Does anyone else think "Born to Run" is a big sprawling unlistenable mess?

Okay, so it's a classic song. In the canon.

But I heard it this morning and re-realized how much I dislike it. The freakin' glockenspiel or whatever, the overwrought lyrics and music...even the production sounds bad to me. Like everything's way up in the mix.

Anyway, I'm not dissing the boss. I just don't get this song's legendary status.

Anyone agree?

To quote myself:

I like how he lets the words of "Born to Run" tumble out of his mouth, like a horse taking a dump.

artdamages, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Big and sprawling and messy, yes. But quite listenable.

The Deacon, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's a big sprawling EXTREMELY listenable mess, just like lotsa other stuff I've liked (or loved) over the years.

I especially enjoy the sprawl of the deluxe anniversary box, with the live DVD and the "Making Of" DVD, especially the story about Jimmy Iovine biting metal chewing gum wrappers to stay awake and the one about Miami Steve walking into the studio with the idea for the horn chart on "Tenth Avenue Freezeout."

You are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay
For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart
