i mean, i wish i had an alternative. but i got nothing. and, yet, there isn't a thread that i feel like hanging out on. isn't there anything fun to talk about it? maybe it's a slow month.

I found this record for a dollar the other day. Totally incompetent, poorly produced early 90s political thrash:

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 01:39 (seventeen years ago) link

And yet, it is awesome for both the cover and all the reasons I listed above.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 01:39 (seventeen years ago) link

How are you today, scott? I saw that radio station shirt (WYYZ or something?) in my drawer yesterday and thought of you. Did you enjoy the tastykakes?

Stevie D, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 01:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll say i enjoyed them! i brought them to work with me. that is my time for all things sweet. thanks again!

That Uncle Slam album looks great.

what kind of film library does rutgers have?

high school! awesome. do you carry a gun? what's it like in high school?

scott seward, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm a screenwriter, but not like the bullshit "I'm working at a restaurant and writing scripts about lonely twentysomethings finding love in my spare time but really I'm a screenwriter" sort. No, I don't have anything made yet, but I'm a good way there. I do have a comic book adaptation with the production company at Paramount that has a lot of momentum behind it (fingers crossed) and some potential comic book projects, etc. I even made a soundtrack of totally kick ass Southern rock and metal for the comic book adaptation screenplay, and the producer and potential director liked it. So, spreading the gospel! Anyway, as much as I feel like an asshole talking about being a screenwriter, there you have it.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Here's the track listing if anyone cares (since this seems to be a thread of randomness anyway):

1. Rebel Meets Rebel - Time
2. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Up Around the Bend
3. Alice Cooper - Pretty Ballerina
4. Motorhead - Sheet You in the Back
5. Meat Puppets - Forbidden Places
6. Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' with Disaster
7. Throttlerod - Whistlin' Dixie
8. Alabama Thunder Pussy - Three Stars
9. Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Slow Ride
10. Maylene and the Sons of Disaster - Plenty Strong and Plenty Wrong
11. Point Blank - That's the Law
12. Corrosion of Conformity - Rise River Rise
13. Lords of Acid -Out Comes the Evil
14. Drivin 'N' Cryin - Rush Hour
15. Black Label Society - Battering Ram
16. Brand New Sin - the Proposition
17. Murder by Death - Sometimes the Line Walks You
18. Down - Losing All

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:03 (seventeen years ago) link

(dammit, that should be "Shoot You in the Back")

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:05 (seventeen years ago) link

It's like someone placed an annoying asshole magnet in the middle of a building and then plagued the attracted assholes with useless information and standardized tests. Don't ask how I fit into all of this.

i just got this sabbath cover album called sabbatum where they redo the songs in a medieval style and chant the lyrics in latin. don't know if that's fun to you to talk about. sure is fun to listen to

kamerad, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:09 (seventeen years ago) link

that's awesome, jeff! good luck with the script. and that's an awesome soundtrack too.

tape store, yeah, that sounds about right. it's everyone's cross to bear. it's never easy. especially if you have a brain.

(As for where I work, I work from home, which is like my own personal hell of staring at the wall and losing my mind. ILM helps with stemming the tide of oncoming insanity, but not so much with the productivity.)

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Do you like the hospital's atmosphere? It seems like it could get depressing (depending on where you worked, I guess).

Tape Store, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i wanna hear sabbatum! sounds great.

i just reviewed this album by Tony Naima, a Swedish dude, and on his new album he does really nice alt/folk/rock versions of songs by Swedish death metal legends Dismember. Some of the songs are so pretty.

scott seward, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:14 (seventeen years ago) link

"Do you like the hospital's atmosphere?"

i live on a small island, and the hospital is so small and down-home, so the vibe is really casual and community-oriented. the people who work there are pretty close. I see scary stuff sometimes, but it's not a bad place to work at all. i feel right at home there.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:20 (seventeen years ago) link

wow, i wanna hear that too! i got a weird sabbath tribute thing a year or two ago, but most of it sucked except for one track by racebannon.

scott seward, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Have you heard the Pat Boone metal cover album, Scott?

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:25 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, it was about what i expected. silly and all that. what i like about stuff like the tony naima album is that it transcends novelty. he makes those death metal songs his own.

scott seward, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I feel so sorry for that teddy bear on the cover. It legitimately makes me sad.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, if that was a dismembered guy on the cover, I wouldn't even bat an eye. But a teddy bear? That's just so sad.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I like cheese.

Oh, here's some music-related content:

I just did my Metal ordering for the store I work at and found two nifty things ---

1) A reissue of Obituary's Slowly We Rot on 180 gram vinyl. An employee and a local hip-hop dude Envelope (who loves metal wax) already reserved copies.

2) Some label reissued the first four Count Raven discs! This is the pre-St. Vitus band for Christian Linderson (he joined them after Wino left). I have one of the four discs and I remember it being quite good so this is cool for all old school doom fans.

NYCNative, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:37 (seventeen years ago) link

some of the translations are pretty obvious

1. Verres Militares - War Pigs
2. Oculu Filioli - Junior's Eyes
3. Funambulus Domesticus - A National Acrobat
4. Symptoma Mundi - Symptom Of The Universe
5. Post Murum Somnii - Behind The Wall Of Sleep
6. Post Aeternitatem - After Forever
7. Magus - The Wizard
8. Solitudo - Solitude
9. Rotae Confusionis - Wheels Of Confusion
10. Planetarum Vagatio - Planet Caravan
11. Via Gravis - A Hard Road
12. Architectus Urbis Caelestis - Spiral Architect

and it all sounds authentically medieval. not enigma or gentle giant or something. i'm thinking of getting the new rhino diosabbath comp. i haven't heard any of the dio era albums yet

kamerad, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Medieval like this?

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c9/WorldesBlysse.jpg

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I have that comp! I have a strange Sabbath comp as well, something on a tiny German label called Frequent Frenzy. I happened to see it at Venus Records, the indie store I worked at for a moment in Manhattan in 1991ish. Let me see if I can find info on it...

Yeah, here it is:

http://www.klicktrack.com/shops/freq/releases/freqcd004/images/ff_legacy.jpg

01 - Webstrarna - War Pigs (5:04) Play
02 - Mobile Whorehouse - Iron (Wo)Man (5:27) Play
03 - On Target - Supernaut (4:19) Play
04 - Zonk - Sweet Leaf (4:58) Play
05 - Union Carbide Productions - Planet Caravan (4:57) Play
06 - Sort Sol - Black Sabbath (5:32) Play
07 - Omnitron - Symptom Of The Universe (4:44) Play
08 - New Clear Family - Who Are You (3:57) Play
09 - Oven & Stove - Paranoid (3:05) Play
10 - Eld - Tomorrow's Dream (3:29) Play
11 - In The Colonnades - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (5:14) Play
12 - White Stains - N.I.B. (5:25) Play
13 - K-9 Corps - Changes (5:07) Play
14 - All Steel Coaches - Evil Woman (3:21) Play
15 - Raw Animal - Into The Void (4:59) Play
16 - Omala - FX (3:30) Play

I only knew a couple of the bands from some early Wax Trax things (ELD, White Stains and Union Carbide Productions is the "biggest" name, prolly) and it's a strange mix of electronic, garage and oddball stuff. Some of it is wretched but some cool in a kitschy way.

You can hear snippets here:

The Oven & Stove version of "Paranoid" slays me!

I have some lounge music tribute to Black Sabbath called "Sabbath in the Suburbs," but it was post-The Osbournes, so I think it was trying to cash in on that theme song.

That "Iron Man" cover by the Cardigans is also noteworthy for the fact that they beat novelty lounge covers of Black Sabbath songs by a good four or five years. Also, the Cardigans rule.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:59 (seventeen years ago) link

i am at work. kinda bored. lots of messes to clean up though. read about the coachella festival in the paper. sounded kinda boring. but it's not really my kinda thing. i'm sure it's lovely there though. read about the jazzfest in new orleans. that sounded spicier. even if lucinda williams played too. she's not that spicy. read the story on the guy who owns the coachella land. he sounds kinda shady. i don't trust real estate moguls. i guess it might be fun to hang out at something like that. as long as there are clean bathrooms. and beers are under ten dollars. and i could get a hotel room nearby.

My favorite metal novelty record:

The Slappin' Mammy's Bondage In Blackface - a New Jersey troupe (where else?) who supposedly performed in blackface (I never had the privileged of seeing them live) and played metal versions of Al Jolson songs. The disc came out way before 1995 which is what is says on Amazon... I remember hearing it (and getting it) when I was writing for NYROR which ended way before that - I am thinking 1991 or so.

Well worth the http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00000E0PJ/ref=dp_olp_1/103-9077167-2959001.97 that the cheapest one on Amazon goes for
