"Smooth Criminal"! It's all about the impossible 80-degree lean. (although Thriller dance classic forever)

The Reverend, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

uh, most amazing special effect more like

Oh Vahid can you not dream?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Oh sorry, Vahid, I didn't realize that wasn't real. I couldn't figure that out with my own eye. No, really.

The Reverend, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

oh i see, this is this like some extreme radical anti-rockist PoV where special efx = dancing. ok.

i think actually his live concert dancing >>>>> his music videos, especially the stuff he did on the tour for "bad" and music awards shows for that era . he does more out of this world lock + pop type stuff and less random crotch gyration / crotch grab than in the videos.

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

I was kind of joking, but it appears in a dance sequence, so there.

The Reverend, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

It wasn't an extreme radical anti-rockist PoV until you forced me to turn it into one.

The Reverend, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

the one thing about that dance sequence that always impressed me was how super-tight the choreography appeared, but maybe that's just down to only having 5-10 backup dancers at a time as opposed to what, 15-20 in "thriller" and "bad"??

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't actually seen the video (or any of his "Bad"/"Dangerous era vids, really) in a long time, so I think I need to spend some time fighting Youtube before I have any real opinion on this.

The Reverend, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

when you watch the youtube vids, check out some of the live compilation / montage videos that people have made of his performances. also be sure to check out when he was on OPRAH, there's a bit where he dances for like 30 seconds for oprah and it's just incredible. i dunno, maybe i'm just unusually interested in the technique of what he does but just the pure joy of watching him dance by himself without any crazy edits or backup dancers on rollerskates does it for me much more than the videos.

ironically i think i agree with you that "smooth criminal" is probably the best, maybe because it has long uninterrupted shots of him dancing and they're really creative with integrating charleston-type stuff into his normal moves.

but seriously, check the live videos from 86-93, they're incredible.

there's the extended version of "dirty diana" (i think) from moonwalker where he goes out on the street and dances by himself in the street to no music and then he smashes up a derelict car.

that ones pretty awesome, too.

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

"Black and White," dude. Extended ending.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

oh is that the ending to "black and white"?? right, and wasn't it circa the LA riots and people got all huffy cause he smashed a car??

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

It was about nine months before it, and there was some special Simpsons tie-in or something. Gotta love synergy. I mostly remember the In Living Color parody. "I guess I really AM black!"

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

some of the live videos for "dangerous" are crazy too.

here's one of those montage things i was talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlk0Y4YjX2g

"Beat It" is at least most probably devoid of special effects.

"Black or White" when the fat asian man dances INTO TYRA BANKS FTW!!!!

Stevie D, Friday, 18 January 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

"the way you make me feel" had some pretty awesome dancing in it too -- it's the only time i can remember the narrative of one of his videos where dancing was done for pure joy and/or to impress a girl rather than some expression of defiance/anger? -- but was unfortunately marred by its "everyone hump the ground now" ending

Tracer Hand, Friday, 18 January 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

that was such a great moment for pop music.. "the way you make me feel", "hazy shade of winter" (bangles version) and "faith" by george michael were all hits at pretty much the exact same time, all had great videos and all were on constantly

Tracer Hand, Friday, 18 January 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

some of the pre-thriller videos are bettre than you might remember, michael's moves enhanced by cheesy special fx. try the jacksons "blame it on the boogie" or the emerald-green enchanted "rock w/you"

It's all crap.
