Best Mekons album (Poll closes May 15)

Original Sin has too much otherwise unavailable stuff to count as a compilation, though it'll probably take votes away from Fear & Whiskey.

fear & whiskey is great but I gotta give it up for devils rats & piggies. "corporal chalkie"!

Edward III, Friday, 4 May 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

This is another one of those moments where I cop to being behind the ILX curve— I had Memphis, Egypt on a mixtape my dad made from some CMJ sampler when I was a kid, so I picked up The Quality of Mercy and hated it for a while. Then I came around and kinda randomly bought Fear and Whiskey, and thought it was OK but not great for a while. Now I really like both of those albums, though I'd prefer something a little closer to the production of Quality of Mercy (the choices they made with Fear and Whiskey seem odd and dated to my now ears, though they were probably pretty contemporarily understandable).

So... What next? What's their next-best album? Do I have to wait for the poll to find out?

I eat cannibals, Friday, 4 May 2007 04:32 (eighteen years ago)

Rock'n'Roll for me, with Quality close behind. Completely different albums - they never made another sub-Gang Of Four record like Quality again - but R'n'R has them in all their glory.

Mr. Odd, Friday, 4 May 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

Another impossible poll! Really curious to see how this one turns out.

I voted Rock n Roll, but I've been on a huge Retreat From Memphis / Fear and Whiskey / Original Sin kick lately - man those albums age so well! Honky Tonkin' totally rules too, as does Edge of the World. Shit. Impossible poll.

Also, I Love Mekons is one of the only tapes I have in my tape deck-only car, so I pretty much listen to it every single day whether I want to or not.

Manalishi, Friday, 4 May 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

Fear and Whiskey was the first one I ever heard (back in '86), so that's the one for me.

JN$OT, Friday, 4 May 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

The Mekons [aka Devils Rats and Piggies a Special Message from Godzilla] gets my vote.

# 2: Fear And Whiskey

Don't really care about anything after Edge of the World, though there are moments (mostly on Punk Rock).

Wish I still owned my copies of Mekons Story and the English Dancing Master EP.

xhuxk, Friday, 4 May 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

while their best is prob either fear and whiskey or rock n roll these days i listen pretty much exclusively (and often) to edge of the world, so good it hurts, and curse.

so... i think i'll go with curse. and i don't think you should've included original sin if you're not including, say, the hen's teeth comps, but it's cool.

i'd like to see someone vote for oooh!, it's really great.

ghost rider, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

OOOH is pretty solid as their #3 record, which is really impressive so late in their career. But I've gotta go for Rock 'n Roll, it's just too good.

Now, if we were doing a best album-side poll, side 2 of Fear and Whiskey in a walk.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

greatness of the early records aside, it'll seem like a crime if a pre-Sally Timms album wins

ghost rider, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

I've gone for Rock 'n' Roll, but I also think Edge of the World and So Good It Hurts are (mostly) great. My Dad bought these when I was a teenager. I would guess not many people can say that.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Friday, 4 May 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

not many people can say a lot of things, and they often do.

Edward III, Friday, 4 May 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

Original Sin for me, because it includes one of my all-time favs, "Beaten & Broken."

Jazzbo, Friday, 4 May 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

i don't believe in competition and heirarchy

artdamages, Friday, 4 May 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

(should be OR not AND, i think)

artdamages, Friday, 4 May 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

OOOH is pretty great, yes.

Rock 'n' Roll for me.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 May 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for punk rock just because it is fun and was a cool idea that could have gone horribly wrong, but didn't

artdamages, Friday, 4 May 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

New York. No hesitation, no remorse. Thanks for including it in the poll even though it's a live album.

"and my head...my head feels like a brussel sprout with an 'air dryer pointed at it..."

"i don't believe in competition and heirarchy"

A rebuttal to Nasty, Brutish & Short?

I eat cannibals, Friday, 4 May 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

This is probably as good a place as any to mention that three of their videos are over at Twin/Tone. http://www.twintone.com/video/mekons. I know these sometimes (often?) show up on youtube (like the live Replacements stuff) but in lower quality.

Includes Memphis Egypt, and I too vote for Rock 'n' Roll.

dlp9001, Friday, 4 May 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and I've always thought that Cocaine Lil was one of the funniest songs ever written.

dlp9001, Friday, 4 May 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

Perhaps I should have revived this earlier. No votes for OOOH!, huh?

clotpoll, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

i am the only curse fan n_n

ghost rider, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

no, I didn't see this poll and that's my favorite as well.

sleeve, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

actually of all of these my fave is the English Dancing Master EP.

All those other records deserved more votes! Except ME.

sleeve, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

I woulda voted for Honky Tonkin' if I saw this earlier.

Brent, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

I'd have voted for Fear and Whiskey

ghost rider, Saturday, 23 June 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

mostly theaters?? weird. and no maxwell's show ;_;

ghost rider, Saturday, 23 June 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, the show at the venue closest to me is being billed as a 'quiet evening with the mekons': http://www.ncfta.org/music_detail.php?id=242 VIVA FALL RIVAH!

they did a short acoustic set at galapagos before heading out to maxwell's during their 25th anniv. gigs in nyc, and it was quite a bit of fun, no surprise i suppose.

edb, Monday, 25 June 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

what's this like, edb?

gabbneb, Monday, 25 June 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

never been -- i grew up about 15 minutes away from fall river but rarely visited. new bedford's depressing enough, and much, much more interesting, though i try to keep my distance these days. but i'm looking forward to the festa: http://www.portuguesefeast.com/.

edb, Monday, 25 June 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

last time they came thru i think they were offering the maxwell's show as a "stripped-down" acoustic thing too, but you know the encore was still 'dan dare' so grain of salt etc

ghost rider, Monday, 25 June 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

The Narrows in Fall River is a great venue. Langford has been there several times to play (once with the Waco Brothers) and exhibit his art. I can't wait.

Jazzbo, Monday, 25 June 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

This band really, really needs a box set.

new LP Ancient & Modern out Sept. 27th, I thought Natural was pretty good so I am anticipating something even better this time.

sleeve, Saturday, 27 August 2011 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

Really no better than Natural, FYI.

Trying to get through that Deadspin writer's prose is not always easy

curmudgeon, Thursday, 23 April 2015 15:30 (ten years ago)

You are not kidding. That was rough going.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 23 April 2015 16:31 (ten years ago)

yeah, always happy to see overlong rambling about the Mekons but maybe cut out a few clauses per sentence? (Also Journey to the End of the Night deserved more notice, both there and here.)

JoeStork, Thursday, 23 April 2015 21:32 (ten years ago)

Indeed. Like for example...

That fits, given what they are and always have been—an idea that almost incidentally worked, a critic’s band that critics have never really written all that much about as an actual band rather than as an abstraction, a cult band with a cult you could fit in a reasonably small room—but it leaves the would-be listener, who’s maybe just interested in them as a recording act, in a curious position, with absolutely no point of entry into their massive discography.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 24 April 2015 00:23 (ten years ago)

That's both a long sentence and 100% wrong. Fear and Whiskey or Rock and Roll are fine entries into their massive discography, which would take any marginally curious listener all of 20 seconds to figure out.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 24 April 2015 00:26 (ten years ago)

Speaking of guides to the Mekons, anyone see the new-ish documentary "Revenge of the Mekons"? Quite good in terms of its access to the band. It follows them on tour in 2011, and also offers a coherent vision of their history. Worth a look.

geoffreyess, Friday, 24 April 2015 23:57 (ten years ago)

I did, it was lots of fun. There's a great, very long Chicago Reader article from the late 90's following them on tour, one fantastic show and one drunken wreck, and makes me want nothing more than to go on tour with them.

(oh hey Geoffrey. -OC)

JoeStork, Saturday, 25 April 2015 00:20 (ten years ago)

If I can just see them once I will be happy.

Hey, OC! Didn't realize you're on here.

I like queer. You like queer, senator? (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 November 2018 02:03 (six years ago)

"Curse" is really underrated.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 12 November 2018 03:38 (six years ago)

Curse is unshakably at the top of my list. Peak Mekons. Peakons. Just the right mix of polish and chaos, beauty and vitriol and toe-tappability.

mick signals, Monday, 12 November 2018 14:38 (six years ago)

"Wild And Blue" just slays me, Sally has me in the palm of her hand.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 00:37 (six years ago)

Curse is great and, for a time after the label (Blast First?) went under, one of their hardest albums to find in the US. Sort of sideways my intro to the band, since I used to read Option, and not even counting the Mekons Watch column there used to be a Blast First ad in one of the first few pages of every issue. At the time I couldn't find it, but I did get Rock N Roll.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 02:04 (six years ago)

Glad Alfred ranks OOOH! (Out of Our Heads), which is awesome.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 02:06 (six years ago)

Side 2 Fear and Whiskey is the best of the Mekons but overall it’s Rock nRoll.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 04:34 (six years ago)

Controversial thought: Fear & Whiskey is just OK. It all comes together when they get Sally Timms and Steve Goulding.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 12:43 (six years ago)

Steve's on F&W, right? He's not doing any of the things that really sound like him.
