The a-sides would be a walkover, surely. So those b-side covers then...

What would be the A-side? Mine would easily be Blue Eyes.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

This is pretty tough, I thought a lot of these covers weren't really up to much. The Shaft cover is particularly bad. And I loved their covers of It's Not Unusual and Make Me Smile.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

Also crap - Cattle & Cane. Better poll might be which one is any good? ;)

Colonel Poo, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

I like Cattle & Cane. But I don't know the original. Falling clearly and obviously the best.

ledge, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

Although I only have hit parade 1 so I've never heard the last six.

ledge, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

I knew the original Cattle & Cane before I heard the WP version. I can't remember what it was that bugged me, I think they play the bass part wrong.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

Blue Eyes seconded for best A.

ledge, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Falling might actually be one of the all-time greatest cover versions.

ledge, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

I actually like "Let's Make Some Plans" more than the original version, so I'm going with that. I mean, it's faster.

VOTE FOR "STEP INTO CHRISTMAS" IF YOU HATE THE WEDDING PRESENT

abanana, Saturday, 21 April 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

falling. i despise their version of C&C

electricsound, Saturday, 21 April 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, I voted for "Step Into Christmas."

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 21 April 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

I love love love The Wedding Present, therefore I voted for Step Into Christmas.
I also like Let's Make Some Plans and Think That it Might. Wierdly, despite loving TWP, Julee Cruise and Falling, I can't get on with the Weddoes cover of Falling. Not sure why. Cattle and Cane cover I don't mind.

DavidM, Saturday, 21 April 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

I can't remember much about these. Really the A-sides were so damn good on this it's like who cares about the B-Sides?

Bimble, Saturday, 21 April 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

bump with link to generic Hit Parade thread http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=41&threadid=14787

also: Vote Step Into Christmas if you love the wedding present

I voted Ever Circling Skeletal Family. It showed gumption.

Groke, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

it doesn't say where these polls expire anymore. i think this one is this coming friday.

Alan, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

"Pleasant Valley Sunday" could have been a big hit A side.

My vote for best a-side would be "Flying Saucer" in fact the ending should have run on another 3 mins.

Mark G, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and did you collector folkz get the special box to put them in?

Mark G, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

"in fact the ending should have run on another 3 mins" MOSH MOSH MOSH

i never saw the box, but the wall chart with 3x4 pockets calendar-style for each single was very tempting.

Alan, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

I really, really like their cover of Cattle & Cane. Don't Cry No Tears is a good, pasty British take. Falling is bad. Pleasant Valley Sunday is pointless indie cover "fun". Think That It Might and Let's Make Some Plans are OK. I never heard the second half of the year's.

Alba, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

OO OO

Shudder shudder.

(And is it just me that thinks they launch into "Das Bremen Nacht" at the end?)

Mark G, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh, now I want to listen to Bremen Nacht.

Alba, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

Obviously outside the scope of the question, but the new BBC box set has changed my favorite Wedding Present cover to "Happy Birthday" by Altered Images. (Their choice of covers early on was just ... obvious contemporaries, I guess, but in retrospect it's like the post-punk crate-digger's dream, Altered Images + Orange Juice + Girls at our Best and whatnot.)

nabisco, Monday, 23 April 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

And "Getting Better," I guess.

nabisco, Monday, 23 April 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

"Pleasant Valley Sunday" could have been a big hit A side.

My vote for best a-side would be "Flying Saucer" in fact the ending should have run on another 3 mins.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

SeekAltRoute, Monday, 23 April 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

Falling is bad

what planet do you live on?

"falling" is staggering. i could make a case for it being by far and away the best thing they ever recorded.

i won't, because i think i'd be wrong.

but still. you are mad, and i will give you a chinese burn at the union meeting later today :)

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

No you won't, because it's my day off. Maybe, just for you, I'll listen to Falling for the first time in a decade or so.

Alba, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

yay alba. good on you. your day off will rock all the harder for it.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

ta da
