Human League - the singles (Poll)

"Dare" would obviously win an albums poll. Which makes it more fun to do the singles instead (even though I think I know which will win this poll too).

Voted for "All I Ever Wanted" just to help prevent "Don't You Want Me" from walking this. Plus "All I Ever Wanted" was a surprisingly great single too.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 April 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

Is there more than one version of Being Boiled? I don't know which one to pick :-(

StanM, Thursday, 26 April 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

People should perhaps check their cut and pastes from everyhit before hitting submit.

Groke, Thursday, 26 April 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

I would vote for "Empire State Human" but only the version in my head that isn't really really quiet like all the copies I've ever had are.

Groke, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

I went for Empire State Human.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

Stan M: The two versions of "Being Boiled" here are one and the same.

(1 = the original Fast records release, the second was the EMI licensed re-release)

Mark G, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

oh, okay, thanks!

StanM, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

The Sound Of The Crowd. today.

Alan, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

The 12" remix of "Love is All That Matters."

Keep feeling fascination. Looking, learning, moving on, yeah?

jim, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

I CAN'T DO THIS!

Dr.C, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

I can't choose between Love Action and Open Your Heart, but I'll probably go for the latter. But they're all so utterly great that who cares which wins?

Dr.C, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

the position of "Don't You Want Me" will be interesting

Alan, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

bastardry. i can't do this. don't make me decide.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

okay. i went for "being boiled". several reasons ...

1) it's where it all began.
2) it's genius. bona fucking fide genius. even though the lyrics are confused gibberish.
3) CIRCUS OF DEATH IS ON THE B-SIDE
4) "okay, ready, let's do it"
5) pop, ker-hisss
6) DUR-DURR
7) what more reasoning do you need?

nb: if anyone else is doing the same, vote for the one at the top of the list, eh?

however ...

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

... i am using my other login to vote for "heart like a wheel", because nobody else will, and that makes me weep tears of blood. seriously: i'd take that song over everything on dare (except maybe "seconds"), everything after "dare", and - maybe, just maybe - in front of two or three of the slightly-lesser mark-one songs (eg ... er ... "only after dark" and ... HEY, GEIR, YOU MISSED OFF "I DON'T DEPEND ON YOU!" but that's fine, because it's not very good).

listening to HLAW now. god almighty. so, so good. the highlight of their glasgow gig earlier this year, too.

simon, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

I play Don't You Want Me and Fascination the most, I have more of a stake in Being Boiled, but at the end of the day, that 12" of Open Your Heart is just SOOOOO beautiful

dan selzer, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and the "Holiday 80" e.p. has:

Nightclubbing
Rock and Roll (as in Part One/Two)
And: Being Boiled (remake)

and the a-side was "Marianne"

Oh let's add the "The Future" track, forget it's name.

Mark G, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

"dancevision".

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

yes.

Mark G, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

i have about four different versions of "holiday '80", including the rare-as-rocking-horse-shit 7" gatefold (which arrived at my house, by coincidence, on my 16th birthday). i was a full-on HL completist when i was 15/16 (this is 1991, just for reference: an odd time to be such a thing, let alone to have a phil oakey hairdo) and i spent a long time getting my hands on things like the DoL flexidisc etc.

as i've said before: i've got tapes of some of the "send us a C90 and we'll fill it" stuff, and i edited together a "beginner's guide to the MKI human league" for a pal a few years ago, of which i am inordinately proud. if anyone wants to hear any of this, e-mail me.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I have that double 7"

It became a single 7" with "Rock and roll" on the a (TOTP appearance! Remember?)

Then it became a 7" based on "Being Boiled" wasn't it?

Other formats I don;t know.

(ooh, c90 early Human League? Count me In)

Mark G, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

i have seen that TOTP appearance, yes! on TOTP2. it is mighty. and yes, there were several permutations, plus mis-pressings, all explained at the mighty blind youth. (click "rock and roll" for the discography).

at some point later today i'll package up the recordings from the two tapes i've got (one has passed into league legend as a semi-official boot called "in darkness" and the other is just labelled "very rare demos and rarities") and stick them up for download somewhere.

in the mean time, this is the cover i did for the aforementioned CD, which takes in tracks from the first two albums, EPs, and the "golden hour of the future" CD and 12:

http://sparky.thehold.net/pix/070426leaguecover.gif

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

(front cover on the right, natch. across the inside of the insert it said: "NO MATTER HOW BIG YOU ARE, YOU'RE GONNA BE DEAD PRETTY SOON.")

anyway. thread derailment over for the moment. will be back with a URL later.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

I went straight for Love Action and now i'm not sure, dammit.

leigh, Thursday, 26 April 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Easy, 'Love Action'. Just hearing the 'pyong' intro has the hairs standing on the back of my neck.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 26 April 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

But where is the love for "All I Ever Wanted"? Have you people even heard their surprisingly good comeback album from 2001?

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 April 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if 'i need your loving' will get any votes.

leigh, Friday, 27 April 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

"Heart Like A Wheel" would be in my top five, easy.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 27 April 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

Was the Travelogue version of "Being Boiled" ever released as a single? (And how great thou art, Travelogue, esp. the gutwrenching prog wave epic "Dreams of Leaving" - would make a great b-side to ABBA's "The Visitors.") I actually prefer it to the single version. But I'm getting the impression that most people prefer the latter (e.g. Simon Reynolds who I believe called it the greatest single ever or some such). What's the consensus here on both versions?

Oh and "All I EVer Wanted" is definitely a contender. I was stunned at how good that whole album was.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 27 April 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

Definitely The Sound of the Crowd for me, with honourable mention to Love Action and both versions of Being Boiled. Yummy.

moley, Friday, 27 April 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

Was the Travelogue version of "Being Boiled" ever released as a single?

yes, sorta: on "holiday 80" (see above).

mark, and anyone else who's interested (and trust me, you all should be): yon demos/C90 stuff can now be found here:

in darkness

rarities etc

three more unreleased tracks that i think i downloaded from blind youth

obviously the quality's not staggering. but some of it is awesome. i see absolutely no problem giving it away: after all, it's exactly what the band did all those years ago, and none of these versions has ever been officially released.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 27 April 2007 07:38 (eighteen years ago)

Have you people even heard their surprisingly good comeback album from 2001?

YES! I talked about it for ages on here when it came out. I think I may have persuaded Grimly to buy it! It's fantastic, but...I have to vote for one of the Dare singles, as they soundtracked my middle years at Univ.

We ought to do a New Order singles vote.

Dr.C, Friday, 27 April 2007 07:45 (eighteen years ago)

Should the votes for the two identical versions of Being Boiled be counted together?

O yes
O no

StanM, Friday, 27 April 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

"I can't choose between Love Action and Open Your Heart, but I'll probably go for the latter."

You do that Doc, I'll go for Love Action and we can balance things out between us.

Stewart Osborne, Friday, 27 April 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)

I think I may have persuaded Grimly to buy it!

you did, and it's excellent. but it doesn't come close to etc etc :)

grimly fiendish, Friday, 27 April 2007 08:40 (eighteen years ago)

bump. keep voting, punters. remember: pop, ker-hiss etc.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 27 April 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

I bought the Open Your Heart 7" as a young lad.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 27 April 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

i care about this poll deeply. bump.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

also, people, FFS, download those C90s.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

Dude -- I have only just seen this, am grabbing those C90s as we speak. Truly you are a prince amongst synthpop obsessives. Also are you going to Falkirk -- aren't the Human League headlining Big In Falkirk or whatever it's called on Sunday?

I voted for Sound of the Crowd, FWIW. Perhaps I will use my other login to vote for Being Boiled!

byebyepride, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

Yes! Being boiled it is.

alext, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

Where can I vote for the sugababes / richard X version?

byebyepride, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

I am thinking of the right single aren't I? I'll look a right tw&t if not...

not for the first time, mind.

byebyepride, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

I have only just seen this

yeh, it's that fucking nazi keith forcing everything to fall off the bottom of the new answers page at gunpoint. or something.

Also are you going to Falkirk -- aren't the Human League headlining Big In Falkirk or whatever it's called on Sunday?

nah. i'll be away, anyway. thing is, though, they're playing the same bill as heaven 17, which means THERE COULD BE AN IMPROMPTU LEAGUE MKI REUNION, and if i missed that i would cry like a girl.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

Or a GRATE BIG FITE!!!

byebyepride, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

yeh, it's that fucking nazi keith forcing everything to fall off the bottom of the new answers page at gunpoint. or something.

To be fair, I was on holiday and now I'm frantically marking like a b&stard.

byebyepride, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

One for "Being Boiled" here.

And how great thou art, Travelogue

Oh hell yes. I have listened to "Gordon's Gin" so many times it's permanently scarred into my brain. Luv <3

It's disappointing to see that "Black Hit of Space" and "Things That Dreams Are Made Of" were never released as singles, though.

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

I might go with "The Things That Dreams Are Made Of" if it'd been a single. Instead: "Fascination." So brilliant.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

I might go with "The Things That Dreams Are Made Of" if it'd been a single.

Me too. Unless "Do Or Die" had been one too ;)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

Results kind of as expected except "(Keep Feeling) Fascination" surprises.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

The total number for "Being Boiled" brings it up to second position btw.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

Fourth by my count.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:41 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm. My bad. Fourth it is.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:44 (eighteen years ago)

Heart Like a Wheel 1

HEAR THAT DRIP-DRIP-DRIP? THAT'S THE LITTLE BABY JESUS'S TEARS OF FUCKING BLOOD.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

That single was largely ignored. Probably in my all time top 10 of Human League tracks, but I voted for another overlooked late masterpiece instead.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

Nothing for Mirror Man or Human? Big ouch...

Mark G, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

"Life On Your Own" would also have deserved to have votes.

I still haven't heard this!

you're missing very, very little.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

Alright, well me & my friend have absolutely flipped our lids over this Fascination video.

The thing is yes, the girls are HOTTT. And Phil Oakey is just so delightfully photogenic, even if I can't see smashing him. The dude is hip, what can I say? He's got it down.
