Sensational - Loaded With Power C/D

One of the most fucked-up hip-hop records ever, released in 1998 on WordSound to general bafflement. LWP is totally stripped-down, slathered with oozing, rumbling bass and creepy almost horror-movie keyboards. The beats are not funky; the snares echo away into the fog that permeates the whole disc. His rhyming is weird, having almost nothing to do with the beat - he's just rambling and ranting, and occasionally his own overdubbed voice comes in, disturbingly loud, serving as his own hypeman. He keeps talking about getting played in discos and having hits, but come on. He did two or three more albums for them, each one a little glossier, until he wound up on Ipecac where he did one that was almost as good as this, but not quite. Apparently, he was also briefly a member of the Jungle Brothers under the name "Torture," but his tracks were excised from the released version of J.Beez Wit The Remedy, or something - in any case, I don't remember him on that album. I say classic. What say you? Am I the only one around here who's even heard this damn record, let alone been obsessed with it for a decade (not as obsessed as I am with New Kingdom's Paradise Don't Come Cheap, but still)?

I dled it from biffhop the other day, and have only listened to it once so far, but I'm not detecting the charm to it. I'll give it another try pretty soon, but I'm honestly not hopeful. As you know, I tend to like by rap to be pretty straightforward and to honor the rules of the genre.

two years pass...

a) "this is sensational/FBI disguised/we dressed up as phone guys/we devilish, we hip to that"

b) this dude's still putting out records! i can't believe i didn't know.

c) look for the crazy wisdom masters stuff, the unreleased tracks from j-beez with the remedy.

Really wish someone would issue that album officially. So ridiculous the way labels treat rappers.

Also sometimes I feel like Shabazz Palaces is the, well, not son, but nephew of Sensational.

Musically speaking.

Amazingly, I still have my CD copy of Loaded With Power. Haven't played it in years, but I just pulled it off the shelf for playage soon. (Might have others by him, which I remember being not as good, in a box in the closet; if I still like this one, I may even open them up to check.)

I have a fifteen-track FLAC of CWM: this what you're listening to Milton?

yeah, well, there you go

are all those different mixes from the J Beez versions?

the difference between the J Beez mix of 'Simple As That' and the original is about an entire album's worth of music in 5 minutes

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 18:05 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, they're different. What's the best way to move files around in this neighbourhood?

Call the Cops, Thursday, 14 March 2013 09:51 (twelve years ago)

Um maybe s3ndspace?

If you can up that I know Milton and I would both appreciate it greatly. I've been looking for the longer version for a while now and had no luck at all.

Should we redirect this to Leonardo?
