What's The Best album of 1982? (Closes 9. May)

Based on all albums mentioned in Acclaimed Music. Some favourites may still be absent, like my favourite "Tug Of War", but there ought to be quite something to choose from anyway.

Voted for "Rio" btw. :)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 4 May 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

Venom edge out Wall Of Voodoo and Penguin Café Orchestra.

Matt #2, Friday, 4 May 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

voted for Pornography...clearly not the *best* but a sentimental favorite, easily

as for the best? well, I probably would have chosen Vs., Hex Enduction Hour, English Settlement, or Ambient 4

stephen, Friday, 4 May 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

1982>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>1981

M.V., Friday, 4 May 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

I may agree. But both were really strong years for music.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 4 May 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

oh shit...1999 or Junkyard!

admrl, Friday, 4 May 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

hex enduction hour outpaces competition for me, but i still felt compelled to vote for ...if i die, i die for reasons that aren't totally sentimental. miami and milo goes to college are also up there for me.

earth mystery, Friday, 4 May 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Tough call between Blue Mask and Shoot Out The Lights. But for Wall Of Death, R&LT get the nod.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

Uhhh..no ASIA?

Capitaine Jay Vee, Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, 1999.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

no it's hard, no credibility.

Lawrence the Looter, Saturday, 5 May 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like the choices.

Bimble, Saturday, 5 May 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

By that I mean, the only thing in there that screams to me to vote for is something which has already had its day on another poll. This is no fun.

Bimble, Saturday, 5 May 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

Brian Eno: Ambient 4: On Land
Roxy Music: Avalon

i never realized that my two favourite albums ever were made in the same year

, Saturday, 5 May 2007 06:57 (eighteen years ago)

On Land was pretty good, though, I admit that. I'd rather here Laraaji right now, but okay, you have a point.

Bimble, Saturday, 5 May 2007 06:59 (eighteen years ago)

WHOOOOOOOOOOAAAAARRRRGHHHH
BLACK METAL.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

On Land

alex in mainhattan, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:44 (eighteen years ago)

JN$OT, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:46 (eighteen years ago)

voted for the dreaming

Charlie Howard, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:51 (eighteen years ago)

I was having a tough time deciding until I noticed What Time Is It? on there. One of the few albums I couldn't live without

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 5 May 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

nicky lo-fi, Saturday, 5 May 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

so hard to choose between Gun Club to The Birthday party...

Zeno, Saturday, 5 May 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

I went with American Fool, though on a different day I might well have picked Thriller, The Message, Hex Enduction Hour, or Back From Samoa instead.

xhuxk, Saturday, 5 May 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

Hehehe. I'd forgotten Mellencamp had an album called "American Fool" *snicker* hehehe that's kinda ironic you see because that's exactly what he is. Hahaha. Does he really have a song on the album where he proclaims this or what? Hahaha.

Bimble, Saturday, 5 May 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

Richard and Linda

Jazzbo, Saturday, 5 May 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

Miami over Hex Enduction Hour in a squeaker.

Maciej, Saturday, 5 May 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

Wha??? I don't understand these choices! Some of the more "college radio" ones I remember buying and/or playing on the radio. But surely the best album of '82 was released by Black Saint or ECM. (But I'll end up voting for the Cap'n or Kate Bush, once I'm logged in.)

mark 0, Saturday, 5 May 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

Wha??? I don't understand these choices!

They have all been performing well in a number of critics' lists, either in 1982/83 or more recently. That is what the Acclaimed Music lists are based upon.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 5 May 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

Tough call between Hex Enduction and Back From Samoa, Hex wins by a hair.

sleeve, Saturday, 5 May 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

Iron Fist, with 1999, Hex and Drop The Bomb coming close. And hey, Thriller still sound pretty damn good to me.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Sunday, 6 May 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

It's between these:

Orange Juice: You Can't Hide Your Love Forever
The Associates: Sulk
The Beat: Special Beat Service
Kate Bush: The Dreaming
The Fall: Hex Enduction Hour
Dexy's Midnight Runners: Too-Rye-Ay

DavidM, Sunday, 6 May 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

9 out of 10 doctors placed more weight in Rafi Zabor's and Kevin Whitehead's opinions than in the aggregate of a roomful of furiously typing Joe Rockboys. That said, even based on these limited choices, 1982 was quite a year.

mark 0, Sunday, 6 May 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, Eno triumphs.

Billy Dods, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

Kinda surprising to me, but there is a lot of love for Eno on this board.

Jazzbo, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

Weird.

JN$OT, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

no respect for the boss man

davedestroybox, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

Revisionist claptrap.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

Rio, Pornography and English Settlement get 5 votes between them = WTF ILX

I'd have gone for Rio too, if that makes Geir feel any better. The above three are my own top 3 in order.

Just got offed, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

Surprising winner. Personally I feel like Eno as a soloist had nothing more to offer after "Before And After Science"

Geir Hongro, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

As for "English Settlement" I would never have voted for that. I have come to accept that "Senses Working Overtime" is a great single, but the album as a whole is still way too patchy and might have been better as a single album. XTC for me started with "Mummer" (even though "Black Sea" was great obviously)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 11 May 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, I'll have to re-listen to On Land. I had to remind myself that 1982 really was good, as the list is missing so much. If they're gonna list Toto, then why not:

Liliput
James Blood Ulmer * Black Rock
King Sunny Ade * Juju Music
Comsat Angels * Fiction
The Sound * All Fall Down
Fun Boy Three
The Passage * Degenerates
Crispy Ambulance * The Plateau Phase

Lora Logic * Pedigree Charm
Rip Rig + Panic * I Am Cold

Fela Kuti * Original Suffer Head
Hüsker Dü * Everything Falls Apart

Cabaret Voltaire * 2 X 45
Nina Hagen * Nunsexmonkrock
James White & the Blacks * Sax Maniac
Discharge * Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing
Dead Kennedys * Plastic Surgery Disasters
Savage Republic * Tragic Figures
Einsturzende Neubauten * Kollaps
Devo * Oh No! It's Devo
Colin Newman * Not To
Au Pairs * Sense And Sensuality
Killing Joke * Revelations
MDC * Millions of Dead Cops
Crass * Christ - The Album
Barry Brown * Far East
Orange Juice * Rip It Up
Robert Wyatt * Nothing Can Stop Us

Anvil * Metal On Metal

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 12 May 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Simply because they haven't been listed on enough critics list from 1982 and until the present day. Acclaimed Music is maths after all.

(Too bad Henrik isn't around much anymore or he could probably give a more accurate response to these questions)
