Kissing With Confidence - Will Powers

Who the hell was this. (It's the only artist I don't recognize.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 May 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

ned, i'm sure you will have heard this.
it was all over the place at the time. a spoken 'teach yourself positive attitude' guru type of stuff over a electro-disco groove. great novelty pop hit.
i used to have the album on tape .. and it was all the same !

mark e, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

*bows* Mark, not all hits in England were hits over here.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

got to be Double Dutch.
that Duck Rock album hit my playlist for years and threw me off into all manner of interesting directions (early hip hop and of course ZTT). a lot of my collection is down to Duck Rock, therefore Double Dutch it is for me.

xpost - soz - you're right.
i assumed it was a hit over there (it was very MTV friendly - and American voiceover - hence the assumption). its 1am. i should sleep ..

"*bows* Mark, not all hits in England were hits over here."

it was pretty big in the u.s.!

will powers was rock photographer lynn goldsmith. carly simon sang on it. it was a yankee creation:

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

my college radio station in connecticut LOVED that song. much to my chagrin.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

shit I had almost completely forgotten "That's All" and now I am cursed with it running around in my head all over again

Shakey Mo Collier, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

i still love it.

xpost

jed_, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

although "Adventures In Success" is better.

jed_, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for (keep feeling) fascination even though i love double dutch and temptation. and they don't know. and safety dance. and candy girl. and karma chameleon.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

that fascination EP with you remind me of gold and mirror man on it and of course the long version of fascination is one of my favorite pieces of 20th century art.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

I really don't remember it at all! But keep in mind my musical exposure at that time was strictly top 40, upstate New York, plus the very occasional video (no MTV in my house until we were back in California).

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

it was a toss up between the cure and down under for me.

the next grozart, Saturday, 5 May 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

i only found out yesterday that p collins had desecrated the supremes! i did not need to be reminded

lex pretend, Saturday, 5 May 2007 02:24 (eighteen years ago)

o and new edition all the way obv

lex pretend, Saturday, 5 May 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

For me it's Total Eclipse of the Heart v. Down Under. Although Safety Dance is a compelling candidate as well...

musically, Saturday, 5 May 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

(Keep Feeling) Fascination - The Human League <--- YES

ugh 3X Limahl & 2X Boy George, it's not like there was a dearth of pop hits to choose from back then either, did they have a multipack license policy or something?

blunt, Saturday, 5 May 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

you know who the Supremes are?!??

Shakey Mo Collier, Saturday, 5 May 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

Of course he does— They're sampled by Kanye.

I eat cannibals, Saturday, 5 May 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

Really? When?

musically, Saturday, 5 May 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

Definetely "Down Under."

JN$OT, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:03 (eighteen years ago)

I was sooo into lots of these songs back then. Have to admit some of them aren't quite as good today as they were then (and I am starting to realize that 1981 and 1982 were probably better years for the genre than 1983) but still a great generation of new bands.

Voted "Karma Chameleon" for sentimental reasons (was my all-time favourite song back then)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 5 May 2007 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

"Kissing With Confidence" wasn't a hit in Norway either. I bought "Now 1" on discount about 3 years after it was released, and "Kissing With Confidence" was the only song on the album that I wasn't familiar with (strangely enough, as I was a devoid Radio Lux listener during the most of 1983 and I got to hear most of the songs on the UK list several times)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 5 May 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

My sister's probly still got this album, I'll have to ask her. Anyway, "Fascination" is in my Top 5 Human League singles, so I voted for that.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 5 May 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

There was a problem in that it was mainly hits from EMI,Virgin and CBS that were used. Later on there was a rival franchise "The Hits" albums which used tracks from WEA etc

Billy Dods, Saturday, 5 May 2007 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

CBS wasn't involved in "Now", they were part of "Hits". Polygram would involve in "Now" later, but by 1983 it was just EMI and Virgin. Didn't prevent them from getting the odd license from other labels though, such as WEA act Phil Collins.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 5 May 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

total eclipse is such an all devouring monster

Alan, Saturday, 5 May 2007 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

I went with "Hey You (Rock Steady Crew)" because it sounds best in my head right now even though off the top of my head I can't recall whether I've actually heard it from beginning to end rather than mixed into other stuff; obviously the record above I associate it most with is "Double Dutch"; I must have a McLaren album where he mixes in the Rock Steady guys somewhere. But in most of those cases I do like the idea of early '80s artificial hip-hop that only Britishers are aware of (though I'm asssuming Rock Steady Crew were a real breakdancing crew, possibily even from New York City, right? Who knows.) Anyway, it gets my vote, even though if I actually heard it now, I might disagree with myself and opt for "Too Shy" or "Down Under" or "Karma Chameleon" or "Safety Dance" (all totally loveable) instead. (Also great, of course: "They Don't Know.")

xhuxk, Saturday, 5 May 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Nothing beats 'Safety Dance'. Nothing.

YSI Now That's What I Call Music 1!

jim, Saturday, 5 May 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, I think 'Hey You (Rock Steady Crew)' was the one I loved best at the time, and it's the one I'd most like to here right now!

byebyepride, Saturday, 5 May 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

on the poptimists poll 'total eclipse of the heart' and 'fascination' were tied winners...i have a feeling tom is rubbing his hands in glee somewhere at the prospect of being able to compare and contrast!

lex pretend, Saturday, 5 May 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Temptation.

chap, Saturday, 5 May 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

went for Ullman's which is just bulletproof pop perfection despite the retro-ness of the song making a vote for it seem a rejection of all the exciting modern pop around it at the same time.

blueski, Saturday, 5 May 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

This comp looks so much better than the U.S. Now! 1 (which features block-rockin jams from Lenny Kravitz and Fastball)

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 5 May 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

I'll put the full poptimists rankings up for comparison when the poll ends (though the methodology was very different - consensus rather than elitism)

Groke, Saturday, 5 May 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

I'd forgotten just how much I hated all this . . I'll get me coat.

Soukesian, Saturday, 5 May 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

I want to vote for almost all of these songs.

HI DERE, Saturday, 5 May 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

God, I hope nobody voted for Phil Collins.

TRACY ULLMAN BY A MILE!

hobart paving, Sunday, 6 May 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

wow i dont think i like any of these songs

600, Sunday, 6 May 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Candy Girl - New Edition

This was my favourite at the time and I'm sticking with it. Though "Too Shy" is tempting.

DavidM, Sunday, 6 May 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

It was extrememly uncharacteristic for me to love "Too Shy" at the time, and I was embarrassed to admit it. Fortunately I've got no such hangup anymore. But "Safety Dance" is the best thing on there. Folk of the '80s indeed.

Also a good word for Men At Work and The Cure, both represented by my favourite songs of theirs.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Sunday, 6 May 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't listened in years, and I wonder how horribly dated it sounds, but I thought Simple Minds' Waterfront was great at the time. Now that's a big beat.

bendy, Sunday, 6 May 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

Human League walked it, no surprise there.

braveclub, Friday, 11 May 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

wow someone even voted for 'red red wine'!

braveclub, Friday, 11 May 2007 00:52 (eighteen years ago)
