Any ideas? I could just play fucker on a loop all day but, y'know, be nice to mix it up a bit.

I can't remember which album this is on or which song this is right now. (remember I've been awake for almost 24 hours for no good reason) But I'm willing to bet there isn't a damn thing that sounds like it in the world.

maybe Sinead O'Connor "She Moved Through The Fair"

sexyDancer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

or Sandy Denny?

xxpost

On Children of God yeah? Mournful oboe (?) intro, Jarboe singing "Clooooooose your eyes", nothing else sounding like it in the world :(

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 5 May 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

But Noodle, I don't have the physical, let alone mental strength to pull that album out right now, I swear. May the road rise with you, may the wind be always at your back.

Sandy Denny might have sumthink. Bits of the first Fairport album like "I Don't Know Where I Stand" have some vague vibely connection I think. I really don't like "She Moves Thru the Fair" - not Sinead in particular, I just think it's a really over-performed song, like the folk "Unchained Melody" or sump'n.

More than Jarboe I think it is the intro and the wobbly chamber backing that makes "Blackmail" for me.

I've always preferred the (very different) version on Feel Good Now, though that's the one I heard first.

dlp9001, Saturday, 5 May 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

blackmail was originally on the *A Screw* 12-inch. that's when i first heard it. first time i heard jarboe's voice, i think. no wait, greed/holy money was the first time.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

I forgot about it being released previously. Never heard the A Screw version tho. Is it different?

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 5 May 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i'm pretty sure it is. but i haven't heard it in years. i believe it is oboe-less.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

I've pulled out side 3 of Children of God, just for you, Noodle. Do you remember when M. Gira did that song on Snub - "You're Not Real, Girl"? It was so easy to look at his fingers and figure out how to play it on guitar yourself. One tiny, repeating riff into eternity...into despair. "Nothing Inside You Is Real".

Bimble, Sunday, 6 May 2007 07:31 (eighteen years ago)

I hardly ever saw Snub. I didn't watch much TV back then. I have picked out "You're Not Real" by myself before now tho. But it lacks oboe.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 May 2007 07:33 (eighteen years ago)

Okay I think Blackmail is playing now (I almost typed MackBlail). Yeah this is it. My vinyl is so crackle and pop-ridden, it's funny. Rice Crispy vinyl.

Bimble, Sunday, 6 May 2007 07:38 (eighteen years ago)

Also I decided that "Beautiful Child" was an example of a song that had no chance in hell of ever being played on the radio, but for some reason ILX wouldn't let me post that, earlier.

Bimble, Sunday, 6 May 2007 07:39 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm...so yeah...Blackmail..hmm. This is weird, I barely remember this. I mean I do...but don't. "and hold on..........................................."

Yeah. It's Jarboe. That means we get down on our knees.

Bimble, Sunday, 6 May 2007 07:40 (eighteen years ago)

The crooning, lullaby quality is part of the unique as well I think. Which is why I can't think of anything that's like it.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 May 2007 07:41 (eighteen years ago)

Okay let me get this straight, you're saying the version of Blackmail on the 12" version of "A Screw" is oboe-less.

Christ almighty, I've not even heard that at all.

I'll have you know, though that I used to be a proud owner of a T-shirt with a giant dollar sign bearing the words "Time Is Money, Bastard".
