For me it's "Thriller" btw. even though the single edit isn't as strong as the album version.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:19 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Smooth Criminal. Billie Jean is probably a better song, but is overplayed and doesn't need my help.

chap, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

Bloody hell Geir you have a lot of time on your hands.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

Geir, it's supposed to be one poll per person per week now.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

Ben!

onimo, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

It's gotta be Smooth Criminal though FWIW. Maybe one of the first pop singles I remember really loving as a kid. The bass riff completely stunned my six year old self. Was it on Thriller or Bad?

the next grozart, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, the answer is Don't Stop Til You Get Enough. Beat It second, Smooth Criminal third. Billie Jean I'm thoroughly bored of and never need to hear again.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

billie jean!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

Bad

xp

onimo, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

DSTYGE = the most overrated mj single. it's very good obv but not as compelling as others

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

Geir no more polls this week I beg you.

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

It's just disco mulch at the end of the day, yeah.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I could've chosen one the classics, but I pick "They Don't Really Care About Us". It's catchy as hell and has such an incredible minimalist beat, almost like the stuff Neptunes did years later. Plus the guitar break is totally ridiculous.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

As for more obscure choices, I was very close to picking "Stranger In Moscow", which is IMO the very best thing he has done after 1990.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Michael Jackson vs Q Tip! ftw

Alan, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

THE GEIRBOT IS OUT OF CONTROL!!! MAKE IT STOP!!

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

Wot, no "Ain't No Sunshine"?

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

Damn. That fansite I used as a reference must have forgotten about "Ain't No Sunshine".

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

don't rely on fansites for crying out loud

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

I know. But Everyhit.com was insufficient too as most of his early stuff didn't sell in the UK.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

"You can't win"

which is another one missing.

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

don't user everyhit either. use polyhex.

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

if you want to base it on UK releases that is.

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

Basing a poll about a UK act on UK releases makes sense. But in the case of a US act such as Michael Jackson, it wouldn't. Not that alone.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

yes i know

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

But Geir, you are not alone, and your burgers are the best.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

I've been loving PYT lately. The cheese is so thick!

I eat cannibals, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

Wanna Be Startin' Something is the greatest song of all time.

groovemaaan, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

I maintain that Billie Jean is his only truly great song, though he has many very good ones.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

I have to say, the singles from History, namely "Scream", "They Don't Really Care About Us", and "Stranger In Moscow" are sooooooo underrated. In fact, I'd peg "Scream" as one of the best singles of the '90s.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

off the wall

deej, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

"Scream" may be his worst single.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

i wanted to choose "Girlfriend" but i went with "Rock with you."

poortheatre, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

"The Girl is Mine."

Tape Store, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, if we're talking about single covers...http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/tapestore/girlismine.jpg

Tape Store, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

WHERE'S "MORPHINE"?!?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't a single.

: (

The Reverend, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

I thought it was. Oh well.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

"off the wall"

tricky, Thursday, 26 April 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

Not a surprising winner, but a surprising margin, given the enormous competition.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

I never even saw this poll. :(

Billie Jean is great though. I might have voted for that.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

stranger in moscow

dknytodd, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

Ben got 4 votes haha

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

on a side note "earth song" is amazing and so is the video.

dknytodd, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

The first time I tuned into the local IDM show they started off the set with "They Don't Care About Us."

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

i like 'Scream' - didn't vote for it tho. the worst song on the list is maybe 'Gone Too Soon' or 'Cry'.

blueski, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

'They don't care about us' is extremely underrated. Apart from the appalling guitar solo.

BenTyler, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

Best Voteless Michael Jackson Single:
"Bad"

NYCNative, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

Not a single, er, single from Bad!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

Interesting that nothing from Dangerous got a single vote.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

"They Don't Care About Us" is unfinished. It needs a verse, a bridge and some chords in the background. One of the worst tracks on the "HIStory" album IMO.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

it has chords in the background you retard

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 21 June 2007 03:33 (eighteen years ago)

he must be so stupid he is incapable of hearing them

later arpeggiator, Thursday, 21 June 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

but not as stupid as the dude who said michael jackson's only great song was billie jean. THAT guy's a retard. so so wrong.

later arpeggiator, Thursday, 21 June 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

"They Don't Really Care About Us" also has verses and bridges. Geir = RONG

The Reverend, Thursday, 21 June 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

"but not as stupid as the dude who said michael jackson's only great song was billie jean. THAT guy's a retard. so so wrong."

sigh...

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 21 June 2007 06:37 (eighteen years ago)

I missed this poll originally, but would have had a hard time voting between "In the Closet" and "Billie Jean". I'm leaning toward "In the Closet". I think it's his "Elvis 68 comeback special" single: as fierce beats as he ever got, a homo-suggestive title, a creepy lyric. I think it's what he was trying for with "Smooth Criminal", but failed. And I love the video. I wonder if there are any good recent remixes of it, with even better beats?

Euler, Thursday, 21 June 2007 09:01 (eighteen years ago)

"In The Closet" was originally meant as the big superstar duet between Michael Jackson and Madonna. Madonna's voice is still heard in the bridge.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 21 June 2007 11:24 (eighteen years ago)

No votes for Earth Song, which my kids love - though they might have voted for Smooth Criminal before it. I'm happy to see Ben getting some votes, it's the first Jacko song I remember hearing as a kid and I named my rabbit Ben.

onimo, Thursday, 21 June 2007 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

"sigh..."

if i thought he could understand what i'm saying i'd probably fight him

later arpeggiator, Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I've ver heard "Ben"

The Reverend, Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)
