Nothing says "May" like "previous year in review," amirite?

A total of 315 songs received at least one vote. I'll reveal the vital poll stats at the end. To break ties, I used total number of votes and then highest ranking vote it received. A handful were still tied after that but I just let 'em be after that, I ain't PricewaterhouseCoopers! There have been plenty of good hit ballads in the past couple years, but none have felt as genuine as "Promise." There's something so amazing about the way Ciara sings here. Rather than trying to asking Polow Da Don to hide her voice, she takes a leading role on the track and coos with real sincerity.

Ok, so "Promise" is not an original track by any means, but for a smooth Ciara single, it's pretty close to perfect. The song itself is pretty simple...It's just a gorgeous beat, complete with some genius vocoder clips, and Ciara, who sounds more powerful here than she ever has.

When I first heard about this single last year, I didn't expect much. I kind of remembered Lil Wayne from a few solo tracks, but he never left much of an impression. I had heard some Robin Thicke tracks (thanks for the lead, Sprite!), and I definitely enjoyed them. I knew he could be smooth and confident, but this concept sounded like a mess; he'd be talking about guns, the streets, etc.? He'd have to be fronting--I mean, Jesus, he's the song of Alan Thicke! How could he put up a tough guy facade while sounding cool and soulful? And how could Lil Wayne impress when he could barely stand out on his solo tracks? Well, after hearing good reports, I decided to give the track a shot, and OH MY GOD. It turned out to be absolutely mindblowing.

Robin Thicke's vocals are smoother than ever. Lil Wayne drops some of the greatest lines of the year. They work together like a bullet and an AK-47. The timing is perfect. Everything-- the horns, the rhymes, the aaaaaahhhhs--climaxes at just the right moment, and by the end, the best track of the year is the only thing still alive.

There used to be a youtube video of weezy and robin doing "shooter" on Leno, and they complemented each other extremely well - timing, putting their hands up (this seemed to be a theme this year), running around the stage, the brrrrrrrrrrrrr... Sadly it no longer exists.

Ahmed Fathi is a singer and oudist from Yemen (I think it's Yemen) and I voted for him because Sundar nominated him and I figured, okay, what the heck, lets vote for Ahmed Fathi then. But the track in question is just part of this wonderful collection that resulted from an oud festival:

I love "La Tisafir" and it probably is my favourite single track of the year but I don't feel like I know enough about oud music that I'm totally comfortable commenting on it. What knocks me out is the oud-only section beginning around 1:35 which alternates rapid strumming of thick chords with melodic commentary, building in intensity. It reminds me of things I love in some South American classical guitar music as well as in some rock music. This is where I start to feel like a dope but the sonority he hits around 2:10 reminds me of early Sonic Youth and post-Branca no wave in a way, just with more going on in the rhythm and intricate melodies. And then he goes back to the memorable main vocal tune (I want to describe the delivery as 'soulful,' heaven help me, and I feel like a dope again) and gorgeous elaborate rippling melodic commentary.

I guess it's just very unrepresentative of ILM taste in general, but maybe that's not such a bad thing anyway. (Also, I have no idea, and I assume neither do you, how new this song is. It's quite possibly an older song of his. I don't know how 2006 it really is in that sense. Great music, nonetheless.)

I got their first two albums around the same time and for a week or so I was telling people that "I really like the new album, but there's one song off their first album that I like a lot called 'the knife'"

Besides just basic confusion/incompetence, I think this might be because it sounds just a little bit different from the rest of the record to me, what with the doo wop and all (though it sounds even less like the first album to be sure).

Can I mention how much I despise "Young Folks"? Yeah, the drumbeat is good, but it's a pure garden variety funk beat. Then I get to thinking that the whistle hook is the most anoying thing ever. But then come the most snively indie boy vocals in the world. Is the girl going to be better? No. She's just as bad, if not worse. I should play that "Ring The Alarm" really loud (the Tenor Saw song, no problem)? It find it rather grating at low volumes, and can't really picture it getting better louder.

I could have filled my list with other songs I liked, but those were just the ones I truly loved. I find myself obsessing over a smaller selection of things after sampling the great hordes of stuff, and it is that small selection I want to recognize for lists like this.

I also like to impose silly rules; in this case, no singles off albums if I really like more than one track, thus no T.I. or Nelly Furtado.

I'm agreeing with Lex and The Reverend here - "Young Folks" doesn't coalesce into anything I want to hear. "Amsterdam", on the other hand, totally works for me, though I can't explain why.

And BTW, I hate the TVOTR album except for those two songs, which both are awesome...In general, TVOTR is better in theory than in practice; those ("I Was a Lover" and "Wolf Like Me") are the only two songs where they really live up to my expectations...off that album, at least

I can't believe Simian Mobile Disco - "Hustler" & Kelis "bossy" didn't place!! actually, i cant believe 'move along' either but I'm less shocked.

I would've voted Beyonce's Irreplaceable as a most hated had it occurred to me.

seems to skew somewhat british to me, esp in the placements 30 and over..
