Preventing LP sleeve ringwear -- any ideas?

I've recently become frustrated with this phenomenon. Other than the obvious (keeping records vertical) is there any good way to combat this?

--I've heard taking the record out of the cardboard sleeve and placing it behind in the plastic one is effective...

Yeah, I was going to say, keep the record behind the sleeve.

i was thinking about this, yesterday. i keep my records vertical, and i still get some ringwear. i don't like the idea of keeping the record in the plastic sleeve.

Never file away your copy of that Feederz album with the sandpaper sleeve

Yeh, I don't like it much either. The vinyl seems so...unprotected? Somehow wrong, but I think I might just do this to all my records tonight.

Does it work for you Brainwasher?

sub-question:

How do you guys store your records? Crates, shelves, etc?

yea, i need some help, too. is there some product that happens to come in a box that fits records perfectly? because mine are just sitting on the floor against the wall right now :(

i've never had problems with ringwear.. maybe try not trying to squeeze so many records into the one area of shelfspace might help?

I don't like the idea of keeping plastic sleeves in the first place! (We were discussing this on some other thread a couple months ago, but the search function is useless.)

I've never had ringwear problems, though (not that I've noticed, anyway.)

Sorry. Actually I don't think I understood the question. My records are mostly in crates. And on shelves.

I think that was my thread but I can't seem to find it either. xpost

I keep my records (about 300, or so) in a bookcase with nine separate cubbies...Each one isn't nearly full, and I prop them up with miscellaneous cardboard to ensure maximum vertical-ness.

...but still ringwear. :(

Yeah, honestly, I'm still kind of stumped about ringwear even being a concern at all -- I've got thousands of albums, most of them packed beyond tight almost vertically (at, I dunno, closer to 88 or 92 degree angles than to 90 degree angles for the most part) in eight long wooden crates, with ones that don't fit in the crates either on top of the crates or (compilations) lined up even less vertically (i.e., room for more, which is a good thing!) on the bottom shelf of a bookshelf, and I've owned most of them for a couple decades, and I've never really taken note of ringwear one way or the other. Why would anybody else? Do people think their vinyl is an investment, or something? (I mean, I might sell some of mine someday, sure, but if it's in mint condition by then that'll largely happen by accident. Since probably most of it was bought used from Salvation Armies and flea markets and used record stores in less than stellar shape in the first place, as is anybody's vinyl collection if they have any sense and finite funds, isn't mint condition a pipe dream to begin with?)

xhuxk, Saturday, 21 April 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, those are all good points. Like you, 90% of my records are used and if I get something used with ringwear it really doesn't bother me. However, if I get a new LP and it slowly develops ringwear it's a different story! I'm really not sure why.

Ikea Expedit is pretty much the way to go for shelves if you've got a lot of records

or if you want the perfectly sized "minty collection" shit just hit up Bags Unlimited

So are you using polypropylene outer sleeves and still get ringwear? I have records I've owned for over 20 years with no ringwear and have just stored them in polypropylene sleeves - with the record inside the actual cardboard sleeve. I also sometimes have kept the original cellophane (slit on two adjacent sides so it doesn't constrict and warp the record) for an extra layer of plasticky protection.

I'm not sure why some of you don't understand trying to protect records...? I've got intention of selling my records, but I do like to keep them looking shiny and new. Would you want to drive a dirty old car around?
