Eisbaer, Monday, 7 May 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

Difficult, this. I may hate myself in 10 minutes. I can trace my maturation -- sexual, emotional -- to discovering every New Order album within a 10-month span. So, with heavy heart, I pick Technique because "All The Way," "Mr. Disco," "Vanishing Point," and "Dream Attack" are on it.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 7 May 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

i just KNOW low life will win but we all know the score.

pisces, Monday, 7 May 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

personally, i think that they never topped power, corruption & lies. then again, i prefer old-school synth-stuff. and nothing beats "age of consent" and "your silent face."

Eisbaer, Monday, 7 May 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

brotherhood. Voting for Substance would be cheating.

abanana, Monday, 7 May 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't think it should be on there.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 7 May 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, look at that picture! I don't know that I've ever seen that one before.

I have this feeling Technique will win.

Voting for Substance would be like cheating, yes, that's why it's so tempting, and I'm glad it's there to vote for. But I will probably sleep on it first.

HI DERE, Monday, 7 May 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

Movement 1

Spencer Chow, Monday, 7 May 2007 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

The correct answer is Technique because it works as a piece and every single song is at least a 9.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 7 May 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

personally, i think that they never topped power, corruption & lies. then again, i prefer old-school synth-stuff. and nothing beats "age of consent" and "your silent face."

i was going to say exactly this but eisbaer has saved me the typing.

stirmonster, Monday, 7 May 2007 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

Low-Life has long been my favorite album of all-time.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 7 May 2007 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

Tough choice btw Technique and PC&L.

underpants of the gods, Monday, 7 May 2007 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

Low-Life is a great album, but the correct answer is, of course, Technique.

braveclub, Monday, 7 May 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

wish I could vote for the temptation 7 inch or blue monday 12 inch :/

m coleman, Monday, 7 May 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

Technique. I'm not sure it's my favourite, but it's definitely their best. That photo is awesome.

j-rock, Monday, 7 May 2007 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

Not counting Substance, Brotherhood has always been my favorite, so that's my choice.

JN$OT, Monday, 7 May 2007 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

Never got better than on "Low-Life".

Geir Hongro, Monday, 7 May 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

CONTROVERSIAL PERRYESQUE CLAIM: Waiting For The Sirens' Call is better than Low-Life.

HI DERE, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Well, "Krafty" is as good as "Face Up."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

i'd vote for the 1981-1982 mini-lp if it were an option

zappi, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

Substance (and the Cure's Standing on the Beach) was a breakthrough for me at 15 yo--showing me how a band progresses through different stages of awesomeness.

But then Technique comes out and you just enjoy every freakin' note. Perfection. NO needed Substance to close out the past and commence with Technique.

MC, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

Most of the mixes on Substance are totally bullshit, but I guess it would qualify for this poll by virtue of being its own thing.

I gotta go with Technique, tho.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Dan OTM regarding WFTSC >>>> Low-Life (and Brotherhood for that matter)

baaderonixx, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

but the Perfect Kiss on Substance is so much better then Low Life.

dan selzer, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

dan selzer OTM

HI DERE, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

Not sure about that, Dan. "The Perfect Kiss" on Substance gives us two orgasms which I find a bit gluttonish, unearned. I will admit, though, that the Substance "Sub-culture" is better than the Low-Life one.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

CONTROVERSIAL PERRYESQUE CLAIM: Waiting For The Sirens' Call is better than Low-Life.

The drugs don't work.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

Well, "Krafty" is as good as "Face Up."

Guess what I'm going to do to you.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

will admit, though, that the Substance "Sub-culture" is better than the Low-Life one.

I couldn't disagree more!

braveclub, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

The Low-Life one is SO much more intense.

braveclub, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

HI DERE, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

dan OTM.

Eisbaer, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

The Low-Life one is SO much more intense.

I like how Barney's mumbling into the mic on the Low-Life version (of "Subculture," of course), and HATE the backing vocals on the remix.

On the other hand, the worst offense ever committed by New Order is preserving the weedy live take of Bernard singing "Perfect Kiss" for the benefit of Jonathan Demme.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

not

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

The backing vocals make the song!

HI DERE, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

I've got the Perfect Kiss Video version 12". I stick with the embossed silver one.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

The correct answer is Technique because it works as a piece and every single song is at least a 9.

yes.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 08:24 (eighteen years ago)

if i could be arsed, i'd start a new order singles poll ...

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 08:25 (eighteen years ago)

Power Corruption & Lies for me.

I kinda like New Order when they could only play their instruments with one finger and they didn't care if anyone knew. Anything post-World In Motion is pretty awful IMHO.

Confusion on Substance is just dreadful. What were they thinking. Temptation was similarly arse raped.

weareok, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, me too.

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Oh this is easy - MOVEMENT!

Dr.C, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

Bernard Sumner was so cuet once upon a time...

Err, what was the question? Come on, Substance is a best of, how can you include that? Of course I'm going to vote for it, it's like having a little bit of everything.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

My post got ated.

I was trying to say that I like the Substance version of Temptation, but I don't much like Confusion. I've never heard the original version of Confusion.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

While I've learned to love the Substance version of "Temptation," the updated "Confusion" is – with the exception of "CONFUSION!" (guitar stab) "CONFUSION!" (guitar stab) – pretty toothless. The original mix may have been murky, but there's so much going on: that electro-bass, the sequencers, Gillian yelping "Why can't you see? What you mean to me!"

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

The original "Confusion" is better, yes. both versions of "Temptation" are awesome. Substance versions of "Perfect Kiss" and "Sub-Culture" are both better than the Low-Life versions.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

Agree on Perfect Kiss, definitely. Not so sure about Subculture, I don't think I like either version that much.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

a perfect kiss versions poll please!

Alan, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

On the other hand, the worst offense ever committed by New Order is preserving the weedy live take of Bernard singing "Perfect Kiss" for the benefit of Jonathan Demme.

wtf that version of the song rules.

anyway this is too hard. PCL or movement for me. the albums are (mostly) all so different.

who will vote for republic???

akm, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

Ned.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

Are you kidding? That live video version of Perfect Kiss is possibly one of my favourite things they ever recorded!

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

ditto.

Alan, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Not to mention the look on Gillian's face, and the slight nod of satisfaction as they finish. Killed me every time.

The rubbishness of Bernard's vocals was part of what's so great about New Order - Bernard's singing is a bit shit, and his guitar playing is a bit rubbish, and their equipment was all a bit ramshackle, yet, somehow out of it all, they created these huge swaggering slabs of glacial perfection.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

Plus, well, frog samples.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

The rubbishness of Bernard's vocals was part of what's so great about New Order - Bernard's singing is a bit shit, and his guitar playing is a bit rubbish,

I accepted this 18 years ago (and I rate his guitar work a little higher), but some vocals are shittier than others. It turns out that that version is one.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Alfred OTM. This video is fine to watch once, but after that one time I never wanted to see it again thanks to the aforementioned vocals.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

You do have slightly different/higher standards for singers, though, Dan.

(and I may be at a disadvantage, distracted by cuetness.)

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Bernard was cute oh so very briefly.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

I admit that, although in fairness I don't demand constant vocal perfection (otherwise Robert Smith wouldn't be one of my all-time favorites and I wouldn't be paying attention to New Order at all, or really something like 90% of the singers whose records I actually buy as opposed to enjoying them on the radio).

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

yes, Alfred, but when he was cuet, OH MY WAS HE CUTE!!!

http://www.newwavephotos.com/NewOrder/06107NewOrder.jpg

OK, I promise, that is the only picture I will post, honest.

There are some singers whose off-ness really bugs me, but Bernard is one of those people that the more off he is, the more endearing I find it is. There's a bit in that video, IIRC, where he tries to hit a high note, fails, slides off, and then just ends up in this little yelp. Those kind of vocal tics are absolutely what I love about him.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

On the other hand, I love how smooth he sounds on Technique and the first Electronic record; it seems to add more distance between him and the material, which is, of course, the point when, in the former, you're writing semi-confessional love songs.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

My favorite Bernard vocals are on that first Electronic album, esp. "Tighten Up", "Gangster" and "Get The Message".

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

"Some Distant Memory" too. My heart melts when he sings the "It's so easy, why won't you leave this?" bit.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

OH YES.

Also his non-embarrassing rap on the last track ("Feel Every Beat"?). God that album would be perfect if it didn't have "Idiot Country" on it.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

PROTECT YOUR CRANIUM, LET IT EXPLODE
PUT YOUR FAITH IN THE MOTHER LODE

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

I actually like the singing on that later stuff less, because it is so smooth. By Republic, he's just phoning it in. I suppose it does add tension with the lyrics, this dispassionate voice - he sounds almost *bored* on that first Electronic album. Not that that's a bad thing, but it's just not the Bernard I like best.

I think serious answer (despite my vote) is actually PCL or Low-Life. Not just for the vocals, but those vocals are a big part of it. He's stopped singing like Ian Curtis, but hasn't quite turned into the jaded wannabe Eurosophisticate yet

I suppose cocaine had a lot to do with it, though, too. :-(

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't heard that Electronic album in years, though, mind you.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

I actually agree except that he's still into it on the first Electronic album.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

A yes vote for the eurosophisticato Bernard. The vocals on 'Getting away with it' is pretty much what makes the song.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

Had to go with Technique. It's perfect.

van smack, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

"Tighten Up" is a motherfucking jam.

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

The original "Confusion" is better, yes. both versions of "Temptation" are awesome. Substance versions of "Perfect Kiss" and "Sub-Culture" are both better than the Low-Life versions.

agree with all of this ... except "sub-culture". too much of that whoosh-stab noise (you know the one) on the 12".

the best version of temptation i've ever heard is, shockingly, the live one on the "retro" box with what's-his-face-that-isn't-gillian playing on it. it's incandescent. the re-done "substance" version is the first one i heard; it'd have been a couple of years before i picked up the 7" at a record fair. i was fascinated by it: this sort-of proto-version of the song i'd come to love. now i don't think i could choose between them.

but yeh, the 1987 "confusion" is wank.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

oh, and the first electronic album is a hewn-from-diamond classic; a partner piece to "technique". "getting away with it" and "forbidden city" aside, i can take or leave everything else they did, but i've played that album to death and will continue to do so as long as i have strength in my body to press play.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

Best temptation is the one that's filmed live in Brussels in mid 1981 or so - didn't even have proper words or all the parts worked out yet. The video is on that DVD comp of all the singles videos.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 11:15 (eighteen years ago)

this sounds very like the one on taras schewotsit; later released on 316 (i think). it's proto-proto-temptation: they've got the sequencer groove and a bit of the bassline and that's basically it. barney is off his tits (legend has it he took a tab just before coming on stage, and is only just coming up during the encore; i think he's maybe just had too much pernod and orange) and channelling a lot of oddness ("people ... need people ... like you"), a small amount of which made it into the final song.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, that's it.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

Movement because enough people will vote for Substance.

A singles poll would have been more interesting.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

Taras Schevenko was filmed at their first show in NYC at the Ukranian National Home on 2nd ave. Ike Yard opened up...a live Ike Yard track from that show, mixed by Peter Hook, is on the Ike Yard CD.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

Good that's two votes for Movement.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

AM I INVISIBLE OR SOMETHING

HI DERE, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

(haha Ralph Ellison to thread)

HI DERE, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

wow, look at all the love for Power, Corruption & Lies. i happen to agree w/ that opinion, but from the tenor of the posts here i would've thought that low-life and brotherhood (both fine records, incidentally) would've ranked higher.

i guess that "you caught me at a bad time / so why don't you piss off?" has a strange appeal to ILMers :-o

Eisbaer, Monday, 14 May 2007 07:47 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty good results. I don't get the lack of love for the last two albums but that's another can of worms. I'd like to hear from the one person who voted 'Republic' their favorite albumand how it can be considered better than the last two lps.

baaderonixx, Monday, 14 May 2007 08:05 (eighteen years ago)

well, republic does have Regret, which is a lot better than any of the songs on the last two LPs (Krafty excepted, possibly).

Grandpont Genie, Monday, 14 May 2007 08:44 (eighteen years ago)

If they had not made "Power etc" and Technique, I may well have voted Republic.

Mark G, Monday, 14 May 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, that is a surprise.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 14 May 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

I'd like to hear from the one person who voted 'Republic' their favorite album

wisnae me, despite my comments on the other thread ...

and how it can be considered better than the last two lps

... because it just is? :)

i'm kinda pleased the last two didn't get a single vote. i also need to compare the poll results to my own ranking of the albums on the other thread, because it looks kinda similar. interesting.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

though i'd put "brotherhood" above "low-life".

grimly fiendish, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

also: VINDICATION FOR MOVEMENT IN THE EYES OF THE PUBLIC (even though i already know a lot of people on ILM love it).
