I have aimed to be as inclusive as I can be -- basically, stuff featuring the main Wu-Tangers (such as the GZA/Muggs record from a year or so ago, plus Cappadonna) but not stuff like the Gravediggaz, the Killa Bees, Killah Priest, GP Wu & whatnot. Anyway, VOTE.

supreme clientele

groovemaaan, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 05:30 (eighteen years ago)

As brilliant as Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords, and Supreme Clientele are, still has to be 36 Chambers for me.

Maciej, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

same here. ODB's stuff a close second and third for me.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 07:33 (eighteen years ago)

WU-TANG ASSOCIATES?

I didn't know ODB and Billy Mckenzie worked together.

King Boy Pato, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 07:42 (eighteen years ago)

No Cilvaringz?

Siegbran, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 07:52 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe we should have another thread for non-core members and other projects, if anyone has the energy to list them all? The first Gravediggaz album is better than any official Wu record anyway.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 08:21 (eighteen years ago)

36 chambers gets my vote.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

sweet jesus, i haven't heard all of that stuff!

can i just vote for 36 chambers on the assumption that it's probably the best?

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

The first Gravediggaz album is better than any official Wu record anyway.

well, it is really good. and would probably win the putative other thread. but better than 36 chambers? MADNESS.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

36 chambers is my favorite hip-hop record... evah.

poortheatre, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

The Trials and Tribulations of Russell Jones (ODB)

anyone who votes for this is crazy!

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

but yeah Tical, Cuban Linx, Ironman, Return to the 36 Chambers, Nigga Please, and Liquid Swords are all close, but I voted for Enter the Wu-Tang

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Return.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

Baby, I like it.
-RAW

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

this is impossible - altho honestly I think I would've voted for Trife/Ghost's "Put It On the Line" if it were an option.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

35 Chambers is totally gonna walk this though... maybe I'll vote for Wu-Tang Forever just to annoy everybody

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

wouldn't annoy me, it's easily neck and neck with the debut. Anyway I voted for "Return to..", cuz ill > dope

tremendoid, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for the one I actually listen to the most

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

(its a secret!)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

no love for liquid swords?!?

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

man... i love liquid swords - out of all that mess it's definitely top 5 for me - but we gotta pick one.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

I was totally gonna start this thread the other day but I got hung up on whether or not to include Gravediggaz.

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

No love for The W?

bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

Re: Ghost Dog, are we voting for the score RZA composed or the soundtrack he executive produced?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

good question - sdtk is terrible but the score is great!

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

Wonder if I'll be the only one voting for Fishscale.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 07:00 (eighteen years ago)

The first Gravediggaz album is better than any official Wu record anyway.

well, it is really good. and would probably win the putative other thread. but better than 36 chambers? MADNESS.

Well, that's hwat I think. Obviously I like the rapping on 36 Chambers, but in other regards 6 Feet Deep is like an enhanced version of it. The beats are better, the sound is less muddy, the humour is better, and the skits are less irritating (it's one of the few rap albums where I never skip the skits). I know many people find the lo-fi sound quality on 36 Chambers a good thing, but to me it is a bit irritating; I've never understood why low production qualities should be a value in itself. 6 Feet Deep has quite similar beats to 36 Chambers, but they're crisper and sound better.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 09:48 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone who votes for something other than "Enter the Wu Tang" is a mountain climber who plays an electric guitar.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

Wonder if I'll be the only one voting for Fishscale.

-- JN$OT, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 07:00 (Yesterday)

hopefully, that album is trash

deej, Thursday, 10 May 2007 06:49 (eighteen years ago)

enter the wu-tang is the greatest album of all time, so i'll vote for that!

jabba hands, Thursday, 10 May 2007 06:53 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, I think Digital Bullet has the best set of RZA beats I've ever heard on any Wu record (for some reason Iron Flag sounds kinda weak and dated compared to that, even though they came out the same year), but I find his start-stop flow to be quite irritating in large doses, and some of the guest rappers obviously aren't as good as proper Clan members. Otherwise I might've voted for that.

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 May 2007 07:33 (eighteen years ago)

As big a Wu-fanboy as I am, this poll is boring as shit. But of course I'm voting, so I guess I'll go for Liquid Swords.

hopefully, that album is trash

There's a certain point where the line into contrarianism gets crossed. I mean, dislike it, that's fine, but something about you calling it "trash" strikes me as really off, like you are more put off by the consensus over it than the content.

The Reverend, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

Fishscale is just *dull*.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

That said, anyone who votes for it is nuts.

grandmasters >>>>>> fishscale

and what, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Grandmasters feels like less than the sum of its parts to me, the pacing is really weird.

The Reverend, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

I have not heard this Grandmasters... hmmmm

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

boring bandwagon ghostface

boring old already-used doom beats

beats that sound like pretty toney b-sides, and

shitty throwaway pete rock beats - p.r. gave a better beat to northern state!

its for people who like rap slightly more than gnarls barkley fans

deej, Thursday, 10 May 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

a compilation of the best of all the album and solo stuff before wu-tang forever would kick any rap album in history's ass, methinks.

Richard Wood Johnson, Friday, 11 May 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

I don't understand this "bandwagon ghost" concept

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 11 May 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

its for people who like rap slightly more than gnarls barkley fans

-- deej, Thursday, 10 May 2007 20:47

I definitely like rap slightly more than I like Gnarls Barkley fans.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 11 May 2007 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

boring bandwagon ghostface

Not disproving my point, there.

boring old already-used doom beats

I disagree, but cool. "9 Milli Bros", "Jellyfish" and "Underwater" are great. "Clips of Doom" is annoying. Their recycled status doesn't concern me, though.

beats that sound like pretty toney b-sides, and

Not sure what you mean by this, other than he's continuing in pretty much the same style, which is fine by me.

shitty throwaway pete rock beats - p.r. gave a better beat to northern state!

I never did get what the big deal about "Be Easy" was. I like the one with the Sly Stone beat, but that's pretty hard to fuck up. Anyways, this is the point of yours to which I'm most sympathetic.

its for people who like rap slightly more than gnarls barkley fans

Once again, not disproving my point. This is complete and utter bullshit. Do I, with a couple hundred rap cds, barely like rap? Hoosteen? The 90% hiphop-head crowd at the Ghostface concert i saw at the time of Fishscale's release? How much rap do you have to like before you really like rap? And even if you don't, what's wrong with that? Hell, even if you only like rap as much as the Gnarls fans, what's wrong with that? Is anyone obligated to like any specific type of music? Is anyone obligated to be knowledgable about a certain type of music to like any of it? And why does having less knowledgable fans cheapen the artists who have those fans? Do Guns & Roses suck because I and a host of other people who don't know jackshit about metal like them? Is my like of GnR any less valid because I don't really like metal? Seriously, this strikes entirely of "OMG the RONG people like this!" posturing.

The Reverend, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

Hard to pick between Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (Wu-Tang Clan),
Liquid Swords (GZA), Return to the 36 Chambers (ODB), Ironman (Ghostface Killah) and Supreme Clientele (Ghostface Killah). I love all those pretty equally. 2nd tier is The W, Only Built For Cuban Linx & Tical. I've just realised I've never heard Wu-Tang Forever! For shame.

Also where is A Son Unique? Not that I would vote for it, but there's some good tracks on that.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

ODB LIVES

forksclovetofu, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

forksclovetofu, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

legend of the liquid sword by GZA is hella underrated.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

rev i'm not denying its lazy & unrelated to why i don't like it
i'm not saying you dudes don't like rap, there are always 'real rap fans' who will stand up for shit that i think sucks. i'm saying that this album wouldn't have gotten any attention if it WASNT for people who don't like rap paying attention to it.

Its a huge step down from pretty toney which was popular with rap-hatting dorks too but was imo actually worth hearing

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 05:58 (eighteen years ago)

wow I had no idea Sunz of Man and Killah Priest put out that many records. wtf are their labels thinking

I think all of Killah Priest's LPs are on different labels, actually. Priesthood is a pretty damn good album if you like quasimythological Christian stuff juxtaposed with ghetto analysis. And George Clinton is on it! Black August is okay too, but it has weaker beats, and somehow Priest's flow has gotten more tired.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 10:00 (eighteen years ago)

I'm takin my molasses-ass time with it man, sorry for the slowness. All done except a couple tunes, then I'll zip it up and put it on sendspace or something.

I think it got a fair amount of praise in here when it came out. I'm not a big fan of Ghostface though (I like him on Wu group cuts, but I have troubles listening to his flow and voice for the length of a whole solo album, it gets irritating soon), so I haven't read those threads thoroughly.
