Yo Britain, is this REALLY the best you can do??

Got the new Mojo cuz it had Tyler on the cover and I was all up into Draw the Line and wanted cr8zy 'smith drug stories...unfortunately, it's only an interview...but anyway decent article on the history of disco, which i don't know much about so that was cool..

but aaaannnyway...the CD that came with it is Made in Britain 2007: The Best New British Music:

1 Noisettes - "Don't Give Up"
2 1990s - "Arcade Precinct"
3 Vincent Vincent and the Villains - "I've Alive"
4 The View - "Same Jeans"
5 Malcolm Middleton - "A Brighter Beat"
6 Bat for Lashes - "Horse and I'
7 Maps - "Elouise"
8 Field Music - "Working to Work"
9 The Rumble Strips - "Sad City"
10 The Aliens - "Honest Again"
11 The Young Knives - "Another Hollow Line"
12 De Rosa - "Steam Comes off Our House"
13 The On Offs - "Your Loss"
14 The Draytones - "Keep Loving Me"

so yeah...I don't know y'all...this shit is pretty mediocre...I'd never heard or heard of ANY of these bands, but really? This is the BEST?? Or is Mojo just smokin' meth?

I might listen to another song by the Noisettes or Young Knives, but I don't really like either of those songs as much as I want to, they both get boring...one band Draytones sound just fine for some kinda Nuggets box set ripoff...but most of this shit just plain sucks ass.

Maps or Field Music I might even check out again, but those tracks don't do a lot for me...

The View is godawful, jesus fuck wow talk about bad songwriting/playing

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

You're asking us if a MOJO cover CD is the best Britain can do??

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

lock thread

admrl, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

also haha you bought Mojo

admrl, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

I love Mojo I don't give a shit! I like all the old stupid crap they talk about...like Wilko Johnson saying how he got in and then quit Dr. Feelgood! I'm a sucker for all that shit....

I'm mostly just curious if these bands are like supposed to be a big deal or something?

I dunno, where's all the good music? All the bands I read about that I ever check out from NME pretty much suck too... What's a Yank to do?

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

Buy American!

admrl, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

I thought this was gonna be about Eurovision.

Jena, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

let us compile a 'real deal' CD of The Best New British Music...GO!

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've only heard of one of those bands. And they're shit.

I guess the NME stuff is so bad they daren't even give away CDs any more.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

I already buy American stuff, all the time. I just think you know, it would be nice to like some new British shit. You guys were really crunk from like 66-85-ish.

I like Mclusky and Giddy Motors!

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

i can't really think of any good british music right now!

lex pretend, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

but anything mojo/nme recommends is probably the worst

lex pretend, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

This is probably as good a place as any to ask if The Gallows are as good as I think they might be.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Yo Blair, is this REALLY the best you can do?

DavidM, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

altrockwise the UK needs acts like Battles and Panda Bear at least. Mahogany, Blonde Redhead* and The Bird And The Bee also. it seems implausible tho shouldn't.

*Sol Seppy close but no cigar yet

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Okay I managed to find Gallows myspace page. They're my answer.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

noodle, the punk band gallows? i'm listening to their stuff right now, it's pretty cool.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

who/what is larrikin love? I see this on myspace and last fm all the time. I'm sure it's crap I'm just curious

admrl, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

altrockwise the UK needs acts like Battles and Panda Bear at least.

no we bloody don't, they're both TERRIBLE!

according to last.fm i have listened to approx 250 songs in the past week - TWO of them were by british people! ('the boom boom bap' by scritti politti and 'funny how' by rachel stevens)

lex pretend, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

i might go see electrelene when they come thru mpls, they seem like they could be pretty cool.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

i did end up liking amy winehouse, i was suprised i liked her.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah Matt, I saw them on MTV the other day and they sounded great. They still sound great.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

there's a Gallows and also a THE Gallows right? the latter being American?

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah i do like amy winehouse

lex pretend, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

Jesu...

Isn't there a thread where we did this a few months back?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

Apparently so. But Gallows have a wiry ginger tattooed mentalist frontman and therefore they win.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

amy winehouse is shit.

That one guy that quit, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe it's a CD with bands that Mojo readers may find better than music that is otherwise finding more attention.

I haven't heard of any of the bands on the CD, and I know nothing of them (haven't gotten round to buying that most recent Mojo), but if they are musically more similar to typical Mojo music than typical 2007 music, they are probably better than typical 2007 music.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

wtf is 'typical 2007 music'?

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

I've just realised Malcolm Middleton is former Arab Strap dude. I haven't heard his solo stuff tho.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Amy Winehouse's cover of "Valerie" finally answers the question of who's worse, her or The Zutons. At least the bint from The Zutons looks like she's eaten a sandwich in the past year.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

yeah judge the MOST attractive member of The Zutons why dontcha

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

by most i mean only

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

TBF I haven't heard Amy Winehouse doing "comedy" homophobia, either.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

Zutons woman = British Ann Coulter?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

I've just realised Malcolm Middleton is former Arab Strap dude. I haven't heard his solo stuff tho.

-- Noodle Vague, Monday, April 30, 2007 4:38 PM (5 minutes ago)

haha duh cuz i was listening to that and thinking "this is kinda like arab strap, but i don't like it as much"

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

wtf is 'typical 2007 music'?

Depends. In the US it's R&B, whilst it is a bit more difficult to make out exactly what it is in Europe. But whatever it is, popular music was better before 1985.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

whilst it is a bit more difficult to make out exactly what it is in Europe.

then there is no 'typical music'

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

Well, what is certain is that there isn't a lot of powerpop, pomp pop, symphonic rock, psychedelic twee pop or new romantics in the hitlists these days. Which means music was better before.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

do you get a boner from the decemberists geir? it seems like you should.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

THERE's NOT MUCH FUCKING SKIFFLE, EITHER

Noodle Vague, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

Geir do you like the new McFly single!!

Groke, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

WRONG THREAD GROKE THERE IS A DESIGNATED THREAD FOR QUESTIONING GH

waht

That one guy that quit, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

bit generous to Noisettes there maybe. i'd probably listen to more Bat For Lashes and Maps just to see where else they go.

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

Vincent Vincent and the etc etc etc really looked like they were going to be something at one point. It kinda went downhill from then.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

bit generous to all of them i'd say steve

lex pretend, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

"She’s not suitable for festivals. She can do her own big gigs. I think maybe she is just after a bit of credibility really. It could also be a funny thing for students. You know where it's crap but they actually think it’s funny. Ironically funny. It might be that she is there because she has a massive gay following and loads of gays might go there."

Dom Passantino, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

I love the Noisettes album actually, pretty fun stuff.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

oh wait i actually saw bat for lashes live once! she's not very good, and when she asked the crowd to "howl like wolves" i had to leave the room, but i feel a vague fondness towards her out of loyalty to my 15-yr-old self who would've thought a trip-hop tori amos the pinnacle of music

lex pretend, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

I really like the Maps album a lot. It's what the latest Air album should've been, but wasn't in any way. Also a fan of Noisettes too, although people far and wide seem to hate them.

Why's everyone giving Malcolm Middleton such low marks though? He's the rock half of Arab Strap!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

I think you've answered your own question, there.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

Bat For Lashes is the niece of Jahangir Khan, so she's arguably the best shitty freak folk glam musician to be related to a squash legend.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

Bummer. I like the rock half of Arab Strap.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

i listened to the m. middleton song again and i thought i would like it better now cuz i knew he was from arab strap, but i don't : (

it's not even that "rocking" just kinda trad boring arrangments. piano and stuff. i dunno, doesn't have that chilly minimal thing that i liked abt strap.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

seriously this song by The View is unreal, it went right into that on itunes after the middleton song...mojo said noel gallagher likes them or something, fucking christ, they sound like some high school band from ohio w/accents.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

There's a really good review of The View's album here:
