Bridging the gap between TRL and Pitchfork, bringing together the indie
with the irreverent, Engine Room Recordings is thrilled to announce the
release of a unique compilation album, which is the result of inviting
some of today's most respected underground artists to cover their
favorite guilty pleasure songs. The result is GUILT BY ASSOCIATION, set
for an August 28th release date, and featuring the likes of Luna,
Devendra Banhart, Superchunk and Jim O'Rourke, covering songs by Oasis,
Shania Twain, Mariah Carey and the Spice Girls, among many others.

GUILT BY ASSOCIATION was the concept of Engine Room Recording's
co-founder Peter Block, who first began toying around with the idea
with various bands about five years ago. Acclaimed music supervisors
Randall Poster and Jim Dunbar, whose combined credits include
"Rushmore", "The Royal Tenenbaums", "The School of
Rock" and ABC's
"Lost", got involved soon after. Engine Room's general manager,
Wes
Verhoeve recalls "A lot of really great bands were being dropped from
the major labels at that time, and we thought it would be a cool idea
to have bands like that cover some of the acts that were actually being
supported by the majors." Verhoeve adds, "The bands that were
approached were all very enthused by the whole concept, and many of
them even had a song in mind right away. I think it's a perfect example
of a good song appealing to everyone with a love for music, even if the
original packaging of the song might not be one's cup of tea."

In conjunction with the release, Engine Room Recordings has set up a
contest to create a music video for one of three selected tracks off
the record (Petra Haden's a capella version of Journey's "Don't
Stop
Believin'"; Devendra Banhart's rendition of Oasis' "Don't
Look Back in
Anger" and Will Oldham's cover of Mariah Carey's "Can't
Take That
Away"). The public is encouraged to pick one or more songs and send in
a concept for the video. Five semi-finalists will be selected to create
full videos for their selected song(s), with one winner chosen, whose
work will be promoted with full credit as the official video. More
details and official rules are available on the album's myspace page
(see links below.)

Various events are in the works to support the album release, including
listening parties throughout the country. In addition, the folks over
at Engine Room Recordings are hard at work putting together a follow-up
compilation with new artists and songs. More info to come!

The tracklisting for GUILT BY ASSOCIATION is as follows:

1. Petra Haden: "Don't Stop Believin'" (Journey)
2. Devendra Banhart: "Don't Look Back In Anger" (Oasis)
3. Mark Mulcahy: "From This Moment On" (Shania Twain)

pretzel walrus, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

lol corny indie fuxxx etc etc

it's so depressing to me that the only songs Superchunk have recorded in the past 5 years were for this and the Aqua Teen Hunger Force soundtrack. their covers are generally good but i can't imagine any way that them doing "Say My Name" won't be horrible. and I'm surprised Watt would want to cover BOC under the auspices of them being a 'guilty pleasure.'

I loved Petra's a cappella Who covers so I'm looking forward to her track, though.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

4. Luna: "Straight Up" (Paula Abdul)
12. Geoff Farina: "Two Tickets To Paradise" (Eddie Money)

OH HELL NO

David R., Monday, 7 May 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

Don't Look Back in Anger is an amazing song - well chosen Devendra

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

here be sacrilege

blueski, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

15. Mike Watt: "Burning For You" (Blue Oyster Cult)

the only one (except maybe Oldham, too actually) who's not being ironic.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad J. O'Rourke is finally making good on his long-unfulfilled desire to record cover versions of songs not generally considered "good," but I'm sad that it's not Bruce Hornsby or Crash Test Dummies, as mentioned in past interviews.

jaymc, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

i can't imagine any of these artists covering these songs well enough to make them as likeable as the originals let alone improve on them.

blueski, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

"Don't Look Back in Anger is an amazing song - well chosen Devendra"

see, i kinda do want to hear this one! i actually like that song okay. i only know like three oasis songs though.

scott seward, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

actually i'm listening to the oldham vers. of mariah i kinda like it.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

xpost I don't know that O'Rourke is being entirely ironic, either, since when he's brought this up in the past, he's gone on about how a lot of otherwise good songs get a bad rap just because they suffer from dated-sounding production.

jaymc, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

the weird thing is that the source material is such a mixed bag that there's not the slightest bit of a recurring theme besides that the songs/artists are or have been 'popular'...Fall Out Boy, Barry White, System Of A Down, Paula Abdul etc

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

I think Oldham's long espoused a love for Mariah

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

some indie band already did a pretty good cover of say my name...like the spinanes or something?

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

there's an awesome bootleg of will covering "ignition" (not ignition remix) by r. kelly.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

One thing I don't like about this project is how it implicitly divides the covering artists and covered artists into good and bad, or at least artists it's OK to like and those it's not OK to like (or at least ones you should feel guilty about liking). I mean, I know they're a big-selling alt-metal-ish band, but I thought that System of a Down was actually pretty well respected by critics?

jaymc, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

argh

Roz, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK WITH THE GUILTY PLEASURES SHIT.

I bet every one of those originals is better than ANYTHING ever done by any of those bands!

Viva Forever is better than anything by Jim O'Rourke AND Sonic Youth combined.

I FEEL GUILTY ABOUT LIKING WILL OLDHAM. Perhaps when the Spice Girls reform they will cover Gulf Shore Blues.

byebyepride, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, the "guilty" conceit is totally stupid

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

the label's pr dept. isn't doing this any favors. BOC gets respect in the hood.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

Viva Forever is better than anything by Jim O'Rourke AND Sonic Youth combined.

no.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

I doubt there's anybody actually familiar with BOC that feels "guilty" about liking them - this is not 1982.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes i feel guilty for not liking blue oyster cult MORE than i do.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

My bff and I would sing "Just Like Jesse James" together in her bedroom. I bet you we sounded better than the Mooney Suzuki version.

Je4nne Fuhfuh, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

that band really sucked when i saw them live. this was before they got those matrix dudes to go pop or whatever, but yeah they were like 4th rate even for late 90s garage throwback dudes.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

like if you can manage to ruin a cover of "Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent, just kill yourself now.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe Stranglehold is being used for a Nissan commercial. That must go over well with the Nuge's homeboys.

The whole concept of "guilty pleasures" is stupid. If you like it, you like it, if you don't, you don't. Fuck you.

Bill Magill, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

"I doubt there's anybody actually familiar with BOC that feels "guilty" about liking them - this is not 1982"

For that matter, this isn't 1993 and being "ironic" is cool. When will it end?

matt2, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

I sure don't feel guilty about liking BOC. I fucking love BOC. I wouldn't feel guilty if I liked Journey (which I don't, but I'm sure they have plenty of fans).

Bill Magill, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

Matt2 I'm sure most of these artists would wax earnest (disingenuous or not) about how much they "really love these songs." We're in post-irony now.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

Completely agree BIG HOOS, so why call it "Guilt By Association"?

matt2, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

lazy label PR

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

I agree. Whoever came up with this concept should be ashamed. Hell, they should feel guilty.

o. nate, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard the Concretes doing Back for Good live. It's horrible, and I like both the Concretes and the original version of Back for Good, though the cover made me like the Concretes a little less and Take That a little more.

ailsa, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

Buried deep towards the end of Jim O'Rourke's remix of Kid Loco's "Love Me Sweet" (after the musique concrete/DSP section) is a pretty tender reading of Madonna's "Express Yourself".

Steve Shasta, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

Except for Jim O'Rourke singing Spice Girls this is just a crap idea. Get Take That to do any Concretes instead and see how much of a great song is left...

MC, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

Banhardt is at least as kitsch as Oasis ever was. I like his songwriting better, in general, but he's yet to produce anything as fine as "Don't Look...". That's the only Oasis song that's ever really impressed me.

it would be kinda funnier/more interesting if the situations were reversed, as suggested w/Concrete above (I would be very curious, for example, to hear Mariah covering Oldham)(

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

Liberty X covered Radiohead. It was shit.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno who that is

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

(nor do I know any Radiohead songs - hah)

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

this was a great idea...in 1991 when scrawl covered (unironically, i might add -- although i think "unironically" isn't in these artists' vocabulary) paula abdul's "cold hearted."

http://cglass.vinu.edu/mp/madtrib.jpg

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

It's pretty much a truism at this point that "there's no such thing as a guilty pleasure" -- at least on ILM it is. Which makes the concept of the comp that much more lame. OMG Will Oldham covering Mariah Carey? That's a huge leap from covering R. Kelly! And as pointed out, there's not much else tying it together, especially since the songs are from all different eras. So that just leaves the quality of the covers. So far (of the ones on the Myspace page) I like the Oldham and the Petra Hayden and the Banhart one stinks. But he stinks.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

you guys know you sound like all the rock dudes whining about Run-DMC's "Walk This Way" in '86 rite

Hans Rott, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

naturally think the whole concept of a guilty pleasure is total bullshit, who fucking doesn't besides the very young & some marketing schmoe somewhere evidently

Hans Rott, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck guilt, I just really want to hear this. Awaiting my comp breathlessly, etc, etc.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 03:33 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know if it's my love for Journey coloring this, but I kind of dig the "Don't Stop Believing" cover. Those girls have nothing on Steve Perry's pipes, though.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck guilt, I just really want to hear this. Awaiting my comp breathlessly, etc, etc.

yeah why assume irony? innocent until proven guilty and even then irony is just as much the fault of the listener as the musician? could be some good covers! still so excited about the o'rourke cover you guys.

strgn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 04:40 (eighteen years ago)

i will defend the concept of 'guilty pleasures' (see chromeo thread) but this comp makes me want to sound like the lex

yuck GUITARS!!!

deej, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'd kind of like to hear Rod Stewart covering Tom Waits.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

hans rott what exactly are you complaining about??

deeznuts, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 04:48 (eighteen years ago)

yewah i have to admit the o'rourke cover is the only one i'm excited about bcz i'm a fanboy and i think viva forever could sound cool with some crazy organ sounds.

strgn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

also sort of interesting becuz isn't Jim like *done with music*? Or was this perhaps recorded pre-DWM?

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

Well, Luna split up well over a year ago, so it's not impossible.
