not more, just better

blueski, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

hahahaha

Mr. Que, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

you should've included an option for people who don't like Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

we should have a poll to see which poll was the worst poll

Mr. Que, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

I wish you could vote for more than one thing.

blueski, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

I like polls, this one too.

zeus, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

You know what ILM needs? Some DC chatter threads, that's what it needs.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

suck it

Mr. Que, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

just kidding.

Mr. Que, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

six months pass...

REVIVE!

^^^^^^this. seriously, is it within ILX's technical capabilities to have some more sophisticated polling options? it'd be great to have polls where you can put in a ballot with a #1 and #2 and etc., or actually be able to write in what your write-in option would be. so many polls are more boring/frustrating/unrepresentative than they could be because of the limitations of the kind of poll we're stuck with.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

its a shame we don't have more exciting/satisfying/representative polls on a music forum.

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

yes how will we ever get cited in undergrad humanities essays without an accurate polling system?

deej, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

surely the elves in charge could improve the quality of our masturbatory meta nonsense.

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

i'm just saying, clearly polls on ILM, and their continued popularity, aren't going anywhere anytime soon, might as well ask if it's possible to make them better.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

interesting logic.

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

"christ, mom, if you're gonna make me desert, at least put some effort into it."

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

dessert

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

now that's interesting logic. are you saying i'm being ungrateful about the poll technology the mods brought us by demanding more? or that i'm being silly by asking for improvements in something i don't like to begin with (for the record, i don't dislike polls at all, or at least not as much as a lot of people seem to).

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

so many polls are more boring/frustrating/unrepresentative than they could be because of the limitations of the kind of poll we're stuck with.

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

no you know what? we need better polls. "What's the second best song on Rush's Signals" just doesn't cut it.

Mr. Que, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

haha i guess that phrasing is a bit awkward, should've been "less [positive adjectives] than they could be" etc.

(xpost Mr. Que also correct)

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

We need to know which album on the P'n'J poll of 1996 ILX REALLY thinks his the sixth best.

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

DJ Shadow's Private Press sits with O votes and I'm like "I KNOW THIS IS WRONG. DO SOMETHING, MODS!"

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

(of course, I'm not helping with my dumbass LOL VAGINA VIDEO poll, but whatever. ILM needs some humor sometimes.)

Mr. Que, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

first we improve the polls. Then we can laugh.

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

and then we take Berlin.

Mark G, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

not saying a couple updates to the code would suddenly make the poll results scientifically airtight, they're always going to be more of a laugh/conversation starter than anything else. but do you disagree that it'd make for better or more accurate results if we were able to vote for a top 5 or top 10 ballot in those things? how skewed would P&J itself be if each critic could only vote once for one album?

(xpost no Mr. Que, your Group Sounds poll was really one of the best poll threads ever. i'd vote for it in a poll thread poll thread.)

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

perhaps I should start a poll thread about RFTC's Group Sounds to get anthony off my case.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

I agree that the results of a poll asking ILXors to suggest which albums in a previous years' Pazz'n'Jop poll are the best would be more accurate if we were able to vote for a top five ballot.

We should install this, and then do every poll over again for several months. Or we could just bend over in front of a mirror and take a picture between our legs and find out what our asshole looks like that way.

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

hey i'm not pollmaster general here, i don't totally understand what drives the dudes who do weekly P&J poll threads to do all those. i've started maybe a couple polls and usually vote and post a couple times in other people's polls to argue some boring point, but i don't think making some suggestions about how the polls are made makes me some poll-worshipping aspie with nothing better to do than obsess about the fact that I can't vote for 2 options. poll poll poll.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

hey, you're the one that said you found polls "frustrating/unrepresentative"!

da croupier, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

i get that you're being a dick, i do the same thing on this board all the time, but you're definitely being more purposefully dense about this than i'm being earnestly dense.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

HO SNAP

YA BURNT

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

interesting approach, Mark. see, all i'm saying, it'd be cool to do that all in one thread without all the legwork Mark put into it. if the polls are all just silly masturbation meta converstation-starters, they might as well be easier to conform to whatever our poll-starting whimsy is on any given day.

(xpost responding semi-seriously instead of turning it into a zing contest =/ being thin-skinned about zings or not 'getting' zings)

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, i'm laughing, would probably be laughing more if he was zinging someone other than me, but it's cool. like i said, i'm a dick in the same way to people here all the time.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

oh i fucked that up. i meant anthony didn't get zings.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

haha oh ok. so in essense, i was being thin-skinned/paranoid, after all.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

and can't spell "essence"

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

we should have a poll to see which poll was the worst poll

There is an option for that in this poll. Hence I voted for that. :)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

alex otm re: more intricate polling options.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

Improving the options would always be a good thing I reckon. Not always neccessary, but could be in a few cases.

Like it should be possible to allow people to vote for as many track as the poll starter feels like. This, for instance, would have given more people the chance to vote for more tracks from "Something Else By The Kinds" besides the obvious landslide winner "Waterloo Sunset".

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

I promise to raise the bar with further terrible lyric polls as soon as i get the chance.

John Justen, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

looks like miccio learned a thing or two from his many pointless confrontations with james blount

and what, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

This thread is paying dividends I didn't even know were possible.

HI DERE, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

geir the last thing we need to is rewrite the code to encourage you to make more polls.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

Should we have more Geir on ILM?

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

make geir the mod of I Poll Everything and let's all move on w/ our lives.
