No Popism May!

We need a "No Popism May!"

For once, ILX needs to be filled with something else than threads about

- how all groups consisting of white guys with guitars formed after 1990 suck elephant dick

- how evil Sting, U2, Coldplay, Oasis and Travis are

- how important it is for hip-hop, R&B and maybe a little bit of dance/techno to take over the world forever and demolish all other genres from the media

- how pathetic all rock critics born in the mid 60s or earlier are.

Oh, horseshit, Geir— you're a popist, just an anachronistic one. See: your love of the Beatles over the Stones, through your sopping of the Starsailor spittle...

According to the Norwegian Social Science Data Service, white is a possible answer to ethnic/people group category question. After Norwegians, Sami, Kvens and other Nordics, it is mentioned as white/European. Other categories are Asian, Black/African/Caribbean and "other".[28] Statistics Norway considers the Asian category to include Turkish people.[29]

Dom Passantino, Friday, 27 April 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

I am a popist in the traditional way, preferring the music genre that is pop over the media phenomenon that is pop.

Pop as in meaning, melodic, harmonic and not fitting into any other "rock" genre and thus pop.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 27 April 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

Btw. any empasis on race is irrelevant. This also means hating white guys with guitars because they are white guys with guitars is wrong.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 27 April 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

How can anything be wrong when it feels so right?

Er, scratch that. Poptimism is the new soul-free culture of music. Get with the plan, Hongrie.

libcrypt, Friday, 27 April 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

Soul may easily be integrated in whatever The Beatles were doing. Holland/Dozier/Holland, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson. All wonderfully song oriented in a great classic pop way.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 27 April 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

I like how "poptimism" makes it seem like everyone who likes Girls Aloud wears brightly colored jumpsuits and shakes their fingers at every negative nelly they see.

libcrypt, Friday, 27 April 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

Wonderful use of btw, there.

(Here we go)
Let's get loud, let's get loud
Turn the music up, let's do it
C'mon people
Let's get loud, let's get loud
Turn the music up to hear that sound

Let's get loud, let's get loud
Ain't nobody gotta tell ya
What you gotta do

If you wanna live your life
Live it all the way and don't you waste it
Every feelin' every beat
Can be so very sweet you gotta taste it (mm-hm)
You gotta do it, (you gotta do it) you gotta do it your way
You gotta prove it (you gotta prove it)
You gotta mean what you say
You gotta do it (do it) you gotta do it your way
You gotta prove it (prove it)
You gotta mean what you say

Life's a party, make it hot
Dance don't ever stop, whatever rhythm
Every minute, every day
Take them all the way you gotta live 'em
('cause I'm-a live my life)
You gotta do it, (you gotta do it) you gotta do it your way
You gotta prove it (you gotta prove it)
You gotta mean what you say
You gotta do it (do it) you gotta do it your way
You gotta prove it (prove it)
You gotta mean what you say

CHORUS:
Let's get loud, let's get loud
Turn the music up to hear that sound
Let's get loud, let's get loud
Ain't nobody gotta tell you
What you gotta do, no no
(Make it hot)
(AY baby)

Let’s get loud
Let’s get loud
Let’s get loud
Let’s get loud (It’s just a party, baby, c’mon)
Let’s get loud
Let’s get loud
Let’s get loud (Don’t beat up)
Aaaa hey hey hey….

BREAK

Life is meant to be big fun
You're not hurtin' anyone
Nobody loses
Let the music make you free
Be what you wanna be
Make no excuses
You gotta do it, (do what you wanna do) you gotta do it your way
To gotta prove it (say what you wanna say)
You gotta mean what you say
You gotta do it, (go where you wanna go) you gotta do it your way
You gotta prove it (just do it)
You gotta mean what you say

Let's get loud, let's get loud
Turn the music up to hear that sound
Let's get loud, let's get loud
Ain't nobody gotta tell you
What you gotta do

Let's get loud
Let's get loud
Let's get loud
Let's get loud

Let's get loud, let's get loud
Turn the music up to hear that sound
Let's get loud, let's get loud
Ain't nobody gotta tell you
What you gotta do

"I am a popist in the traditional way, preferring the music genre that is pop over the media phenomenon that is pop.

Pop as in meaning, melodic, harmonic and not fitting into any other "rock" genre and thus pop."

This is like watching Ted Haggard say that he was only there for the meth.

"I like how "poptimism" makes it seem like everyone who likes Girls Aloud wears brightly colored jumpsuits and shakes their fingers at every negative nelly they see."

God, in my science fiction future, please let this happen as a populist movement.

I eat cannibals, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a metalist!

(Somebody came up to me at San Diego Comic Con because I was wearing a Children of Bodom T-shirt and told me that he was a fellow "metalist." It was very hard for me not to laugh in his face. Whatever happened to the good old "metalhead"?)

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

He meant "mentalist."

I eat cannibals, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe he was actually a metallurgist?

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 28 April 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Guys, there's a great new Travis album coming out soon. Are you as excited as me?????

Billy, way off mark -- Geir would never pass judgment on any record before he heard it (ie Hey guys, there's a new Travis album possibly, while Hey Guys, there's a great new Travis album nevah.)

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 28 April 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

(Sting is slightly evil, though.)

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 28 April 2007 00:29 (eighteen years ago)

Geir would never pass judgment on any record before he heard it

Well, I disliked how their previous album was not quite up there with the two before it. So what excites me in the case of the new Travis album would have to be the fact they are finally working with Nigel Godrich again. Btw. Coldplay and Keane should too.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 28 April 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I disliked how their previous album was not quite up there with the two before it.

Beford you heard it?

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 28 April 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

Nope. I didn't think Godrich was as crucial as he proved to be.

^ I think we can all stand behind that.

Z S, Saturday, 28 April 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

. Holland/Dozier/Holland, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson.

Who are the modern day versions of these we can talk about in a non-popist way?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 28 April 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

the current holland dozier hollands? i can't name names, but it has to be someone taking techno or house music theory (HDH used jazz) and applying it to pop songwriting. but they have to do a really good job and put out number 1 hits for like 20 years straight. i can't think of anyone who's up to such a grueling and faceless (for pop music world, anyway) task.

maybe if markus nikolai(?) got together with some american songwriters and made a strong effort to move into the mainstream we could see something like that. he definitely has the ear for pop ubiquity but his tendency towards club music has kept him relatively obscure. i think his music is fascinating.

lfam, Saturday, 28 April 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah, it would have to be house/techno because HDH took a recent musical innovation that, while gathering a strong following, had still not achieved the epochal cultural prominence that it would. but maybe house and techno are already there in europe. i don't know.

lfam, Saturday, 28 April 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

The Drought 3.

bear, bear, bear, Saturday, 28 April 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

why would we want to talk about these people in a non-popist way? and are you talking about the xenomanias, cathy denniss etc? or not. i think i missed a step here.

like how "poptimism" makes it seem like everyone who likes Girls Aloud wears brightly colored jumpsuits and shakes their fingers at every negative nelly they see
it works cos it's true

Alan, Saturday, 28 April 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)
