Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:18 (eighteen years ago)

It's immediately offputting to list rap albums alongside dance (or at least Wu-Tang ones) since however great they may otherwise be, you can't exactly dance to them.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

the best 3 records on there are all hip hop not *dance* (whatever that is)

list is pretty poor

600, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

I own 12 of these.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

With ineffable predictability, I went for Maxinquaye, which is what cherry blossom sounds like after it's been rubbed into the side of the war memorial at Ebury Bridge on an overcast morning in a long-gone March.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

Leftism owns all.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

list is pretty poor

such a breath of fresh air after the dusty horror of the others though! a good half of the records there make me smile.

you can totally dance to the hip-hop here marcello!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

This poll finishes on the 11th btw.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

bjork is closest to my heart but she gets much token love on the canon polls. d'angelo or tricky or maybe even goldie? or MONTELL JORDAN, AWESOME

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

D'Angelo probably my favourite in terms of other ways of dancing, ahem.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

looking at that list you would definitely think 95 was a 420 year

600, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

still dunno what all this 'dance album' business is all about, but there was a dj deeon double pack from 95 id take over all these except maybe the wu tangers

600, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

Tical is incredible, but I feel a bit weird voting for it in a dance poll...

braveclub, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

How can you dance to Maxinquaye?

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

At the time: Saint Germain and Coldcut. But in terms of what has endured, I'm looking at a Leftfield/D'Angelo play-off. To be decided, then.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:32 (eighteen years ago)

'overcome' - slowly, gracefully, arm movements
'ponderosa' - jerky hip movements
'black steel' - put on yr best screwface, this one's easy
'pumpkin' - dramatic flourishes, leg glides
'hell is round the corner' - skanking around yr room i guess

xp

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

thanks for clearing that up

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

graceful?

GRACEFUL?

600, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

'overcome' - stumble
'ponderosa' - slip
'black steel' - fall to ground
'pumpkin' - remain on ground
'hell is round the corner' - cry for help

600, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:37 (eighteen years ago)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

Muzik gave good coverage to the Model 500 album that year but then went and left it off the EOY. plums.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

7. Method Man & Mary J Blige - You're All I Need

BEST. SONG. EVER.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

the most (not saying much) danceable track on 'Maxinquaye' is 'Brand New You're Retro'.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

^^ purpose maker is prolly the best on there. was that alex reece track any good, im never sure

600, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

still like all these:
Goldie - Timeless
Leftfield - Leftism
BT - Ima
Dave Angel - Tales Of The Unexpected
Tricky - Maxinquaye
Towa Tei - Future Listening
Pizzaman - Pizzamania
Nightmares On Wax - Smokers Delight
The Ballistic Brothers - London Hooligan Soul
The Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust
Omni Trio - The Deepest Cut
T.Power - Self Evident Truths Of An Intuitive Mind
Coldcut - 70 Minutes Of Madness
Bjork - Post

good but not as much as people make out:
Saint Germain - Boulevard
A Guy Called Gerald - Black Secret Technology
Massive Attack vs Mad Professor - No Protection

confession: never heard ANY of the Wu solo albums (only singles)

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

i liked alex reece at the time but can't remember that track.

repping for billie ray martin and grace, too...

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

'pulp fiction' was OK but strange how big it was for such a minimal number (ha). i did a post on it recently (direct search 'Anthems')

P-Funk Era :)

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Maxinquaye as it's my favourite record here, if not the best one to dance to.

Close competition from Goldie, Leftfield, D'Angelo, and the Chemicals.

Duane Barry, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

I went with Montell over Leftfield (though it's close.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

ODB for me, although all 3 of the Wu solo albums on that list are great.

Neil S, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for "Leftism", but none of the best albums of 1995 were dance albums, or even particularly danceable.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

how fascinating

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

I only own Tricky and Goldie from that first list, that is very remiss of me. I have never heard of Sound Patrol or Vanessa Daou as far as I can recall

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

I've gone for Coldcut, narrowly beating Tricky and Goldie.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

i liked alex reece at the time but can't remember that track.

I had the singles and I can't remember them either!

I listened to the Dave Angel album not that long ago.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

My mate adored that Coldcut album at the time.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

the Vanessa Daou LP is good for horizontal dancing...

Heights Of Abraham, now that one takes me back!

henry s, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes i think wu tang is the only 90s rap these dudes know

deej, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

could you not start so many polls around the same time, dude? we have enough trouble keeping threads on the first page as is.

félix pié, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

i cannot believe no one is repping Robert Hood. shame on you all.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

i thought about that, but i havent heard that particular lp

696, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

i really only have the hood&mills tranquilzer ep

696, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

Tricky, easy.

Matos W.K., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Well I voted for it immediately but didn't feel like discussing/defending seeing how bizarre that list is anyway.

blunt, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

Til' Shiloh is great

admrl, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

I'd probably go with Raekwon though

admrl, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

I like Maxinquaye but Tricky irritates me. And he's not a chef like Raekwon, who can cook up some marvellous shit.

admrl, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

montell jordan! wow. you know i heard this in a club the other week and everyone loved it.

i voted for tricky, even though i had that album stolen like six years ago and i haven't really heard it since. i should download it.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

(my "it" referred to the Robert Hood LP, not Tricky's)

blunt, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Tricky, please.

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

Tricky would have won had I not heard that Hood LP. God, I used to LOVE driving around blazed out of my mind listening to Maxinquaye.

the table is the table, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

Tricky seems to be the favourite here. But will the poll results bear this out?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

Who can tell in this ever-changing, never-failing-to-surprise, topsy-turvy world of ILM Poll Heaven?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

Tricky seems to be the favourite here. But will the poll results bear this out?

you're sounding like the Dragon's Den presenter now.

"Let me tell you where I am. I just don't think these polls are investable, too much work for not enough return so I'm going to have say I'm out."

blueski, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

Leftism will probably have most of the votes of us who aren't particularly into dance. So my bet it Leftism wins.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

(Being the typical "rockist" pick, I mean)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

why not make interesting and stake your life on it?

blueski, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

You think geir is wrong?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Thursday, 10 May 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

ugh, i really dislike that record.

the table is the table, Thursday, 10 May 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

Leftism is awesome.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Thursday, 10 May 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

Couple of hours voting left.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Thursday, 10 May 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

Do da da da
La da la
Play it, play it

[Montell]
I know, I'm not the man you thought I'd be
We started out so young
Your mother, and me
I know that I hurt you
I was a child trying to be a man
I walked out on my only son
I left you in your mother's hands
And now I'm standing right here
With tears, with tears streaming from my eyes
See your mother raised a fine young man
And I know I missed so much of your life

Look at me
Take a real good look at me
Don't turn away
Don't you turn away like I did my son
I'm making no more promises
I'm trying to find the word to say

Daddy's home (yeah)
Daddy's home (been gone too long)
Daddy's home (said your daddy's back home)
Daddy's home (and for every birthday that I missed my son)
Daddy's home (I'm gonna make it all up to you)
Daddy's home (everytime I made your mother cry)
Daddy's home (she laid awake at night, holding her pillow tight)
Daddy's home (oh oh)

Do you remember the day I walked out on you?
There was nothing I could say, nothing you could do
I missed your first words, I couldn't hear you talk
I missed your first steps, when you tried to walk, baby
Now I know and you know you can take care of yourself
You had to run, you had to run to somebody else
(Daddy's home)
Didn't be a good father, I wasn't there
But talk to me son, tell me how you feel

[Shappell Crawford]
Daddy why would you leave your only son
Give me somethin', I could hold on
You left me here alone
Now you've decided to come back home
And I realize
That's it's gonna take a little time for you and me to get again
I think we can do it, do you think we can do it?

If you wanna be my dad again
We've got to start all over, be friends
If you wanna be my dad again
We've got to start all over, be friends
If you wanna be my dad again
We've got to start all over, be friends
If you wanna be my dad again
We've got to start all over, be friends

[Montell]
Just look at me
Heeee, look at me

jim, Thursday, 10 May 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, Maxinquaye's the only one here that I have or have heard, and I'm not particularly crazy about it - so I guess I'll have to sit this one out.

o. nate, Thursday, 10 May 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

So Tricky edged out Leftfield. Surprised at no votes for BT.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Thursday, 10 May 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

Bump for friday morning workers to see results
