What's with this noise?

There's probably a really obvious wikipedia article on this, but I can't find it. So, I'll ask anyway.

You know whenever you click on something, and the computer can't do the task, so it makes a little 'tink' noise? Why is that in so many songs? I hear it all the time on the radio. I used to think it was just the DJ surfing the internet or something, but now, I hear it on cds. Who started this trend? Or is it unintentional? And C/D?

See 2:46 of "Innocence" by Bjork if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Or hear, I guess.

Any modern sound is likely to end up being used on a track, no?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Sunday, 29 April 2007 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

But this often?

Also, it's always put in rather discretely (and it never really adds to the song)...it's almost like some producer wanted to have a 'can you find the tink in this song?' contest.

Umm, I just downloaded the Bjork song to see what you're talking about, and that's not the Mac no-can-do sound in there. Just sounds like the same drum, probably bitcrushed and with a little chorus.

The Mac error thing is just a sound-designed blip like anything else, and it sounds a whole lot like a tom -- given that people (a) use lots of blip noises in music, (b) are all working with the same basic techniques/effects for processing sounds, and (c) use toms in songs, you're just bound to hear stuff that sounds like that. Lots of toms in reggaeton, for instance. Though I'm sure some people have been sitting at their Macs and thought "hey, that sound would make a good tom."

Really? Huh...I thought that sound was pretty distinct...

Thanks.
