Best AC/DC Record

One of the best rock bands of all time, no question. But which is their best album? I'm voting the obvious, Back in Black, since it's probably the record that got me into classic rock/metal. But the choice is yours. (US releases, no live albums, not including Who Made despite original songs and obvious greatness)

I need to revisit them again, but Highway To Hell was always my fave. Back In Black is also great. Tough one.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 20 April 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

(that should be Who Made Who in the poll text, obviously)

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 20 April 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

"Live at the Atlantic Studio" from the Bonfire box set is the best thing ever, but all the Bon stuff is outstanding. I liked them better as a boogie band than the later more mainstream metal sound they worked with Brian. Though up through parts of Fly On The Wall they're still pretty damn good.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 20 April 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

I just hope "I don't like AC/DC" doesn't win.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 20 April 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

I may be in the minority here, but...Ballbreaker? Anyone else think it's way way underrated?

Standing In The Shadows Of Bob, Friday, 20 April 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think it's their best album, but Ballbreaker has some great tunes on it. Haven't listened to it in a while, but I remember really liking it when I first got it. Definitely underrated.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 20 April 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

If Bon > Brian is it possible that Back In Black > the best Bon recording?

Nope.

Therefore let it be written that the answer is Dirty Deeds.

NYCNative, Friday, 20 April 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

Back in Black and the Razor's Edge (and, I guess, Who Made Who) are the only Brian Johnson recordings I listen to with any regularity, but there's no denying that Back in Black is monumental.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 20 April 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

It's not the best, but flick of the switch is underappreciated. I was boring and voted for BiB.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 20 April 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

Flick of the Switch isn't painful to listen to or anything, there just isn't a single memorable song on it.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 20 April 2007 03:20 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, I just put it in to see if I remembered any of the songs, and found it pretty boring.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 20 April 2007 03:31 (eighteen years ago)

Let There Be Rock, obviously. And let's have no more positioning of that dull but consistent slab of indifferent road boogie, Powerage, anywhere near the top.

moley, Friday, 20 April 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

dude powerage is almost as good as let there be rock (which is the best, i agree)! come on, "rock and roll damnation" and "down payment blues" and "what's next to the moon," are you crazy?

pretzel walrus, Friday, 20 April 2007 03:48 (eighteen years ago)

(also stupid US releases are totally annoying, "problem child" sounds completely outta place on ltbr and "crabsody in blue" is a good jam)

pretzel walrus, Friday, 20 April 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

Powerage has Riff Raff on it. How can you not love it?

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 20 April 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

Also: "Sin City" and "Gone shootin'." At which point I think we've covered the entire album.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 20 April 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

One of the best rock bands of all time, no question.

No Question?

Bee OK, Friday, 20 April 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

i mean if you're wrong or something, maybe

pretzel walrus, Friday, 20 April 2007 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh, I'd managed to forget "Fly On The Wall". THX ILX!

Otherwise, a lot harder than you'd think. "Dirty Deeds" it is.

John Justen, Friday, 20 April 2007 06:48 (eighteen years ago)

Having to choose between "Back In Black" and "Highway To Hell", I voted for "Back In Black" because of the title track, "Hells Bells" and "You Shook Me All Night Long".

Everything they've done since the mid 80s is boring.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

High Voltage.

(And it's kind of sad how many people are mentioning Back in Black.)

xhuxk, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

HI DERE!

The Amazing Randy, Friday, 20 April 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

High Voltage, easily. It's gonna be a straight up tragedy when Back in Black wins.

scarymuppet, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

I'll even take Powerage over High Voltage, tracks 7 & 8 are probably my least favorite on either, but Powerage's are zippier. And tracks 1-6 and 9 on both are awesome.

da croupier, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Also, Powerage's consistent theme ("how DARE you even THINK of dumping Bon Scott?!?!") is pretty unique in the AC/DC ouvre.

da croupier, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Powerage for me.

Hey croupier, listen to "Shot down in Flames" on HTH.

Bill Magill, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

I have all the Bon stuff, actually! And I'm not saying there are NO songs about getting dumped on any other album.

da croupier, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

I am so happy to see all the love for "Powerage". I think it's the bands high water mark and a record where they (barely) move away from their song formula.

"Riff Raff" was the air guitar song of my youth.

kwhitehead, Friday, 20 April 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

LET THERE BE ROCK all the way

Stormy Davis, Friday, 20 April 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not a big Ballbreaker fan ... I wanted that album to be so good, was so psyched that they were working with Rick but...

Saw them on that tour though and they were great as usual.

Stormy Davis, Friday, 20 April 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

High Voltage

darin, Friday, 20 April 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

Powerage for me. Although it was hard to choose it over Let There Be Rock.

JN$OT, Friday, 20 April 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

High Voltage may be in the running. It is the one studio album I listen to most.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

1.Let There Be Rock for me.
2.Brian Johnson was no Bon Scott, but come on, he had his own kinda "flow" early on. That initial monochromatic trio of LPs was pretty solid. And "Flick Of The switch" is still overlooked (and great).
3.I wish I was familiar with the original LPs configurations for comparison purposes. Pretzel is 100% right to feel resentful that the USA releases are now the "official" ones. (Even tho the original Australian cover-art is, to my eyes, even uglier, no mean feat.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno, i like the aussie LTBR:

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s82191.jpg

the rest of them are a hell of a lot uglier tho, i agree

pretzel walrus, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

One of the best rock bands of all time, no question.

No Question?

-- Bee OK, Thursday, April 19, 2007 9:34 PM (Yesterday)

That is, of course, a purely objective assessment.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry pretzel, but I went with the US releases because, quite simply, those are the ones that most people on ILM have.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

bump

JN$OT, Thursday, 26 April 2007 08:22 (eighteen years ago)

Is there any particular reason why you're bumping all these threads?

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 26 April 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

Why not? A chance for people to get some last minute votes in? Or to actually see the results maybe?

JN$OT, Thursday, 26 April 2007 08:40 (eighteen years ago)

Gonna say "Back in Black" followed by "Highway to Hell".

novaheat, Thursday, 26 April 2007 09:03 (eighteen years ago)

Last chance to vote!

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

No taste tied with Back in Black! But hey, it didn't win. Happy, Chuck?

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 26 April 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

I expected more AC/DC fans to be on ILM.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Thursday, 26 April 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

People who don't like AC/DC might be saddest sacks on Earth.

darin, Thursday, 26 April 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, they must live lives devoid of joy and wonder.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 27 April 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

Lots of people on ILM just don't like any rock music. It happens.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 27 April 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

It's no big deal someo people not liking stuff. It's just strange that they would actually bother to vote that they don't like them. But people do so that's why I like to give that option (except for my Hüsker Dü poll)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 27 April 2007 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

You know, looking at the tracklist again, I realized that they didn't include the cover of "School Days" from the Australian LP T.N.T. So, even after this set they STILL haven't made all of the exclusive Australian tracks available to the U.S. market...

Plunge Protection Team, Friday, 23 October 2009 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

You can download that track directly from Walmart.com.

Dirty Deeds and Back in Black

the second verse to BiB almost comes across like rap lyrically, given the braggadocio...

my downeaster ilxor (Neanderthal), Friday, 10 June 2011 02:12 (fourteen years ago)

They had better songs on other records, but Powerage is pretty much AC/DC at their most raw powerful self. I'd almost say that album has the best sounding hard rock guitar ever recorded. It just f-ing roars.

earlnash, Friday, 10 June 2011 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

finally got Backtracks. omg "Love Song" is amazing and cements why Bon was the best -- so weird to haer that side of him, he sang that so emotively!

Nebuchadnezzar Buchanan (Neanderthal), Thursday, 16 June 2011 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

I changed my mind. Powerage is best.

what does pip mean

budo jeru, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 05:43 (six years ago)

My father's family name being Pirrip, and my Satanic name Philip, my infant tongue could rock of both names nothing heavier or more illicit than Pip. So, I called myself Pip, and came to be called Pip.
