so i am listening to db's the secret art of science mix and it is one of my favorite d'n'b mixes. (i confess that all of the commercial mixes i've heard by him i consider classics.) anyway this mix has it all: a lil louis remix, steppy euphoric omni trio, a derrick may monologue, a bad ass two-step marcus intalex remix of solid state, "music", photek remixing reprazent, two jonny l tracks, "chicks" by klute which i remember reading negative ILM opinions about but whatevs cuz it might be the only track on this mix with an amen. it is sequenced perfectly.

please talk about your favorite summer drum'n'bass or other db mixes. i know there's been lots of talk about other db mixes, but i couldn't find a thread about secret art of...

i posted a loooong time ago about always getting into the d+b mood when summer rolled around ... around may i always just put away the techno and break out a huge stack of d+b and reggae ...

i like this alot - it's windswept, and all of those tracks have that half-pace staying in place and rotating thing going on, the beats just sort of tap out these 5/4 patterns but never really pick up any momentum, the whole thing is just an excuse to set lite-jazz keyboard noodle (think pharoah's "astral traveling") against huge bass bombs

disc 2, the mickey finn disc, is excellent. some played out tracks ("dj nut nut ... again?? *groan*) but also some unheralded classics (esp alex reece's "fresh jive")

i also listen much to this comp which i've said again and again, it reminds me of the jungle raves i'd hit up in 95, it was before everything went all rrrrrruffff rugged and raw (fuck you ron d core and gang) and instead it was like this slightly bizarro world version of a normal rave ... for some reason they always picked weird green + purple combos for the lights and the pants + visors were in effect but also lots of camo, and huge sheets of camo netting everywhere (draped over speakers and strung over the floor) and lots of grey alien heads and big inflatable mushrooms for lounging on. yeah, this compilation sounds like that, fuck ruff rugged and raw, we're hot muggy and druggy.

for real. sometimes i just want the dnb equivalent of the metro area vibe. so yes to alex reece. i am going to have to dig around to find that though! now i am listening to calibre's album from 2005 and it fits the bill quite nicely: double bass and vox by diane charlemagne, some house tempo tracks and some outright rollers.

tricky, Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

woah that kings of the jungle comp has some seriously rare/early lemon d and dillinja on it.

tricky, Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

i think i might dig this one out too.

^^ sub custos

xpost oh crap, i was totally about to post on that R+S comp ... esp the 2nd disc. i remember i bought that on the last day of my 2nd year of college, after finishing two finals ... walked home, popped it on in the early afternoon and started drinking red stripe and barbecueing steaks in tinfoils w/ onion and mushroom. it was totally like 90 degrees in late may and we watched the sunset and kept listening to that disc (and also the first faze action disc and a tape of the first three EPs on atlantic jaxx and the ballistic brothers album) and then we ended up running up and down shattuck around midnight throwing a frisbee back and forth across the street, came back home and listened to the album on repeat until i passed out around 4 am

Sawry. I don't disagree. I'm full of being a dick right now.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

you have an impressive musical memory! it is definitely frisbee and sunset time.

tricky, Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

another good summer dnb lp is the first high contrast album and probably pull the plug, too.

It'll grow back like a Starfleet

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

Is DJ Nut Nut really that played out? Ha.

Belisarius, Saturday, 5 May 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

OTM on Storm From the East!
"Cruising Detroit" and "Language of Love" are all-time classics to me, as they were when i was an D&B DJ...

BATTAGS, Saturday, 5 May 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

Shattuck in Berkeley?

Must dust my d&b shelves to contribute, I have a feeling it'll send me back big time. Listening to a d&b show through the studio door at the radio station today I didn't hear much difference in tuneage from sounds available in the late 90s/early 00s, when I quit checking new releases. Then the show veered into liquid funk (?!??!!?!) and even a kind of broken gabba noisefest (!!!???!?) what's up with current industrial-sounding d&b, it seems to have attained extreme levels of wtf?

blunt, Saturday, 5 May 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

I love the "Maximum Style Dubplate" on that King of the Jungle comp.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 5 May 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

blunt, that industrial stuff is just another attempt by the dutch to de-funk another genre.

Belisarius, Saturday, 5 May 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

Boestards!

how recent is that?

keep those recommendations and stories coming. i know some of you are encyclopedic on this shit.

tricky, Saturday, 5 May 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

Only a couple months old.

Belisarius, Saturday, 5 May 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

This Shy FX essential mix from a couple years ago is a good summer one too.

Belisarius, Saturday, 5 May 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

jungle is always summer music for me

deep blue - helicopter tune
dj ss - united
ma2 - hearing is believing

basically these 3, but even more so the ibiza potential bad boy kemet type prejungle stuff, esp

bad girl - bad girl

a lot of that era is of course the darkness era, postrave prejungle, and i do agree with that overall, but there was some summer vibes to some of that stuff too, and bad girl is top of the pile for me

henry s, Saturday, 5 May 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone have anything newer? Having asked that, most of what passes for "liquid" drum in bass after 2000 is horrible, bereft of depth.

paulhw, Saturday, 5 May 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

This is summer as fukk, especially "Smokin a Blunt". Sorry it's not new tho.
