glaring error #1:

The Johnny Cash song "I Walk the Line" was covered by Carter Family

um... the Carter Family broke up in 1943 (around Johnny Cash's 11th birthday). Johnny recorded the song in 1956... I believe the Carter Sisters covered the song, but then again, who covered any Carter Sisters song.

and then look how bandied about the carter family/johnny cash link is on the lengthier links...

SYNTAX ERROR. DOES NOT COMPUTE

I pondered this myself when I put it in originally. The thing that cinched it was the fact that the only album I could find it on was one that was labled "The Carter Family" (although I'm sure it contained songs by "The Carter Sisters." I think that they should qualify. I may remove that song just to be "safe," but the chain will just flow around it, like any great collection of information will.

so suspension of time precludes any logic here. YaY!

The Spinal Tap song "Sonata in C Major" was covered by W.A. Mozart.

http://gygax.pitas.com, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just for you, I removed the song. Re-generating the longest chains is now taking over an hour though, so it may be a while before I know the results.

I could spend all week on this. Oh, whoever's in charge, "Burning World" by Linda Rondstadt does not exist, my fault, sorry

What is with the jump from the Offspring to the Damned in "the longest chain?"

bnw, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

God help me, I just spent close to three hours adding songs and artists.

paul, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Could someone tell me how Husker Du performed a cover of GbV's "Gold Star for Robot Boy?" This is just one of the many inaccuracies I've come across. I propose a note be added to the front page that reads something like "if you aren't sure, don't submit."

paul, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh dear.

can someone fill in all those covers that sergio mendes did? i only filled in two i could think of off the top of my head. and i can't believe i was the one that put in the massive attack covers. this thing is a nightmare!

minna, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a great idea, and nicely executed, but the problems with the site are the interface - it asks for the covering artist first which is confusing, (hence all the back-to-front entries), covers which are retitled might going to be problematic, and 'standards' written by professional songwriters don't always have an 'original' artist, and finding the first person to record it would be tricky.

otherwise, good stuff!

michael, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is it possible to get a list of artists up as one of the initial menu option, with links to each artist's page?

michael, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What is with the jump from the Offspring to the Damned in "the longest chain?"

The Offspring covered the Damned's "Smash It Up" on the Batman Forever soundtrack. Yes it's true.

My database has over 600 more cover versions than theirs. I can't be bothered going in and adding loads, though. I note their long chains all end up the same way. If they went somewhere else from Glen Campbell they could continue, I would think: for instance, Tom Jones also covered Wichita Lineman, Loretta Lynn covered Rhinestone Cowboy, and the Four Tops, Nick Cave and Isaac Hayes all covered By The Time I Get To Phoenix. Here's my best so far, going on from part of theirs:

1 The Willie Dixon song "I Just Want to Make Love to You" was covered by Memphis Slim 2The Memphis Slim song "Every Day I Have the Blues" was covered by Chuck Berry 3 The Chuck Berry song "Carol" was covered by Beatles 4 The Beatles song "Day Tripper" was covered by Jimi Hendrix 5 The Jimi Hendrix song "Angel" was covered by Rod Stewart 6 The Rod Stewart song "Maggie May" was covered by Blur 7 The Blur song "Boys and Girls" was covered by Pet Shop Boys 8 The Pet Shop Boys song "It's a Sin" was covered by Henry Mancini 9 The Henry Mancini song "Moon River" was covered by Morrissey 10 The Morrissey song "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" was covered by David Bowie 11 The David Bowie song "Andy Warhol" was covered by Nick Cave 12 The Nick Cave song "Mercy Seat" was covered by Johnny Cash 13 The Johnny Cash song "Ring of Fire" was covered by Bob Dylan 14 The Bob Dylan song "Mr. Tambourine Man" was covered by the Byrds 15 The Byrds song "One Hundred Years From Now" was covered by Wilco 16 The Grateful Dead song "Ship of Fools" was covered by Elvis Costello 17 The Elvis Costello song "The Comedians" was covered by Roy Orbison 18 The Roy Orbison songs Down The Line and Ooby Dooby were covered by Jerry Lee Lewis 19 The Jerry Lee Lewis song Great Balls Of Fire was covered by Dolly Parton. 20 The Dolly Parton song The Seeker was covered by Merle Haggard 21 The Merle Haggard song Today I Started Loving You Again was covered by Willie Nelson 22 The Willie Nelson song Night Life was covered by Marvin Gaye 23 The Marvin Gaye song Stubborn Kind Of Fellow was covered by the Supremes 24 The Supremes song Stop In The Name Of Love was covered by the Isley Brothers 25 The Isley Brothers song It's Your Thing was covered by the Temptations 26 The Temptations song Just My Imagination was covered by Bobby Womack 27 The Bobby Womack song It's All Over Now was covered by the Rolling Stones 28 The Rolling Stones song Brown Sugar was covered by Little Richard 29 The Little Richard song Long Tall Sally was covered by Eddie Cochran 30 The Eddie Cochran Summertime Blues was covered by T. Rex 31 The T. Rex song Get It On was covered by Gary Glitter 32 The Gary Glitter song Rock 'n' Roll was covered by the Undertones 33 The Undertones song Teenage Kicks was covered by Therapy?

That's not bad, is it? I'll send it to them.

something happens in between steps 15 - 16... wilco - grateful dead...

http://gygax.pitas.com, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aargh! You're right! I copied it up to Roy Orbison from that website, when I realised that I could zoom off in a different direction from the Big O. Perhaps they have the missing link - it might explain why none of theirs got to 26, as they claim!

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris at that website says "It's being re-generated now. The gap is a supposed Gram Parsons cover of a Wilco song (we deleted it, but the chain hadn't regenerated yet)." I'm not 100% clear what he means, but I guess we'll see. That makes mine 34 steps, not 33.

It's possible to write a programme that would derive the longest chain from the database. I'm not going to try it on mine as it's in Access, and I'm not an expert therein. And it strikes me as too much of a waste of even my worthless time.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

martin,

"teenage kicks" was covered by portastatic who covered caetano veloso's "baby" which i imagine could create quite a few more chain reactions. i think i might be going in the wrong direction though.

http://gygax.pitas.com, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not surprised that it's possible to extend this - Therapy? will have some fans somewhere (no, really), who will be able to find covers of their work.

It's best when you hit a genre like country or blues or rock 'n' roll where everyone is covering each other all the time. Or old, major acts - no shortage of covers of the Stones, Beatles, Kinks, say. Recent minor ones are where the problems start.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

another suggestion for the site: it should be possible for other people to add comments next to tracks, not just the person who added it. otherwise it's looking very good now. i notice that the number of entries has jumped considerably, presuambly after being ILx-ed!

michael, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: IL-xed

Heh. Well I know I added close to 400 myself.

paul, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's addictive adding them, isn't it?

michael, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris: you might want to sort out the Burt Bacharach page - although Burt recorded most of his songs, his were never the original recorded versions.

michael, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
