that's just what this board does to people!

chap, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

Guys "Whispering Wind" is a really great song, especially the swelling robot-Enya thing at the end. It's the best thing that Play-era Moby ever brought to the table, and it's not even on Play. I keep thinking it's a B-side to "Porcelain" because it's basically a minimalist flip of the "Porcelain" coin -- same melancholy, same vocoder (though on WW it's not doubled by dry Moby vox, which really makes it better). Where Porcelain is slick and corporate and faux-organic/crackly (and DATED), WW is stark and icy and hypnotically repetitious.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

they play instrumental shit from this on my pandora ambient station and it sounds great

Hahaha.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

I never liked Play that much, the singles were all great, but rest of it was totally forgettable. Moby should leave singing to guest vocalists. I just listened to Everything Is Wrong last week, and that one still sounded great. The dancey bits and the chilly bits and the piano excursions don't really make a coherent whole, but they all very good. The only thing that sucks on that record is the totally-out-of-place punk song.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

"The only thing that sucks on that record is the totally-out-of-place punk song"

i'm pretty sure i remember this, and i remember that this is not the case. IalsoSTR live he always did the punk one slow and "being born" in the punk style

Alan, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:13 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I guess it depends on whether you like punk or not. But at least you have to agree it's out of place (even if it's foreshadowing Animal Rights).

Tuomas, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas, if you ever visit New York City, you should check out Moby's vegan cafe called Teany. It's a pretty chill place.

Wrinklepaws, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

mmm, Timo Maas' "Loud" is still a good listen

the Dirt, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

Haven't listened to Loud for ages, but Help Me was a great track.

chap, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas if you're talking about "What Love" you're wrong

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

(nb I don't listen to Moby anymore)

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

is it cool to like this yet?

max, Thursday, 17 July 2008 01:31 (sixteen years ago)

im pretty stoned and it sounds great

max, Thursday, 17 July 2008 01:31 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i lisened to this a few nights ago (also stoned), and enjoyed it a bit.

Creeztophair, Thursday, 17 July 2008 02:10 (sixteen years ago)

WHen Play was out/huge I had this friend who was embarrassed when I found a Destiny's Child cassingle on her floor, so I told her I liked them AND MOBY TOO and she actually couldn't believe it

Niles Caulder, Thursday, 17 July 2008 02:16 (sixteen years ago)

We were riot/punk types

Niles Caulder, Thursday, 17 July 2008 02:16 (sixteen years ago)

Would rather attend a lecture by P.E. Wagemann than listen to this.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 July 2008 05:11 (sixteen years ago)

WHY DOES MY HOT (rrp) FEEL SO BAD (wep)

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 17 July 2008 05:48 (sixteen years ago)

btw the best track on this is "Inside"

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 17 July 2008 05:49 (sixteen years ago)

I bought a two-CD edition of Play, at some Borders on sale in the olden dot-com days, and I think I like the bonus disc more: "Whispering Wind", "Memory Gospel", etc.

Eazy, Thursday, 17 July 2008 05:49 (sixteen years ago)

I like this album better than Everything Is Wrong. still no Moby or Early Underground or Move tho.

I also prefer the original Early Underground version of "Go!" which was totally hot electro jamz instead of weak ecstacy-comedown bullshit

xpost Eazy otm

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 17 July 2008 05:54 (sixteen years ago)

this album always embarrassed me, and i'm surprised to find, reflecting on it now that i spotted this thread, that that's still true.

it always sounded like some jam band's electronic side project to me.

amateurist, Thursday, 17 July 2008 07:17 (sixteen years ago)

would it be fair to say that this album put an end to the 90s trend of sample/break/loop-based dance music soon to be replaced by one-hit beat-based electro-styled stuff in the noughties?

the next grozart, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

The death knoll of trip hop?

baaderonixx, Thursday, 17 July 2008 12:29 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think this album is bad, but it doesn't have anything as fabulous as "Everytime You Touch Me" or "Move" or "Go" or "Hymn". "Natural Blues" and "Honey" and "Run On" are pretty great still. The weakest tracks are those where Moby sings and tries to sound all emotional and delicate, his voice is simply too weak for that. I think most of those tunes would work better as instrumentals.

Tuomas, Thursday, 17 July 2008 12:35 (sixteen years ago)

anyone hear Moby's recent album? apparently it's one big tribute to his rave days

blueski, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

Moby's singing on Southside sounds like http://www.weirdspace.dk/HannaBarbera/Graphics/Zilly.jpg
