Jana Hunter / Lower Dens

Is there no thread about Jana Hunter?

I'm on my third wave of listening to Blank Unstaring Eyes of Doom obsessively. There's a new album on its way, but I'm not even gonna mosey on over to myspace until I have the beautiful thing in my hands and have made an appointment to listen to it through uninterrupted. But if someone else has heard it or merely would like to join me in incoherently ranting hysterically about how great she is, at least now there is somewhere this can happen. If not, disregard.

I haven't listened yet, but she toured with Peter & The Wolf, so she must be good!

Tape Store, Monday, 23 April 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

Shit, I just deleted Peter & The Wolf off my mp3 player without ever having listened to them. I just assumed they were shit and I had to make room for that Wingdale Community Singers album. Which I also like. If you're in a download-ey mood, you should immediately download The Heatseeker's Safety Den. It is so good you might internally bleed though.

The split LP w/ Devendra is divine.

^^Yes it is, and her new EP is wonderful, contrary to what Pitchfork say. I easily makes up for her somewhat disappointing sophomore effort. There's no home is entirely ruined by having Palms at the beginning, after which everything is just completely overshadowed.

I know, right?, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Oh poor Jana. I try I swear. For the record the new one is called Carrion. It really is worth your while. Really.

I know, right?, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

No kidding! Where's the love, ILM?

christoff, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Don't bother.... Appreciating Jana will have to be a private thing. It would seem so at least.

Haven't heard the album or single but listening to live Lower Dens (new JH band) and they are GREAT! I hope the recorded stuff is just as loud and throbbing... When did she get so loud?

I really like There's No Home - curious to hear Lower Dens

This Lower Dens record is really good.

I think I've heard a little of Jana Hunter's solo stuff before, her voice is really familiar.
But this group thing is hitting me in all the right places.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this is great-
i haven't watched any of the live stuff yet but i'm kinda struck by how people are talking about how loud it all is - it doesn't seem such a step up from her last couple of releases?, really, though a sort of fuller, slacker group sound.

Earning your Masters in Library and Information Science is beautiful (schlump), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 23:52 (fifteen years ago)

agreed -- i'd first been listening to a live show currently on d!me@d0zen, which sounds pretty loud to these ears. but the album does seem more subdued than that show.

Still amazing. Lower Dens were great at the sxsw show I saw, despite having recently lost their drummer. Almost a year on the album is still played a ton at our house, as well as the live show I mentioned upthread. Great Mayo Thompson cover on their last single too (redone from earlier demo tape). Does anyone else listen to these guys?

city worker, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 18:00 (fourteen years ago)

I have been listening to it a lot again after taking a break. Do they cover a song from Corky's Debt? Would love to see a show.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, Dear Betty Baby from Corky's.

city worker, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

I may have posted too soon. The song Brains is excellent but side 2 does not appear to be my cup of musical tea, at least on first listen.

j. winters (josh), Friday, 13 March 2015 18:49 (ten years ago)

Cool! I only became aware of them through "To Die in LA", maybe I have a lot of catching up to do or maybe their (apparently?) new more poppy direction is just right up my alley. I'll preorder this one.

God, this album is so fucking brilliant you guys.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 April 2015 18:31 (ten years ago)

Hmm, that Pitchfork review made it sound like it emphasized the parts of Nootropics I liked least and toned down the krautrock parts I liked best.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 3 April 2015 18:33 (ten years ago)

Same. I find the new one horribly bland.

Position Position, Friday, 3 April 2015 20:05 (ten years ago)

o_O

okay, nerds.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 April 2015 20:59 (ten years ago)

I didn't like the new album anywhere near as much as Nootropics on first listen. It took time to grow on me. I still prefer Nootropics, but Escape from Evil is closing the gap.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 3 April 2015 23:11 (ten years ago)

Nootropics and Escape From Evil are pretty similar in the grand scheme, so differentiating between the two is really just getting into the weeds. I really like both of them, but there's something a little brighter, more sparkly about Escape From Evil.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 April 2015 23:15 (ten years ago)

EvE scans as much more direct and "pop" and...yeah, more positibe. NT could drift into some fairly abstract places that were less "song-y." But it hardly matters, both great albums.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 3 April 2015 23:20 (ten years ago)

just listened to this and will again. it is pretty damn good.

http://lowerdens.tumblr.com/post/126535297727/ive-listened-so-much-to-societe-anonyme-that-now

the society we live in is so fundamentally upside-down that without drugs or entertainment to mute one’s sensitivity, all of its wrongness floods in a priori like an atmosphere of needle-points. things that we find gorgeous can make us feel just as acutely the presence of their opposites.

in the song, “sublimation” is meant to represent both the idea of making the mundane sublime, and, in its true clinical sense, “the transformation of unwanted impulses into something less harmful.” sublimation, if you want it. an escape from loneliness and misery into acceptable forms of intoxication (entertainment, wealth, opiates, etc.) the trick is that loneliness and misery are also the products of our society. we’re given the emptiness of entertainment and the pursuit of money, and so we are left lonely and miserable, and so we are given entertainment and opportunities to make money, and these are empty, so we remain lonely and miserable. tears are appropriate, no doubt.

cool having jana hunter in the world writing & talking i think

Some great songs on this record, production a bit muddy for my taste but very cohesive sound. It's a record abt love?

Saw them live yesterday, was good but I had higher hopes. Jana a very good singer, but seemed a bit shy.

Completely missed that there was a new album until today. Playing catch-up right now, but I Drive is muy bueno.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 04:14 (six years ago)

I need to revisit this. I was disappointed on initial listens but might've given up too soon. I came around on Escape from Evil after being put off by the more pop direction at first. Anyone seen them live lately?

early rejecter, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 20:22 (six years ago)

It's a little bit cold, the songs never really open up in any deeper way, but I still stand by I Drive being a jam.
