Ripping secret tracks on CDs

have you bothered to separate many secret tracks from the minutes of silence between them and the previous track yourself?

blueski, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

Depends on the length of the silence. If it's just 2 minutes, I usually don't bother, if it's more than, say, five, I do.

StanM, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

CD? What is CD?

the next grozart, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

I thought this was only a 90's thing.

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

It still goes on, I'm pretty sure the new Jarvis Cocker has "Running the World" after nearly half an hour of silence.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

Every so often I think about it, and then can't be arsed.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

i did it for the version of 'Oxbow Lakes' on the Orb best-of (rub of course because everything was so edited).

blueski, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

I did this for Running the World. And probably some others.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Always, I freakin' HATE hidden tracks. What's the point?

mp3directcut is a great freeware app that makes it easy.

Now if I could find something that rips track 0 hidden tracks, i.e. the ones you have to rewind from track 1 (like on XTC's Coat Of Many Cupboards box)..

Mr. Odd, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah those suck, I hook up the CD player to the PC as if I'm ripping from vinyl for those.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

EAC is the/my quintessential audio ripping program.

Stevie D, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

how do you get the hidden pre-track one tracks like on unkle and 2manydjs and sfa's third album?

That one guy that quit, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

EAC is the best but it doesn't see track 0.

In order to get to it, your CD player (not your PC as far as I know) has to be able to rewind into negative time from the start of the CD.

Mr. Odd, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

yeah sorry that's what i mean, uploading it to itunes or whatever.

That one guy that quit, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

EAC is the best but it doesn't see track 0.

That's why you have to tell it to rip a range (from sector x to sector y) instead of a track number. EAC -> Action -> Copy Range. With these hidden tracks in the beginning, you should see that track 1 starts at a sector that's at a higher location than 00000 (say 12345, then track 0 is 00000 - 12345 )

StanM, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

Surely these are an answer to "why use VBR", by the way, Steve? 320kbps rips of 10 minutes of silence = pretty stupid.

toby, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah? Listen!

StanM, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I still haven't gotten round to buying an Ipod or similar, but I guess it would be natural to use Audacity to separate those from each other.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

Btw. How do you rip the hidden track on Super Furry Animals' "Guerilla"?

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 09:13 (eighteen years ago)

Surely these are an answer to "why use VBR", by the way, Steve? 320kbps rips of 10 minutes of silence = pretty stupid.

yes! but having all that silence intact in a ripped track is stupid anyway. the only reason i may still have some is because i haven't got round to separating them yet.

blueski, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

VBR pisses me off because the durations show up wrong and also when I'm editing files to remove silence, boost volume etc the editing software sometimes gets confused what the bitrate is and saves the file at 32kbps thus making it completely unlistenable and I have to download it again. I always convert VBR mp3s I download to CBR now, I don't think it's worth any space that's saved.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I've used the EAC range thingy to rip track 0 (on Autechre's EP7, for example).

VBR pisses me off because the durations show up wrong

In some applications, yes. I think a lot get it right though.

and also when I'm editing files to remove silence, boost volume etc the editing software sometimes gets confused what the bitrate is and saves the file at 32kbps thus making it completely unlistenable and I have to download it again.

You should be editing a WAV derived from the MP3 anyway! And then save whatever you like.

I always convert VBR mp3s I download to CBR now, I don't think it's worth any space that's saved.

But cross-conversion = further drop in quality.

Sorry, but I'm a big VBR apologist - I use it for everything.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

surely wrong durations etc just = stupid software? also converting to cbr = reencoding = loss of quality, right? or do you have another method? (x-post)

toby, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

VBR is horrible, horrible.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, but normally you just click save. I don't have to go into advanced options and specify what bitrate to save as, it just saves it as whatever it was before. Apart from with some VBR files when it screws up.

Maybe to super-sensitive ears, but I don't notice any difference.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

Explain please, next grozart!

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

hahah i initially thought you meant ripping as in awesome/cracking

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

spiffing!
