Which rocks harder: Guns N' Roses "Appetite for Destruction" or Stone Temple Pilots "Core"?

This poll was prompted by an argument with someone who thinks that one of these obviously rocks more than the other. I disagree and believe that the other obviously rocks harder. Oh, and he insists that you can't allow "cultural context" or pervasive popular opinions to interfere with your decision. It has to be based on the album by itself, in a vacuum. Whatever the hell that means.

How is this even a question? I like Stone Temple Pilots, but no way do they rock harder than Appetite, not then, not now, not ever.

I knew this would be an Alex in NYC thread.

hmmm

dead + bloated, crackerman, plush, wicked garden, naked sunday

vs

welcome to the jungle, it's so easy, mr brownstone, sweet child o mine

i think "it's so easy" pretty much slays anything on the STP list, and "welcome to the jungle" hasn't *quite* worn out it's welcome yet ... but that's 5 to 4 and the STP songs are a lot better than the rest of AfD, which is a pretty overrated album ...

i could do a bunch of these based on my 9th grade listening habits ...

like how about "angel dust" vs "dirt" ?
or we could do "countdown to extinction" vs "siamese dream"?
or even "s/t (black album)" vs "too high to die"
"pretty hate machine" vs "nevermind"

"girlfriend" vs "altered beast"
"roll the bones" vs "no more tears"
"superunknown" vs "ten"
"seether" vs "dig" (ok that's more like 11th grade ...)

etc etc

(i think i'd vote for "core" right now)

"espontaneo!" vs "orchestrated and conducted by..."

^ gettin deep here

Core has heavier power chords, but Axl's vocals and Slash's solos rock much harder than their counterparts.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 23 April 2007 07:10 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe anyone would think Core hards rocker. I mean, come on. GNR has the riffs, the attitude, and the screeching vocals. STP has bad lyrics, weak riffs, and 'low-rent Eddie Vedder' vocals.

Richard Wood Johnson, Monday, 23 April 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

low-rent eddie vedder = low-low-low-rent jim morrison (aka STILL DOPE)

axl rose = low-rent ???

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 23 April 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

Axl = high-rent Geddy Lee

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

you can't really believe that curt1s

I really wish AfD would get a remastering job. I don't get it, rock records sounded really beefy in the 70s and in the 90s again, why so thin and reedy in the 80s?? Core at least sounds better in that way, but then, nearly every record did.

gff, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

haha I don't really

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

I think the non-singles on AFD are pretty underrated. Except Rocket Queen and a couple others.

Richard Wood Johnson, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

i've never had a copy of appetite on vinyl, i wonder if that sounds better?

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

Rocket Queen is fantastic.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

welcome to the jungle vs. plush.

i don't even understand how scott weiland could be better than axl rose, except maybe at being good at being addicted to heroin. and i actually liked scott weiland's solo album "12 bar blues".

Emily Bjurnhjam, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

whatever one had "big bang baby" on it was the best STP anyway

they both rocked so hard my socks came off but my feet really reek & it led to embarrassment at inopportune times so i hate them both because of it

These threads could create the greatest screaming psycho-arguments on ILX ever, you know (which means someone should do them.)

John Justen, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

finest STP moment - that one song with the video starring Buffy the Vampire Slayer

milo z, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)
