Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:13 (eighteen years ago)

And I picked the obvious winner myself.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:13 (eighteen years ago)

No, you missed out "chips from the chocolate teapot" !!!

Mark G, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

Also: Did you get that "fuzzy warbles" boxset? If not why not?

Mark G, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

"Drums and Wires" for me (because, let's face it, "Skylarking" is going to walk it)

Tom D., Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

XXPost Hmmm. I might have included that one, but strictly speaking it's by Dukes Of Stratosphear.

Haven't gotten "Fuzzy Warbles" yet, but I'm pretty sure I'll go for it at some stage. Never been a big demos fan though.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

Sure, Tom, this will be "Skylarking" ahead of "Black Sea" and I'll be very surprised by anything else.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

xpost well, so much of it is "home studio" accent on Studio, rather than 'demo'.

It's even better than Pete Townsend's...

Mark G, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

Skylarking is a bit chocolate-boxy for my liking sometimes. Not as much as the next two after it mind you.

I voted for "Mummer", not wholly for sentimental reasons, it's the album where I think they get closest to that mystic Englishness they keep reaching for, and I love the vague historical concept theme - it's like a Pop Puck Of Pook's Hill! Shame about "Wonderland" being crap.

Second would be Black Sea, third Skylarking, fourth Apple Venus.

Groke, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

I lost all interest circa Nonsuch.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

Easy : Go2.

I hope flippin' Skylarking doesn't win. I'd be happy with Black Sea, Drums and Wires or English Settlement, but obv Go2 won't win.

Dr.C, Thursday, 26 April 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

"Go 2" wins the prize for best cover. Other than that, it's probably my least favourite XTC album.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 April 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

It's my least favourite XTC album cover

Tom D., Thursday, 26 April 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

Go2 is welllll WEAPONNNNNNNN!!!

Mark G, Thursday, 26 April 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

I love most of their singles, but strangely enough English Settlement is the only album I care for as a whole.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Today it's Skylarking, but perhaps yesterday it would have been Drums and Wires.

zeus, Thursday, 26 April 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

I am always incredibly surprised that Oranges & Lemons doesn't win these every time.

Davey D, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

black sea and i didnt even have to think twice

strongohulkington, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

I own English Settlement and Skylarking, and eventually gave up.
I finally heard Drums & Wires the other day in my friend's car, and it shits all over both of those albums.

So, Drums & Wires for now. Hopefully I'll be able to work my way back to the others.

Z S, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

"Skylarking" easy - Geir you should really get the Fuzzy Warbles box. I have 5 of 'em (gotta order the other two from the Ape website) and the vast majority of it is "studio" quality.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Geir correct, Black Sea vs. Skylarking. The one that got me obsessed with them remains my favorite though, and that's English Settlement. (American single disk, amazingly I still haven't heard the other tracks.)

Dan Peterson, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

White Music for me - but Black Sea, English Settlement and Apple Venus were all contenders.

Stewart Osborne, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

Well, for me it would be "Skylarking" Vs. "Nonsuch", only "Skylarking" is considerably better anyway.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

It would have been English Settlement for me in the past, but I think I am switching to Drums & Wires since it's a better overall listen that English Settlement. Everything from Skylarking on is very expendable. Oranges & Lemons? Yeah, I bought that and liked it for a bit, and then found it really repulsive after a while.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Can we give give "Mayor of Simpleton" a prize for top 10 pop bassline of all time? I think I'm going "Drums & Wires", though.

ellaguru, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

I think for some reason I voted for Wasp Star yesterday while drunk. please to be implementing precautionary measures to keep this from happening again

bernard snowy, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

but that album does have some absolutely rocking slabs of poppy goodness (WHAT DO THESE STRINGS OF WORDS I'M TYPING EVEN MEAN), so maybe it's for the best that I didn't go with dishwater dull nostalgia pick English Settlement

bernard snowy, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

Agree with Bernard on "Wasp Star." If there are people who love Andy's throwaways ("Fuzzy Warbles") why wouldn't they like the stuff he thought was some of the best electric stuff the group did in their Wilderness Years? Love, love "Playground."

ellaguru, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

"Wasp Star" is not at all bad. In fact, every album XTC released from "Skylarking" onwards was great.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 April 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

i'm listening to black sea for the first time and the last track "travels in nihilon" sounds like it must've been a massive influence on the early 90s us emo sound, esp. like heroin and unwound circa repetition and the more post-punk sounding stuff. i'm sure it is just me subjectively joining the dots but check it out! really like the track that ends with a short circuiting drum machine as well. where do i go next for more of this stuff and less of the zombies/kinks esque little englandisms?

creme1, Thursday, 26 April 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

I like how XTC fans never agree on anything, really. Everyone seems to love particular albums/songs that I hate ("Playground"? "The Big Express"? blech) and vice versa. perhaps a testament to the band's versatility

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 26 April 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Alright then, I may be the only one to vote for -The Big Express-. Absolutely crackers, every single track, culminating in "This World Over". Perfection.

And -Wasp Star- was dreadful the last time I listened. "I'm The Man Who Murdered Love" in particular is the worst thing Andy's ever written. And I own everything he's written.

Mr. Odd, Friday, 27 April 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

A surprise winner. I mean, not like "Drums & Wires" is one I would have expected to see way down in the list, but still surprising. Seems like the expected "Black Sea" fans have voted for "Drums & Wires" instead (they are obviously musically related)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

Drums & Wire may have won because of all the old timer XTC fans around here, people who maybe first heard XTC in the form of "Making Plans for Nigel" c. 1979. (When did that actually come out? I hope it was out by then.)

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

That was the first XTC song I remember hearing, so much so that I didn't even know it was buy XTC until two or three years later. (This is obviously talking from the American context. I'm not sure that would have happened if I lived in England.)

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

It was their first hit at least. Surely there were two albums before it, but you are probably right "Drums & Wires" is an obvious oldtimers pick.

But still, "Black Sea" remains the canon's favourite from that era.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

Who voted for The Big Express? I'd love to know, considering my as-yet-unsatisfied desire to hear said record.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

i'm listening to black sea for the first time and the last track "travels in nihilon" sounds like it must've been a massive influence on the early 90s us emo sound, esp. like heroin and unwound circa repetition and the more post-punk sounding stuff. i'm sure it is just me subjectively joining the dots but check it out! really like the track that ends with a short circuiting drum machine as well. where do i go next for more of this stuff and less of the zombies/kinks esque little englandisms?

good luck. there ain't much of it (the "travels in nihilon"-type things) in xtc's catalog. in fact, that was the last such track of theirs to be released (well, ok, maybe "melt the guns" on english settlement, but that song's truly horrific).

interesting to see oranges and lemons so far down on the list. when it was released all the kids (xtc fans and newcomers) seemed to universally dig it.

Lawrence the Looter, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

where's gansta andy partridge??????

gershy, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

Only I like Mummer :(

Groke, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:48 (eighteen years ago)

I just listened to "Drums and Wires" and "Black Sea." "Black Sea" totally wins the cage match.

Davey D, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

Damnit! I didn't get to vote! Grrrrr....

Bimble, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

Oh well, I wouldn't have voted for any of the popular ones anyway. I probably would have gone for Black Sea, but White Music might have made me pause.

Bimble, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Not much love for Mummer here, i'd put my vote there. I think Drums & Wires is extremely overrated not least in this poll.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Al, I voted for -The Big Express-. It was my entre to XTC which definitely colors my opinion. I love all of Andy's work, and perhaps D&W or BS is 'better', but BE remains my favorite.

Mr. Odd, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

three months pass...

Does Nonsuch really deserve a 0?

calstars, Saturday, 4 August 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

Nope. But I voted for "Skylarking" instead, thus my second favourite XTC album didn't get my vote.

"Nonsuch" is very much underrated.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 4 August 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

let's just assume that one person wanted to vote for it and accidentally picked Drums and Wires instead

bernard snowy, Saturday, 4 August 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

Does Nonsuch really deserve a 0?

It was the album that killed XTC for me, altough "That Wave" is alright, I suppose.

Give me the clangy, angry, jittery, hiccupy early stuff.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 5 August 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

I love Nonsuch, and have even described it here as my very favourite XTC record. I'd have probably voted for it ahead of Drums And Wires/Black Sea purely on grounds of predicted neglect.

I'll tell you what also doesn't deserve a 0: Apple Venus 1. Probably my 4th-favourite XTC record after the three mentioned. In previous times it's probably been number 1.

Just got offed, Sunday, 5 August 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

It's Kick Colin night is it? :P

You cannot interrupt his tea stirring because it is his holy trick (imago), Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:04 (eleven years ago)

I love both of those songs (especially TSM, which has so many awesome things happen in it) but then I was exposed to the album aged 7 or 8 so it's pretty entrenched

You cannot interrupt his tea stirring because it is his holy trick (imago), Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:05 (eleven years ago)

xpost

Somebody in this thread or another said something like "some of XTC's very best moments are by Moulding, but when he writes a bad song it is BAAAAD."

Black Sea

Oranges & Lemons
Wasp Star

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:08 (eleven years ago)

I fucking love 'The Smartest Monkeys'. 'War Dance' much, much less so.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:10 (eleven years ago)

Fuck, I forgot the Dukes.

Black Sea > Skylarking > Apple Venus > Chips From The Chocolate Fireball > Mummer > Nonsuch > Oranges & Lemons > English Settlement > Drums & Wires > White Music >The Big Express >Wasp Star > Go 2

Chips From The Chocolate Fireball

Skylarking

Wasp Star
Mummer
Oranges & Lemons
The Big Express
White Music

The last 4 or 5 are more or less interchangeable though. There's great stuff on all of them. Mummer is the one I need to reevaluate/listen to much at all, really

You cannot interrupt his tea stirring because it is his holy trick (imago), Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:20 (eleven years ago)

I'm listening to Mummer right now. The guitars on 'Love On A Farmboy's Wages' are so fucking beautiful.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:36 (eleven years ago)

THIS.

Dave Depper (Davey D), Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:37 (eleven years ago)

I might've said that about Colin, and I can't stand his post-O&L songs aside from one or two. Just awful. Having said that, the worst thing bearing the XTC name is "I'm The Man Who Murdered Love". So wimpy! Gah!

My favorite album changes from time to time. The last time I listened to English Settlement I found it just sublime, even the songs thst people often dump on like "Melt The Guns". Then Black Sea steamrolled me, then Drums And Wires, and Apple Venus is incredibly gorgeous. The Dukes material just gets better the more I listen to the 60s sources of inspiraton. I'm getting ready to go on a Fuzzy Warbles listening spree, detritus and all.

This band means so much to me, there's always something to revisit or dig into with each listen.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:40 (eleven years ago)

That Is The Way might be my least favourite XTC song tbh

You cannot interrupt his tea stirring because it is his holy trick (imago), Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:46 (eleven years ago)

Completely agree, those studio-era records (with the exception of Wasp Star) are so loaded with detail that I always find something new to discover somewhere in the mix. I must have listened to Skylarking alone hundreds of times and I still find something new to get enthused about.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:50 (eleven years ago)

Worst XTC song? I've never liked 'Blue Overall'.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 02:51 (eleven years ago)

Oh c'mon, "Blue Overall" is a trifle but hardly in the same league as "Smartest Monkeys". But I don't want to keep harping on the negative, we should do a poll of just Colin's song but I'd be afraid we'd get only 5 voters. Colin couldn't write a bad song from Drums through Skylarking, really.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:02 (eleven years ago)

Mummer: INSANELY underrated, I have no idea with this and TBE are always lumped together as some sort of wilderness years

^^^^^^^ My XTC mantra

MaresNest, Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:05 (eleven years ago)

Standing In For Joe and Fruit Nut are particular low points imo

oh, and Colin Moulding Poll

You cannot interrupt his tea stirring because it is his holy trick (imago), Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:09 (eleven years ago)

But, but, but... 'Smartest Monkeys' has the echoing guitar riff, and great synth solo! I can't see any merit in 'Blue Overall' at all!

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:12 (eleven years ago)

I'm on deck to run an XTC tracks poll in a couple months. Just FYI

How dare you tarnish the reputation of Turturro's yodel (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:13 (eleven years ago)

In Loving Memory Of A Name, that lovely quiet section halfway through with the one dramatic chord seems to say so much about middle England, I'm not even sure how.

MaresNest, Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:14 (eleven years ago)

I've always wanted to cut together all of XTC's middle eights in chronological order, one day I will sharpen my axe and do it.

MaresNest, Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:16 (eleven years ago)

I think Chips should be counted as two records; 25 O'Clock and Psonic Psunspot were recorded, and originally released, two years apart.

I prefer the former, at least in part because it gets the production style eerily spot-on. You could easily convince someone this was some lost 60s band, whereas Psonic has relatively contemporary-sounding production.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:20 (eleven years ago)

I've done this before, but I'm gonna list everything that's good about The Smartest Monkeys

- echoey guitar riff
- intriguingly distant keyboards
- moulding being a sardonic fucker
- in addition, a sardonically cheesy prechorus
- chorus contains echoey riff with cleaner tone
- subtle keychange into second verse
- arresting synth orchestration
- SIREN
- fucking beautiful countermelody from guitar in first part of middle eight
- SYNTH SOLO over a gorgeous organ chord
- all of the bassline
- fretboard squeak into chorus reprise
- SYNCOPATED BIT
- by the end it's pretty much a bass solo
- SYNCOPATED BIT AGAIN IN FADEOUT
- BOOM BING BOOM BOM CHA oh wait that's the next song

You cannot interrupt his tea stirring because it is his holy trick (imago), Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:31 (eleven years ago)

It's all good apart from the Omar Hakim drumbeat and 'Quick! call the GBOR'

Recrrrrrds.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:42 (eleven years ago)

I've got Drums & Wires on now, and one track on there which astounds me is 'Millions'... just recently I realised that I've actually been listening to this song "wrong" for years. It took me a long time to find where the "one" was.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:48 (eleven years ago)

Oh yeah, that happens every time to me. I loved hearing that Go 2 outtake with the guitar line from Millions for the first time.

MaresNest, Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:56 (eleven years ago)

Even now, right at the beginning of 'Millions', it throws me off as to where the "one" is, it usually takes a few bars before my brain adjusts to where it is. It plays tricks on my brain, that damn song.

(The "we" at the beginning of the first line falls on the second beat of the bar).

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 04:01 (eleven years ago)

Just looking at that Colin Moulding poll. Along with some obvious masterpieces (Nigel, Generals & Majors, Grass etc.) He did some brilliant album tracks that I kind of forget about. Dying, My Bird Performs and Cynical Days are all understated and beautiful songs.

Trying to think of a worst XTC song. I only really know their albums and a few of the B-sides I've heard as bonus tracks. I've always hated Across the Antheap. War Dance and Melt the Guns would be up there too.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 15 March 2014 04:15 (eleven years ago)

He has most of the best moments on their best record ("Dying," "Grass," "Sacrificial Bonfire," "The Meeting Place"). And I always loved "Nigel" and "Wake Up." At his worst, he's nondescript; whereas, Partridge at his worst is actively annoying ("Across This Antheap").

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 15 March 2014 04:40 (eleven years ago)

'Across This Antheap' is one of my highlights of Oranges & Lemons, though! That's a great set of lyrics.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 05:26 (eleven years ago)

I love 'Across This Antheap', the chorus where most of the instruments drop out near the end leaving Partridge sounding kinda lost is very affecting.

I would love to hear a de-kitchen-sink'd version of O+L with maybe Kronos Quartet on some songs.

MaresNest, Saturday, 15 March 2014 09:03 (eleven years ago)

I guess it's because "Antheap" reminds me of two things I never liked: Frank Zappa, and the Ferris Bueller racing-home-scene music (which I just learned was The English Beat, whom I otherwise love).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 15 March 2014 14:56 (eleven years ago)

But that's a great English Beat song!

The part where the entire drum track feels like its going around in a circle at the end in the stereo field is one of my favourite parts when I'm listening on headphones!

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 21:59 (eleven years ago)

Worst XTC song is 'Dear God', a) because it sucks b) because it struck the template for all the overly thetical Andy songs to come.

grape is the flavor of my true love's hair (Jon Lewis), Saturday, 15 March 2014 22:31 (eleven years ago)

it does suck but haranguing humanity is and always has been a big part of Andy's deal

You cannot interrupt his tea stirring because it is his holy trick (imago), Saturday, 15 March 2014 22:38 (eleven years ago)

It doesn't suck, it's just overrated.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Saturday, 15 March 2014 23:19 (eleven years ago)

Dear God is probably my favourite XTC song. It's not a cool choice but it gets me every time.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 16 March 2014 00:56 (eleven years ago)

I love Dear God despite its heavy handedneas. I played Melt The Guns in my high school senior lounge in 1985 and the other kids says "what's this jungle music"? Morons.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 16 March 2014 01:32 (eleven years ago)

I hope you said "That's not jungle music!" and then played It's Nearly Africa.

Hideous Lump, Sunday, 16 March 2014 01:55 (eleven years ago)

one year passes...

So if I've heard all of Skylarking a hundred times (big favorite of mine in hs) as well as bits and pieces of the earlier post-punk-y "good" albums and my favorite stuff is still songs like "King For A Day" and "Mayor of Simpleton," what XTC album do I need to buy after Oranges and Lemons?

Wimmels, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 02:04 (nine years ago)

Nonsuch and Apple Venus should be easy for you to like

Dominique, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 02:11 (nine years ago)

also the dukes albums, especially '25 o'clock' but both really
