A Very Simple Poll About ILM

When did you start regularly posting to ILM?

(Please don't feel you have to comment on this - I'll bump it occasionally if it falls off the bottom. Not interested in individuals, old v new etc. just want to get a feel for the shape of the uptake curve)

I put in 2004, though it was right at the end of 2004.

Billy Pilgrim, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

i have trouble remembering!

03? I think?

gff, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

2000, good grief.

Alba, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

discovered in 2000, really started posting in 01. u_u

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

Same as jess I think. tended to lurk mostly though. So I can't really claim to be an old poster can I.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

to be fair, i'm not sure ive ever been a *regular* poster. More a *periodic* one. Maybe I shouldn't have voted...

Billy Pilgrim, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

Same as Billy Pilgrim

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

This is a depressing poll.

Nicole, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

2006. I'm a newbie.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

I should have put "posting regularly (or reading regularly if you don't post regularly)".

Groke, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

gosh, 03, i think

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

I posted in early 2002, where some of you guys tried to get me on to a WHO thread...

...But then someone decided to turn it into a f***ing Dr. WHO thread.

Keith, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

But to answer the question, 2003, I think.

Keith, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

2004, and y'all *really* helped me mend a broken heart.

i emailed s reyn01ds and asked for reading recommendations about dance music and he sent me to ILM

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

LOL thank god dissensus hadn't been invented yet

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

pretty sure i discovered ilm through simon's links. that or josh's.

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

2000 for me. I'd just started reading NYLPM-- maybe Indieshite.co.uk linked to it? -- and got here from there.

Mark Rich@rdson, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

i was on a road trip in triple-A in a hotel room. i lurked for awhile while still in the minors.

félix pié, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Lurked briefly around 2000 (got to it from NYLPM which I got to from I Hate Music) started posting around early 2002 when half the night shift at my old job got laid off and it was just me from midnight to 6am.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

I was living in Greensboro, North Carolina when I started reading it. I was just thinking about this the other day. I worked in an office that didn't have an internet connection (yes, I worked in an office that didn't have an internet connection, that's how long ago it was) so at lunch I would often walk a block to the public library to browse ILM and post.

Mark Rich@rdson, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

2002 ;_;

jaxon, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

2002 i think but i was lurking quite a bit in 2001.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

came here in '01, I think it was reccomended to me by Darren/LeCoq/Ramosi, who I knew from some weird unofficial Pitchfork message board that was around back when I wrote for PF. made my first posts that summer/fall but didn't really start posting regularly until maybe early '03.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

I forget.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

I found the place because I was discussing music critics with some other guys on a metal board, and someone told me that a lot of writers that I really admired post here. I read over the entire 2006 metal thread, decided it was really cool, jumped right in, and have been getting my ass kicked ever since.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

i started arguing with ned ragget in fall '03

i felt pretty new and pretty stupid for a good long while, tho

gff, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

My God, I've been here since forever.

If there were were an ilx Mount Rushmore, your face would be carved on it.

2005. can I stay?

Edward III, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

discovered it in late 2000 or so through freaky trigger. first posted 2001 but only sporadically since then. (too time consuming!)

ryan, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

february 2006, cause i remember making the horrible mistake of saying OMG I DOWNLOADED THE NEW TVOTR ALBUM AND ITS SO GOOOOOOOD and being collectively bitchslapped as a random googler talking about a less than loved ILM band. have since learned my folly. though i still like TVOTR. heh.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

July 2001 I think - I think I got in a fite with Momus on my first ever thread.

Keith, please make a GRAPH option for poll threads in future okthxbye.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, yeah... You forgot to mention that I should DO IT IMMEDIATELY.

Well, not a graph, but check here, in the next two hours, for the current ILX stats:

In two hours' time, they'll be replaced with sandbox stats. Just a vestige of my development environment for now, so check them while they still exist.

Keith - are you using the sandbox to have conversations with yourself or something?

Alba, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

release of 'work it'?

xpost

That one guy that quit, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

x-post I don't know, but FWIW, new ILX usage went up by 25% last week.

I'm not using the sandbox, but I am using my own computer to have conversations with myself. I am always right in them; just like everyone else in real ILX. It's just a copy from my computer. It'll get overwritten in a couple of hours with the real stats from today's sandbox.

Keith, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

new poll idea:

when did ilx start to suck

before you delurked
when you delurked
long after you delurked

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

First stumbled upon the site in the first week of '04 while searching for a Voice article of Xhuxk's; recognized several names I was familiar with (Scott Woods and other rockcritics.com regulars) and decided to stay. Lurked for can't-remember-how-long, anywhere from a few hours to a few days. I think my first post was on Ned's "The New Christy Minstrels...buh" thread.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 04:07 (nineteen years ago)

April 2001, comment about the NME on a music press thread, probably wouldn't have posted again if Carmody hadn't replied.

everyhit doesn't list it...

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

Blueski - have you just made that up? What does {27}-52->2 even mean?

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, it was a hit. In the looser sense. A HIT.

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

every(s)hit more like

alba why would you think i made it up?

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know. To annoy enrique?

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

it was a internets hit no doubt.

xpost lol

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

i did it to be helpful to mark, of course! as enrique did when he went to everyhit to check, but then upon realising it was not there and that he had wasted his time allowed the indignation to flow forth.

real men use polyhex

Tuomas, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:38 (nineteen years ago)

I came as a random googler in 2002, unbelievably, and have lurked irregularly ever since, occasionally posting boring banal idiocy and invariably being completely ignored.

so, in 2002 i was around, but i probably started posting regularly in 2003. frank kogan was the one who tipped me off to ilx.

CharlieNo4, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

late 2000, i guess - but maybe 2001 is when it started being somewhere i went to many times a day.

toby, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

Can it really be five years? Slightly more! I found I Love Music Christmas 2001 but for the life of me I can't remember what led me here. Nor can I find my way back.

DavidM, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

There we go - 2003 the banner year, 17 (of those who ticked) diehards from the early days, and a fairly steady stream of regulars ever since. Looks like the community's in good health, numbers-wise.

Groke, Friday, 27 April 2007 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

We ought to have about 10 for this year so far though! Oh no!

Scik Mouthy, Friday, 27 April 2007 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

Hm trying to remember whether I found ilm in 01 or 02... when was the greenspun exodus?

anatol_merklich, Friday, 27 April 2007 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

2001

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 27 April 2007 11:09 (nineteen years ago)

It's funny, I read ILM in late 2000 (and as I said earlier didn't regularly read it til 2001 when it was still on Greenspun) but never even looked at ILE until 2003ish and never posted there til 2004/5 I think.

So Tom are you gonna do the same poll over on ILE then?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 27 April 2007 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha ha, there's been this theory for years that ILX is made up of the same 6 people talking among their alter egos... now we know it's not actually 6 people, but 17!

When can we get "where were you in 2002" badges made? ;-)

Masonic Boom, Friday, 27 April 2007 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

my sister still usually refers to ilxors as `greenspun people'.

toby, Friday, 27 April 2007 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

Alan, Friday, 27 April 2007 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

blueski, Friday, 27 April 2007 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

I found this through Melissa W's blog and first posted in January or February 2002.

leigh, Friday, 27 April 2007 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

I came in 2003, sucked in by two concurrent threads lambasting me (a Momus one and the epic "Is Everybody Who Writes for Pitchfork This Stupid"). Lived here ever since!

Arthur, Saturday, 28 April 2007 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

This represents a good example of a problem with polls. I have been a pretty fiercely poll-positive person thus far but this is the one that shows me that although poll results are always interesting, poll threads have the capability of housing very boring content. Why would anyone want to read an entire thread of posts from people saying what year they started posting on ILM?
