have you guys ever done this or seen it done? I can see how some artists might be flattered, but, in general, isn't it kind of a dick move?

One of my friends was DJing at a bar and Bloc Party came in. they were going wild, spraying champagne everywhere etc until she put on one of their songs. then they got really quiet and sat down.

i control the music at the restaurant where i work, and waiters always want to plug in their iPods when musicians come in, but i always veto, especially if it's someone that's recognizable that other tables are whispering about. you can usually tell if someone doesn't want to be recognized.

i think i'd do it if ghost-face came in, but not, say, david bowie. i WOULD have done it last week when the giant guy from the Liars was there, but I didn't have any of their music with me.

it seems like it could be pretty malicious in the right atmosphere.

i once put on I Shot The Sheriff when the cops came in the club looking to bust it up. they started laughing then retreated immediately. huge roar from the crowd made me feel like an outlaw hero.

there used to be this blog i read that had a hilarious story about djing in a club when beanie sigel came in and accidentally interrupting the previous song when he tried to cue up a sigel track and discovered the only thing he had was some napster-era poor quality mp3 from a dj clue mixtape. trainwreck

Ha, I had this happen to me at a MUSIC STORE once (based on the band sweatshirt I was wearing).

xp: ha! I put on the "COPS" theme song at a party busy being busted by the fuzz. They were not amused.

I wouldn't put on "Good Vibrations" if Mark Wahlberg came in and was trying to have some quiet time with his date.

i've done it a few times when it's been a friend of mine who has come in to try and embarrass them. i also once had ari up ask me to play some slits and was happy to oblige.
