Two of the GREATEST dance tunes EVER, but which is the better one?
"Music Sounds Better" for me, although "One More Time" might be my favorite single of the decade so far.

groovemaaan, Monday, 23 April 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

the sonic middle section of "one more time," although brilliant, does sort of make me want to scream for bringing the beat back, which is both bad and good.

stardust's middle section keeps the bass drum groove pumping, and for that, i say it wins. and also it's in my 10 fav singles ever, so that helps too.

Love 'em both to death, but prefer "One More Time" for its total and utter uplifting popness and that intro sound which is like some sort of weird Euro-country harmonica or something (and the way the bass line cuts right through it--delicious). I've played the thing at weddings and watched elderly people get up to dance to it. But yeah, as a DJ, I've never made it through the entire thing because of that gospelly middle section, and sometimes I wish that part came a little later in the song, though it's fun to try and mix out of it anyway (usually into Michael Jackson or Kool & the Gang).

sw00ds, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

are you people kidding me, the tension-and-release of the middle section is what makes it so brilliant.

s1ocki, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

don't let it scare you

s1ocki, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

people will stay on the dancefloor.

s1ocki, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

don't get me wrong--I adore the middle section. just saying that at weddings, it's problematic. it goes on way too long for most people--they don't know what to do. (i imagine at a niteclub it's different, and I personally think the part's great).

sw00ds, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

xp - no, most people at a wedding won't, trust me.

sw00ds, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

then the wrong people are getting married these days.

s1ocki, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

true, I've thought of putting a clause to that effect in my contract ("at the first sign of patron cluelessness during the breakdown of daft punk's 'one more time,' DJ retains the right to walk, with full renumeration.")

sw00ds, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Can I just say - One More Time was played in its entirety at my wedding and everyone went crazy, including my father in law who is a Methodist minister.

admrl, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

yes!!

s1ocki, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

god, when i get married, i just want some yacht rock playing. dancing and sextasy is for the honeymoon, away from my disapproving relatives.

The Stardust one will always be the original. But "One More Chance" works better in practice.

rolling stones vs. beatles

deej, Monday, 23 April 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

One of them is by Daft Punk so obviously the other one (I have a general bias against French dance music).

oh boy

s1ocki, Monday, 23 April 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

lfam, Monday, 23 April 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

you do know that stardust was 1/2 daft punk and 1/1 french

lfam, Monday, 23 April 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

lol

jim, Monday, 23 April 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

I assumed it was British.

Music Sounds Better With You has no payoff.

One More Time has quite possibly the best payoff in the history of recorded music.

I think I know which one wins.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 04:57 (eighteen years ago)

These are two of the greatest songs ever recorded. Which one is better? Depends purely on my mood.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

I'm stuck.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and "One More Time" is a brilliant manifestation of the Daft Punk euphoric melancholy/melancholic euphoria thing, whereas "Music Sounds Better" elicits no emotional response in me whatsoever.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

(The lyrics are very romantic, though. They just could have been used to much better effect.)

The Reverend, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

'music sounds better with you' is amazing. 'one more time' leaves me cold and doesn't even SOUND good.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

i've always professed to not like 'One More Time' very much but the idea of hearing it v loud at a wedding or whatever does make me smile.

the idea that someone would assume Stardust were British is funny. first time i heard the song i assumed it was American! like a Roy Davis Jr type thing or similar. this is partly because i heard Steve Jackson playing it on Kiss FM and he wasn't known for playing French stuff (Kiss didn't really go in for it much iirc - at least not in the daytime). i was indifferent to it at first but four months later at the height of Summer it was everywhere and irresistable.

blueski, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

I did of course mean "One More Time", not "One More Chance". I feel like "One More Time" actually works better as a song. Partly because Stardust were overdoing the phasing making the song more or less unlistenable because of it.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

"Music sounds better with you" kind of freaks me out and I can't listen to it when I'm driving - so I choose the other one, despite the annoying vocal effects.

onimo, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

i love them both, but stardust wins just because. what a great song.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes I think Thomas Bangalter is simultaneously the best and worst thing to have happened to dance music in the last ten years.

blueski, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

My vote: Starlight by the Superman Lovers.

ledge, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

Music Sounds Better With You has no payoff.

it's ALL payoff! which, i can understand one might not always be in the mood for, but damn. MSBWY is not just a great song, it's a great human achievement. and i love "one more time."

andrew m., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

One More Time!

MRZBW, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

xpost to self--by which i mean i love "one more time" but it's MERELY pretty awesome as opposed to (hi dere) "heaven coursing through my veins."

andrew m., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

If we're talking french chart house, I prefer Lady by Modjo to both - it's got that sexy bassline after the "I can tell by the look in your eyes" bit.

chap, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

"Lady" is very good, very good indeed. It is a bit George Michael though.

Ronan, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

One More Time has quite possibly the best payoff in the history of recorded music.

Absolutely! This is so euphoric it's almost unbearable.

braveclub, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

ts: heads vs. tails?

deej, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

"Lady" is really great! I also like that song more than "One More Time". (Really, I think 80% of why I am not completely gaga over "One More Time" is because it's slightly too slow to satisfy my dancefloor stomp needs.)

HI DERE, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

music sounds better w/ you >>> starlight > the ladyboy is mine > lady >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> one more time

SusanD, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

yea, stardust for me, too.

poortheatre, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

ts: heads vs. tails?

Pplz in having different opinions? NO WAI!

The Reverend, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

nah i was just saying you and lex are both diff sides of the same coin

deej, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

that being the RONG coin

deej, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

I thought you were saying these songs are 2 sides of the same diamond encrusted platinum RITE coin!

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

it works either way, really

point is both of these songs rule

deej, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

i like msbwy more but the either/or startlingly arbitrary nature of both of their posts seemed strangely symmetrical

deej, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

My vote: Starlight by the Superman Lovers.

Goddamn this song is underrated!

PappaWheelie V, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, good tune. French also, non?

chap, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

Oui. Great vid too. Actually I'd prob go One More Time>Starlight>>Music Sounds Better>>>>>>>>>Ladeee, uh, hear me to-night, uh...

ledge, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

One More Time is the one I'd choose to listen to recently - maybe i overdosed on MSBWY. Flawless, I think, is up there with these 2.

roger whitaker, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think these other songs being mentioned are quite as good (except for maybe "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)". I would also put "Groovejet" and "Big Love" in the same pre-9/11-last-dance category (but still with the "One More Time" and "Music Sounds Better with You" at the top).

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

ah good old 'Big Love'.

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

Big Love - I LOVE that - can't think why it didn't come to mind

roger whitaker, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yes "Flawless" should be in here. And "Love @ First Sight" by Kylie, which was maybe the last time this sound could change yr life.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 07:32 (eighteen years ago)

Deej, to be fair, I don't hate "MSBWY" at all, it just doesn't do much for me. And please don't lump me in with the Lex. But yeah, that is kinda funny, I hadn't noticed those posts came back to back.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 07:36 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, "Flawless" is fun, but perhaps a little too... fierce? The tone is very different despite the construction.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 08:43 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh, I hate Flawless. One More Time > So Much Love To Give > most of Western civilisation > Music Sounds Better With You > Lady >>>>>> Flawless.

I'm a bit bored of Music Sound Better With You, I can't see myself ever being bored of One More Time.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 08:59 (eighteen years ago)

'Flawless' has that quite bad 'rap' bit. "walking down the catwalk like goddess but somehow you remain...modest" or whatever. I like the vocal effect in the chorus tho.

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:12 (eighteen years ago)

I prefer "Starlight" by the Supermen lovers to both. But one more time has it.

I know, right?, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

ten years pass...

I still don't know how to answer this question.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Monday, 6 November 2017 21:43 (eight years ago)

Except to say that the 20th anniversary of "Music Sounds" is like a half year away and I truly have never felt old quite like this.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Monday, 6 November 2017 21:44 (eight years ago)

six years pass...

i'm not really interested in sample chasing but it's fun to stumble on one now and then by accident
