Major duh factor here - Daydream Nation

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

For me it was a choice between Wild Gift vs. Purple Rain. I've listened to Wild Gift a lot more (although that probably wouldn't be true if I had gotten a copy of Purple Rain back when I should have), and I also consider it a lot more consistent than Purple Rain, although Purple Rain's high-points are probably just slightly higher. Anyway, I voted for X. (I do like quite a few of the others.)

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

i went with DN but there's a lot of good ones to choose from for sure

get bent, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

jbrotm.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

Major duh factor here

it sounds like you're reporting for duty

negotiable, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

there are only abt five that i dont like.

g®▲Ðұ, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

my ten favorites, in chronological order:

Rolling Stones--Sticky Fingers (1971)
Steely Dan--Pretzel Logic (1974)
Patti Smith--Horses (1975)
Elvis Costello--My Aim Is True (1977)
Rolling Stones--Some Girls (1978)
X--Wild Gift (1981)
Richard & Linda Thompson--Shoot Out The Lights (1982)
White Stripes--Elephant (2003)
MIA--Arular (2005)

I'll go with Some Girls, I guess.

xhuxk, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

Oops, that was only nine! #10 = Rust Never Sleeps.

xhuxk, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

The ones I don't give a shit about, in order of rankness:

Sea Change
Elephant
SMiLE
Apocalypse '91--The Empire Strikes Black

I've never heard the Graham Parker record (does anyone listen to Graham Parker records anymore? I'm genuinely curious).

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

That Graham Parker record would probably be my 11th or 12th or so of all the albums listed up there.

xhuxk, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

And I still get it mixed up with Howlin Wind!

But yeah, either way -- pub rock rules.

xhuxk, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

only own six of these and voted for murmur. don't understand "major duh factor" of daydream nation over murmur at all.

Tim Ellison, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

ones I probably wouldn't even buy from a dollar bin:

REM--Murmur (1983)
Neil Young--Freedom (1989)
Sinead O'Connor--I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got (1990)
Public Enemy--Apocalypse '91--The Empire Strikes Black (1991)
Pavement--Slanted & Enchanted (1992)
Pavement--Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994)
Tricky--Maxinquaye (1995)
The Fugees--The Score (1996)
Radiohead--OK Computer (1997)
Lauryn Hill--The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998)
PJ Harvey--Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea (2000)
Beck--Sea Change (2002)
Brian Wilson--SMiLE (2004)
TV On The Radio--Return To Cookie Mountain (2007)

xhuxk, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

oops, left out one of the dullest ones of all:

Elvis Costello--King Of America (1986)

Tunnel Of Love, I'd probably toss a coin.

xhuxk, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

i love half of these albums way too much to chose for real so i just decided to be the one vote for tim

ghost rider, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

now i'm going to start the 'favorite jackin' pop 2nd place album' poll

ghost rider, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

Of these, I have heard...

Prince & The Revolution--Purple Rain (1984)
Public Enemy--Apocalypse '91--The Empire Strikes Black (1991)
The Fugees--The Score (1996)
Radiohead--OK Computer (1997)
Lauryn Hill--The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998)
White Stripes--Elephant (2003)
MIA--Arular (2005)
TV On The Radio--Return To Cookie Mountain (2007)

...and comparing any of the rest of those to Purple Rain is an insult to Purple Rain's raininess and purpality.

The Reverend, Sunday, 29 April 2007 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

I surprised myself by voting for Murmur, wtf me

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 29 April 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

I hadn't realized Steely Dan and Sonic Youth were that critically revered at those times. Huh. I voted Radiohead but the White Stripes, Nirvana, both Pavement, REM, and Rust Never Sleeps are all excellent. The PJ Harvey is really good, DN has some fantastic moments, and Patti Smith has some really good ones. The PE is better than some people claim it to be. The ones I haven't heard that I most want to hear are Prince, Tricky, and the Thompsons. I guess Steely Dan too, since I have a couple albums (which are great) but not that particular one.

Sundar, Sunday, 29 April 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

(Albums I know that I don't think I'll ever listen to again: Strokes, Magnetic Fields. I remember the Fugees being good but don't remember much else about it, other than that "Killing Me Softly" is on it.)

Sundar, Sunday, 29 April 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

My top 10 in order:

X--Wild Gift (1981)
Prince & The Revolution--Purple Rain (1984)
Nirvana--In Utero (1993)
Public Enemy--Apocalypse '91--The Empire Strikes Black (1991)
The Fugees--The Score (1996)
Elvis Costello--My Aim Is True (1977)
Patti Smith--Horses (1975)
MIA--Arular (2005)
Neil Young--Rust Never Sleeps (1979)
Tricky--Maxinquaye (1995)

MIA--Arular (2005)
TV On The Radio--Return To Cookie Mountain (2007)

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 29 April 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

it sounds like you're reporting for duty

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 29 April 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know why those other two albums are floating there.

own xpost

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 29 April 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, i know exactly why. But that's a funny way of saying i made a mistake.

Slanted & Enchanted
Shoot Out The Lights

Never Heard Entirely, Curious: The River, Apocalypse '91
Never Heard Entirely, Never Will: King Of America, sMiLe

da croupier, Sunday, 29 April 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think King Of America is the second-best album of 1986, but I do think King Of America is the second-best Elvis Costello album of 1986.

M.V., Sunday, 29 April 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, King of America hasn't aged that well. Half of it is as good as anything he's done, but the other half really drags it down, listening after more than 20 years.

Wow, I feel really old typing that.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 30 April 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

five months pass...

Ha! My reaction exactly. Prince still ftw.

The Reverend, Saturday, 13 October 2007 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'll give you this, Chuck, you're consistent!

Ha - weird! I didn't even know there were polls back in April.

Also, this makes me even more consistent:

Oops, that was only nine! #10 = Rust Never Sleeps.
-- xhuxk, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:29 (5 months ago) Link

That Graham Parker record would probably be my 11th or 12th or so of all the albums listed up there.
