"most lyrical"

The Reverend, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Shit, this would be much easier if I paid more than cursory attention to lyrics.

The Reverend, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

(Or had heard any of the mixtape shit.) (Or his first album.)

The Reverend, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to avoid voting, but I do have to say that Urban Legend is mad underrated.

The Reverend, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

how can you listen to rap and not pay attention to lyrics? that's just weird to me...

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

the only TI i have is some Leaders of the New South vol 4 mixtape, which i like a whole bunch.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Urban Legend has a handful some of my favorite lyrical T.I. tracks (Prayin For Help, My Life) but it's a pretty scattershot album otherwise. i'm inclined to vote for Trap Muzik here although I'm not totally sure if it's the most lyrical or just the best.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

honestly, sorry to triple post, but this is something i've always wondered, reverend...where you being serious? i see people say that on ILM all the time, like so blase, oh caring about lyrics is so dreadfully declasse, wouldn't you say old chum?

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

Because I find sounds much more interesting. I do pay attention to lyrics, I just don't force myself to. If they grab me, they grab me. If they don't, they don't. To be fair, I could rap most of teenage me's favorite albums at you verbatim.

(xp, kinda)

The Reverend, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

It's not any "above it all" type of thing, my priorities w/r/t music listening have just changed a bit, that's all.

The Reverend, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

I had no idea he had so many albums wtf all I know is the King

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Some of those are "mixtapes", but he has four "official" "albums". (Delete scare quotes as necessary.)

deej, Thursday, 3 May 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

totally agree with Al about some of his best stuff being on Urban Legend - between ASAP and My Life its probably my favorite period for lyrical TIP

deej, Thursday, 3 May 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

1) this guy is garbage
2) ya rite

mrcs, Thursday, 3 May 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

yeah deej Urban Legend is my favorite by a good deal. Left off 'the leak', though there's not as much non-album stuff on there to chew on.

tremendoid, Thursday, 3 May 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

most lyrical t.i. album Rolling Urban Legend Reassessment Thread.

The Reverend, Friday, 4 May 2007 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

1 "Tha King" (Loftin/Harris/Simmons/Smith/McDaniels) 3:24
2 "Motivation" (Harris/Davis) 3:34
3 "U Don't Know Me" (Harris/Davis) 4:03
4 "ASAP" (Harris,/Holmes) 4:44
5 "Prayin For Help" (Harris/Wansel/Holmes/Biggs) 4:22

Justifies the album on its own.

The Reverend, Friday, 4 May 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

i like the joint with b.g.

and what, Friday, 4 May 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

strongohulkington, Friday, 4 May 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

i like the joint with b.g.

What They Do!! << this is what i was going to say.

Several years ago I told myself I solemnly swear
Forever be hard to kill, even harder to scare
One reason why me and other cats is hard to compare
Cuz I'm fact, that's fiction, it hardly compares

the way he says "hardly" like "hhhhortly" and comes off all patrician, it's awesome

gff, Friday, 4 May 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

TI is so fit

lex pretend, Friday, 4 May 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

trap muzik like his reasonable doubt (what is ti:jay-z ??:d'evils/dead presidents II)

Chromski A.K. Gattlington, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

whereas king was hottest ethically

Chromski A.K. Gattlington, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Chromski A.K. Gattlington, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

while t.i. vs. t.i.p. hottest conceptually

Chromski A.K. Gattlington, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

long live da game? 24s/rubber band man actlly

Chromski A.K. Gattlington, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

I'm Serious is a lot more like reasonable doubt

i dont think urban legend ever needed reassessing! It had mostly positive response

1 "Tha King" (Loftin/Harris/Simmons/Smith/McDaniels) 3:24
2 "Motivation" (Harris/Davis) 3:34
3 "U Don't Know Me" (Harris/Davis) 4:03
4 "ASAP" (Harris,/Holmes) 4:44
5 "Prayin For Help" (Harris/Wansel/Holmes/Biggs) 4:22

plus "What they do" and "My Life"

deej, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

I'm Serious is a lot more like reasonable doubt

- to extrapolate further - first album, sells underwhelmingly, has some really lyrical tracks but musically its in a style that seems dated now

deej, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

(i.e. neptunes party jams = isaac hayes & 7 mins of funk samples)

deej, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Urban Legend is kinda his worst album, though. I think part of the reason that King was welcomed with open arms and maybe a little overrated is simply that it isn't full of desperate, ill-fitting crossover attempts like UL was.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

and considering the clusterfuck of guests slated for T.I. Vs. T.I.P. (Timberlake, Nelly, Wyclef, Kanye, Akon), he might be making the same mistakes he made on Urban Legend.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

kanye didnt hurt trap muzik

and what, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

and the joint with nelly on u.l. is 1 of my favs

and what, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

im more scared about EMINEM being on it - wtf is that gonna sound like

and what, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

kanye didnt hurt trap muzik

his first album wasn't even out yet!

deej, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

barely a pop star, way more annoying now

deej, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I know T.I.'s worked w/ some of those people before. but I mean, he actually said he regretted releasing "ASAP" as a single instead of the song with Nelly, so I'm not totally confident in his instincts. it's hard to blame him, though, he did him on King and had the biggest rap album of the year but still didn't go multi-plat, so he's probably really gunning for crossover numbers now.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

O NOES ITS GONNA SUCK BOO T.I. I HATE YOU NOW *desperately searches for new train to ride*

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

LONG LIVE BROTHER ALI, NO SELL OUTS

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

he needs to get t.i. vs t.i.p. exec produced by freddie foxxx and lil fame from mop

and what, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

q: what do exec producers actually do? i thought that they just put up the money, kind of a vanity credit for whoever the exec was

gff, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

executive producer will.i.am more like it VIVA OZOMATLI

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

damn Matt don't get all Veronica Mars thread-style defensive on me, obviously I'm gonna buy the album and give Tip the benefit of the doubt. I'm just sayin', Wyclef!

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

maybe shakira will join them!

deej, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

(and yeah like Al of course i'm gonna check this)

deej, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

verses from face, bun, tela, big gee, young buck, b.g., khujo goodie, all the usual grand hustle cats on a posse cut

beats from toomp, klc, daz, mike dean, pimp c, paul & juicy, sanchez, n.o. joe, alchemist, just blaze, maybe a nu-swizzy banger

and what, Friday, 4 May 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

ok that sounds awesome

deej, Friday, 4 May 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

dammit al don't start bringing my ILE TV threads into this or it will be on like nipples on a mannequin

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 4 May 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

the paul & juicy track samples some sad reggae shit

the joint with buck is a coke shipment storytelling joint

and what, Friday, 4 May 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

breaking new ground with that last one for sure

I am embarrassed for myself

The Reverend, Saturday, 31 May 2008 06:56 (seventeen years ago)

I have heard I'm Serious since this thread tho. I like it, but his slightly less mature voice kinda throws me off a bit. I had the same problem when I first heard the first Outkast album after getting into them through later albums.

The Reverend, Saturday, 31 May 2008 07:00 (seventeen years ago)

ah before my time :/

i would have voted trap muzik tho. also don't agree with shipley re: teh guests on urban legend. i think it all works out pretty well.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 31 May 2008 08:22 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

cool thread -- don't remember reading it or posting to it -- i actually now think that 'i'm serious' is most lyrical!
