How many fucking choruses does Herbie play on "Orbits"?

I'm trying to count it out for this paper I'm writing and I keep coming up with different numbers: 6 1/2? 7? 5? WHAT

He starts fucking with the bar lines and playing outside the rhythm right around the third chorus, and of course Tony Williams decides to help him blur the bar lines by throwing in all these little cymbal washes that drown out the ride, so I completely lose my measure count and get all fucked up by the time Herbie's solo is over.

Any help?

That tune is crazy anyway! If you go by the chart, there are all these little odd bars.

Do you know where I might find said chart, outside of a sheet music store? I suspect it would be mad helpful in my current situ.

Nope, just in a fake book (and the good ones aren't legal anyway?). You might be able to download fake book pdf's on slsk or something though, who knows.

Is he playing unison on the head too? I can't tell.

This is from a 70's Real Book, so I'll bet the chords for Wayne Shorter stuff shouldn't be taken too literally.

How many choruses? Purple!

(I'm too tired to listen that closely -- or write coherently -- but I'd imagine the 29-bar form is being contracted and/or expanded at various junctures at will.)

That's very very helpful Mark, thanks a million.

One of my favorite thing about being an aspiring jazz musician was going into a music store, asking for a real book, and having the clerk want to make sure I wasn't a cop.
