so my mom saw the movie and was touched. i think thats beautiful. now she needs some of her cd's. anyone have any advice? there are lots of best ofs and compilations but maybe one is regarded better than the other?

have the 'La Chanteuse Celebree' 4-disc box... think that's a pretty good one. Also, the 2000 EMI edition of 'La vie en Rose' is a sure-shot.

It wasn't only the absolutely impeccable singing that made her transcendent: the SONGS written for her were so interesting and unusual. Joseph Kosma was a fucking genius. You don't even need to know French to know what the songs are "saying." The chord progressions and key changes say it all.

"La Belle Histoire D'amour" is so gloriously dramatic. Breaks my heart every time. Those brass & string arrangements SLAY. It's no surprise Portishead's "All Mine" was based around it.

I forgot to set up my dvd player correctly before watching this movie and it was like, 3/4 of the way through before I realized it, everything in the sides of the screen was all stretched out, it was like Terry Gilliam's La Vie En Fisheye
