GBV and new psychedelic stuff

I was just listening to some of the early GBV singles/EP's, songs like "Scalding Creek" and "Dusted." This shit sounds like Devendra Banhart, Animal Collective, other assorted psych bands I've heard. (I'm pretty new to this stuff)

Also I just borrowed a Herman's Hermits essential collection at the library. Seemed way too cheesy the first time around!

"running wild" by fresh air, on the rubble box, is the DEAD SPIT of GbV.

electricsound, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 08:54 (eighteen years ago)

No it isn't!

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 08:55 (eighteen years ago)

yes it is

electricsound, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

FITE!

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

it's way better than anything gbv ever did. and i like gbv okay.

scott seward, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like that song much - FITE!!

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

yer crazy. running wild is fucking genius.

scott seward, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

It's Ok, not one of my faves

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

Still doesn't sound like GBV, either way

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i agree with you there. doesn't remind me of gbv. too powerful.

scott seward, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

okay, i just listened. gbv's voice is somewhat similar. i can hear that.

scott seward, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Really? OK, I'd better listen to it again myself...

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

i want to pop in and say that i have been loving me some early-mid period GBV lately. totally re-visiting middle school and early HS, but in a good way. if you want psychedelic stuff that's kind of similar to GBV, maybe check the Trevor McNamara album.

ian, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

(home recorded, short songs, british invasion influence)

ian, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

i def agree with the original point. Connecting the freak-folkers to older music -- say the Incredible String Band -- has kinda overlooked 90s lo-fi, indie folk/pop. I also think this when I see the words "collective" and "commune" pop up. They usually reference some obscuro groups like Father Yod or Harvester/Trad, Gras... But hell, the Elephant 6 thingy was tossing around the collective word for a good chunk of the '90s -- and they were even mixing pop, folk, and psych. The same goes for Sebadoh and Elliott Smith channeling some Nick Drake. In my opinion, that's how a bunch of these folks learned about Drake, and it often sounds like it.

I think for both music writers and many of the freakers, it's more romantic to namedrop some mythical, old stuff than stuff that's old enough to be dated but not old enough to be retro-hip.

If you simply strip a bunch of this freak-folk of its wooden flutes and beadwork, it's basically 90s indie folk/pop -- at least, that's what i often hear.

scott seward, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

i am in love with that caroliner photo

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

this is a good thread.
can we talk about mike rep? how about vertical slit?
alastair galbraith is great. i love his syd barrety records even more than i love syd barrett (which, admittedly is not much! i sold the solo records.)

ian, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

honestly the caroliner records i owned never did much for me.
i had like.. five of them i think. i don't remember which ones. one was the live one, and there was another about a woodpile. i think they would have made a much larger impact on me if i had seen them live.

ian, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

let's talk about how that Un LP routinely sells for about fifty bucks. or more. tower recordings/hall of fame/etc, i love.

ian, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

The Galbraith/Pip Proud collab 7 inch, "Hey Gus," fits in with all this.
A song that comforts me at the same time it frightens me.
Oh, and Amps for Christ!

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

i've always thought the caroliner live experience was far more important than the records, something that photo makes pretty clear.

as far as being an influence on this freak-folk thingy, i would say, visually speaking, the group was more of an influence on Providence and the costume-rock crowd.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

FWIW I've pretty much always been reminded of The Olivia Tremor Control by some of the Animal Collective records--I've said so on ILM before, in fact.

i saw rubber-o-cement live, and it made me sad i was not seeing caroliner. is there any caroliner footage on youtube? i can definitely see the connection to the elaborate costume/junk-noise of providence groups. especially and most obviously forcefield/lightningbolt/fortthunder. j. dwy3r moved from providence to sf. where is gygax (now that we need him here) to talk about caroliner?

ian, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

i should have bought all those thinkin fellers records when i could have gotten em for like $3 apiece.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

i don't get animal collective at all. people rate them but i listen to gastr del sol (camoufleur) and KNOW that AC are shite.

AmyCamus, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

of course, you don't get Animal Collective -- you like gastr del sol.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

Aminal Collective fans should grab the Chainsaw Paws cd-r from digitalis. It's lovely, catchy goodtimes etc stuff

and lolzz @ QuantumNoise
