help me put music on my ipod without itunes

so I put a bunch of music on my *new* ipod nano. When I click songs or artist the screen is empty. The songs are not showing up. I didnt use itunes to put the songs on. They are not all in folders so at least a couple should show up if directories is the problem. Fucking A. I hope the problem is that I dont need to use itunes.
