Saint Etienne fanclub boxset

First a news infused request. We are putting together a boxed set of all the fanclub releases, with new artwork and a few extra goodies, for release (at non ebay prices) later this year. Being clots, we can't track down a copy of the issue of Clenbuterol that came with 'Asleep at the Wheels of Steel' which contained pithy descriptions of each song. If somebody could photocopy or scan it for us we'd be really grateful.

félix pié, Thursday, 3 May 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

will this itself be fanclub-only? (waht is a non ebay price? is that good or bad?)

That one guy that quit, Thursday, 3 May 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

i assume it means the boxset will be available for purchase via their site. their old fanclub releases go for as much as $400 on ebay now.

félix pié, Thursday, 3 May 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

"non-ebay price" = good, in St. Etienne's world...

henry s, Thursday, 3 May 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

Great news, this has made my day. 'Built on Sand' goes for stupid prices, nice to be able to finally get a copy.

All we need now is a 'Push Barman to Open Old Wounds' style singles retrospective with b-sides/remixes/one-off etc

Billy Dods, Thursday, 3 May 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

oh boy oh boy so so excited for this!

babedad, Thursday, 3 May 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

yay! so what all will be on it? i love to paint, built on sand, asleep at the wheels of steel... what else? even the christmas and valentine's day singles?

f. hazel, Friday, 4 May 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

Really nice. :-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 May 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

I was that original person (I think) that sold "I love to paint" on ebay. I thought it might make £50, it went for £370!

I got that email about the boxset, my first reaction was to stick "Built on sand" on't ebay immediately. So, I'd be obliged if you deleted this thread.

(only joking, obv)

Mark G, Friday, 4 May 2007 08:38 (eighteen years ago)

i've been searching for those releases for awhile and not even searching on the net for DLable copies brought up anything, so this is great.

félix pié, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

Yay!

admrl, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

i got this e.mail too, and am very excited!

i like the new song too. although, the song i have enjoyed most lately is "fascination", the new song off of the 'travel edition' comp.

derrrick, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

seven months pass...

BOXETTE!

I pre-ordered mine!!

winston, Sunday, 16 December 2007 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

I did yesterday too. Their server was so slow as well, I wonder if I got in the first 250 for the free Xmas cd. Not that bad a price either, considering Nice Price was actually really expensive.

svend, Sunday, 16 December 2007 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

i got my order in at about 2 hrs past 8pm GMT. probably too late :(

derrrick, Monday, 17 December 2007 08:36 (seventeen years ago)

ah, I can't login from here. bye bye bus.

Mark G, Monday, 17 December 2007 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

Got mine today - 5 days from UK to Australia. Cheers!

Loving it so far.

SeekAltRoute, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 10:47 (seventeen years ago)

I got mine..

Did anyone get the free christmas CD, or did they sack the idea until another time?

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 10:55 (seventeen years ago)

pictures of artwork? tracklist details?

pisces, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

Details here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxette. It's good stuff. And they definitely mailed Christmas CDs with some of the orders.

Dorianlynskey, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

Jumping in the moment it went on sale, with simultaneous log-ons from Liverpool, Seattle, and Salem, OR, we were all stumped by the slowness of the site. Progress reports - "in yet?", "nope, still staring at the same screen after 15 minutes." - were grimly humorous, as we all hoped to be in the initial 250. Oddly, Salem was the first success and Liverpool was able to order two, as Seattle (me, on a T1 line!) never got past the fourth or fifth screen.

Liverpool's sending my copy on, but has verified that both his copies had the extra cd. Salem notes that the bonus cd is on the outside of Boxette, so don't throw away the package without rooting around.

scampering alpaca, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

Got my copy, no signature or Xmas cd though :(

Well pissed off with St Et the night the shop went live, took me nearly two hours to get through all the pages. Quite why they couldn't have announced giving away the Xmas cd after it went live and limited it to one per person, may have led to a smoother, faster transaction. I see there's a copy on ebay selling for over £50 already, I thought one of the reasons to do the boxette was to put the kibosh on the ebay profiteers.

Apparently there'll be a Christmas cd later in the year and all of the old albums will be released as deluxe editions with bonus tracks, remixes etc

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

I asked their website about the christmas thing. Will post the response when I get it.

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

got two copies, only one xmas cd sadly - but hey, beggars etc.

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

i got my box (as did my gf) and neither of us got a christmas cd, but we already had one apiece because she went to the gig last year where they were giving them away!

omar little, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

so is this still available to buy?

f. hazel, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

the content is lovely, if not the physical "box"

(apparently still available)

djh, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

it's not in the merch section of their site.

f. hazel, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

trying following the links from:

http://www.loversuniteshop.com

djh, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

ah, that's got it. thanks! i somehow didn't get the email they sent out in december about preordering it.

f. hazel, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

just ordered mine- thanks!

stephen, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 02:11 (seventeen years ago)

It was a pain in the arse to get registered - all sorts of difficulties with passwords that I'm sure were not of my making - but I have placed an order now anyway. Thanks for the tip-off.

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

Just out of interest, why would anyone buy this on ebay when it's still available through the regular channels at a sensible price?

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 09:21 (seventeen years ago)

Couldn't they have had some sort of screening system to filter out the ebay parasites? Or perhaps they should name and shame and expel them from the fanclub.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

I'm only a casual fan but I'm tempted to get this. Should I? or is this stuff for hardcore fans only?

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 09:40 (seventeen years ago)

Well, if you don't like it you can count on being able to hock it on ebay for 2-3x what you paid for it, so there's no real financial risk.

f. hazel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

It depends. Some people are fascinated by "Works-in-progress" and "what might have been" type tracks. "I love to paint" is great in that respect, and also has a fair few of my favourite StEt tracks on it anyway.

Want to know what strangeness they tried to get Naomi Campbell to sing? 'ironic' cover versions of bad Elvis song, live, that sounds great anyway? and so on...

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 09:48 (seventeen years ago)

xpost why the screening system? As you say, it's available if you are part of the 'fan club', so whoever sells them online (and the ones I've seen seem to be selling their "second copies") are selling to people who can't be bothered signing up or don't know how.

Anyway, if StEt were that bothered, they wouldn;t allow them to buy two.

Also, put it this way: How to treat your fans: Allow them to get a rare CD, and earn some money too.

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 09:51 (seventeen years ago)

Fake '88 alone is worth the price of admission.

f. hazel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

And I'll admit the idea of buying two and selling one for $100 to cover the cost of the one I'm keeping is a tempting plan. The weak American dollar drives me to these moral depths.

SYSTEMS THINKING is required.

ONE COPY PER APPLICANT ONLY.

APPLICANT must be PAID UP MEMBER of FANCLUB - otherwise request to buy NOT VALID.

CDs/packages to be INDIVIDUALLY CODED - guilty parties selling to ebay or anywhere else can be TRACED and members EXPELLED.

Have sufficiently strong ISP BLOCKAGE PROVIDER to ensure NO ATTEMPT TO RE-ENLIST under DIFFERENT AVATAR.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 10:23 (seventeen years ago)

Also - EXPELLED fanclub members to be publicly NAMED and SHAMED on StEt website.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 10:23 (seventeen years ago)

bit like this place then! oh wait... (xpost TIMING)

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

they should just put the tracks on itunes or whatever.

even imaginary pop bands shouldn't play the false scarcity game.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

Heh, some chump is selling each disc from the set individually on ebay. I'm going to email him and ask how much for the box they came in.

f. hazel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 10:44 (seventeen years ago)

ha, each individual one will probably fetch £3 tops.

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

Dingbod, if you made people jump through a lot of hoops to buy a copy you'd just end up pissing off your fans and they'd show up for auction on ebay anyway... the law is pretty clear on the legality of reselling CDs. Not to mention the time and expense involved in setting up all the hoops.

The box set will let a lot of diehard fans get their hands on legit copies of the rare stuff in a nice package. That's awesome.

f. hazel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

(thing DB was being ironic, note all caps)

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

(THINK not thing... oh I dunno tho)

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:11 (seventeen years ago)

Nah, it's kind of interesting to think about. I remember the arguments we used to have (read: the arguments I used to start) about this sort of thing on the Indie-Pop list. Except that would have been about Caff 7"s and whether or not Bob Stanley was hoarding them to resell later at collector prices.

f. hazel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

Not all people are SAINTS.

Saint Etienne live in Highgate and buy thousands of rare records costing thousands of pounds every week and haven't had an album out in nearly three years so they can AFFORD the time and expense to set up all the hoops.

That way their music gets to FANS - NOT greasy bald greybearded fiftysomething child touching locust "record dealers."

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

I wouldn't know; I'm a saint.

f. hazel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

???

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 12:05 (seventeen years ago)

With proper holistic thinking this mess would never have happened.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

It's OK to be interested in the process.

f. hazel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

that guy selling them separately is a moron. actually i think anyone selling the box right now is an idiot, because if they're going for $100 while they're still available on the site it would stand to reason that in several years they'll get several times as much.

omar little, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

And I'll admit the idea of buying two and selling one for $100 to cover the cost of the one I'm keeping is a tempting plan. The weak American dollar drives me to these moral depths.

hey no shame - i'm doing just that. and i don't care, it's a good way to cover my costs and i'll have more $$ for other stuff. did the same thing with the Radiohead discbox. bite me.

stephen, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

It's so untwee though.

f. hazel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

and whether or not Bob Stanley was hoarding them to resell later at collector prices.

wasn't it determined that he actually was?

electricsound, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

got it yesterday

i think it's grand that they care for their fans enough to put out semi-annual fan club cds AND put out a lovely box like this. don't know what all you are going on about them hoarding or cultivating a collector's market or something..

i ordered mine a few days after i got the email or something and had no website problems

no xmas cd but don't they say in the liner notes that they're saving it for the end of this year??? or did i just imagine that? either way, most of their xmas songs so far aren't very good.

i'd like to write more about these discs for the occassion; maybe on a blog or something..

winston, Thursday, 7 February 2008 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

"i love to paint".. they could have stuck out that shitty "everything i touch turns to gold" and it would be a pretty nice follow up to so tough

i'm very curious about the so-called "wilderness years" between tiger bay and good humor they allude to throughout the notes...

winston, Thursday, 7 February 2008 02:28 (seventeen years ago)

I've heard three of these cds.

Patchy, to say the least.

everything, Thursday, 7 February 2008 08:12 (seventeen years ago)

"Patchy to say the least" is a remix

Mark G, Thursday, 7 February 2008 09:36 (seventeen years ago)

I believe "Patchy To Say The Least" is being used as the theme tune for exciting imminent new CBBC series THE GRANGE.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 7 February 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

yes, could somebody fill us in on these "wilderness years"?

baaderonixx, Sunday, 17 February 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

they didn't release many records between 1994 and 1998. that's about it.

Yet another compilation :

http://www.play.com/Music/CD/4-/6108171/London-Conversations-The-Best-Of-Saint-Etienne/Product.html

Not much there if you have the Smash The System DVD and all their records...

SeekAltRoute, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

..except these two:

Burnt Out Car 2008 (re-remixed by Xenomania)
This Is Tomorrow (remixed by Richard X)

could be really, really good. We'll see. Also there's the first ever digital release of "Lover Plays The Bass"!

daavid, Thursday, 24 July 2008 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

SE has had some pretty awesome album art in the past, so to say the cover of that London Conversations thing is weak would be an understatement.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 July 2008 05:44 (seventeen years ago)

They've used that font before and it's an old photo. It almost looks fan-made... but I like it, they all look good in that photo!

daavid, Thursday, 24 July 2008 06:05 (seventeen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 July 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

the light/dark green words & color scheme are a throwback to Good Humor, i'd say.

stephen, Saturday, 26 July 2008 02:30 (seventeen years ago)

Speaking of which, why is it so hard to find a complete torrent of Fairfax High?

Nhex, Saturday, 26 July 2008 02:49 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno. i have it & would share if my cd burner was working.

stephen, Saturday, 26 July 2008 02:50 (seventeen years ago)

xp yeah that is a fantastic photo of them

winston, Saturday, 26 July 2008 04:07 (seventeen years ago)

quite disappointing how they keep recycling the exact same stuff for greatest hits albums every couple of years

mitya, Saturday, 26 July 2008 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

Sort of a serious question, I have, actually. Why is Good Humor so different from the rest of their stuff? I remember hearing it and loving it when it came out, then I went back to listen to their other material and it seems like they just considered that production a fluke.

Nhex, Saturday, 26 July 2008 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

Funny, it was just the opposite with me, I was so disappointed when I first heard it... anyway if I'm not mistaken, the "unique sound" of Good Humor is largely attributed to The Cardigans' producer Tore Johansson. I remember reading that the collaboration didn't quite work and that the band didn't get along with him.

daavid, Monday, 28 July 2008 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, never played it much.

Mark G, Monday, 28 July 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

'Good Humour' is my fave of theirs, but then I love The Cardigans, so...

SeekAltRoute, Monday, 28 July 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

i think it has a few great great songs (woodcabin, sylvia, dutch tv, split screen) but at least half the album is not so good... i LOVE the production... so crisp..

winston, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

five years pass...

Had a vague idea that I would compile my favourite tracks off "Boxette" and "Nice Price" into a single disc, um, "Best of Boxette and Nice Price" but, three discs in, not really getting very far.

Mind you, at other points in the day I've thought "I'm going to play the Lilac Time, later" and "I'm going to play Earl Brutus, tonight".
