Joe, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

Between the 1st and L.A. Woman for me but I've taken L.A. Woman as that's the album I listen to if I play them.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for The Soft Parade

The title track is my favorite DOORS song. I also love playing this album all the way through.

There will never be another one like you

Aww... Mine is An American Prayer. Not sure what to go for now.

Keith, Thursday, 10 May 2007 08:15 (eighteen years ago)

Not made my mind up yet, but, in terms of numbers of hours listened to, probably "Soft Parade".

Tom D., Thursday, 10 May 2007 08:58 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes i wonder if i would like the doors. and i think the answer might actually be yes

696, Thursday, 10 May 2007 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

don't let my doors poll die!

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

I'll vote eventually, just can't amke my mind up!

Tom D., Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

But "Morrison Hotel" is actually my least favourite!

Tom D., Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

I love 3 or 4 of them, but wound up choosing L.A. Woman.

JN$OT, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

strange days has a slight leaning over the debut. too many fond memories passing out to 'i can't see your face in my mind' and 'when the music's over'

though i do really appreciate jim's whiskey induced bark on 'l.a woman'. great songs on that one too.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

Definitely the debut, but have a strange fondness for Soft Parade leftover from childhood. Actual favourite is a compilation: Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine.

sw00ds, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

Probably [i]LA Woman[i] - though sadly that is not of the two that I still own.

o. nate, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Surprised at all the love for "Soft Parade." It's my favorite Doors song, but most solid album = debut.

Dan Peterson, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

Self-titled. Sure, the songs are played on the radio to death, but they are still great songs.

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

My dad had a two disc live Doors set (In Concert) that he would listen to literally every day for a good chunk of my childhood. I hated the band for a while because of that, but when I revisited them after a nice long break, I discovered that the music had seeped into my head and that I really loved the band. I need to pick up that box set that just has all the studio albums...

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

LA Woman is my woman.

Mark Rich@rdson, Thursday, 10 May 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, where's Other Voices and Full Circle?!

The debut is the only one I really enjoy in its entiretly - the only one that still sounds as alien as it probably did when it was new. I'm usually the last person to complain about such-and-such sounding "dated" and don't even understand why that's a negative. But stuff like "When The Music's Over" and "Soft Parade" and all their attendent mute-nostril agonies feel, I dunno, clumsy in a way that "The End" certainly didn't. And I wish Jimbo could've brought more of his good-natured onstage buffoonery to the studio with him.

The other albums I find half enjoyable, or a bit less (WFTS) or a little bit more (MH). And I approve of a full 3/4 of LAW. But for me, nothing can touch the debut. (Except possibly Other Voices and Full Circle, who knows? Not me...)

Results.

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad there's finally a Doors thread that isn't about how much they suck. I'm thinking the debut has to be the one what with Light My Fire Crystal Ship and The End, my favorite song.

humansuit, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

nine years pass...

Would have voted for L.A. Woman ... These results are totally OTM, IMO, although I'd swap the last two around so that it's Waiting For The Sun > The Soft Parade.

I gave the Doors catalog the ol' college try over the past year and they really don't have an album that's great all the way through, unfortunately. I wish the Soft Parade was better than it was - as an attempt at Forever Changes tho it's pretty dire, the songs just aren't there. I feel like they never really nailed down or agreed on what they were good at, so you get these gems scattered throughout but never anything v cohesive or consistently engaging.

Οὖτις, Monday, 12 September 2016 17:30 (eight years ago)

Yeah, I totally agree that they don't really have an album that's great from start-to-finish and they've all got a degree of filler on 'em. The Doors and L.A. Woman probably have the least amount of filler, and The Soft Parade has the most... for me, at least. It's funny that you should describe The Soft Parade as their attempt at Forever Changes, because I've had that exact thought before, but at least Forever Changes still actually retains/has a bit of grit to it. The Soft Parade just sounds like a sanitised Doors.

I don't if they were attempting "Forever Changes" or not, it would seem a strange thing to do, given that "Forever Changes" was a year and half old and had been a total flop (in the US).

Bottlerockey (Tom D.), Monday, 12 September 2016 17:54 (eight years ago)

it feels similar to me, although it might not have been the precise motivation given that Morrison's love of Love/Lee is well documented but his involvement in the Soft Parade was apparently half-hearted and grudging.

Οὖτις, Monday, 12 September 2016 17:55 (eight years ago)

I dunno, they were both on Elektra weren't they? It's highly likely that they'd been exposed to the record and it's possible they got off on it as much as anyone else who heard it did.

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Monday, 12 September 2016 17:59 (eight years ago)

Arthur Lee was responsible for the Doors ending up on Elektra!

Bottlerockey (Tom D.), Monday, 12 September 2016 18:02 (eight years ago)

Yeah, that too!

It must have stung more than a bit for ol' Arthurly to watch The Doors become a bigger band than Love, but in defence of The Doors they were far more happier to tour than Love were.

As for my own preference, it goes without saying I'd rather listen to Four Sail in full than any of these Doors albums if I had to make a split-second choice.

"not to touch the earth" is all time

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 12 September 2016 23:57 (eight years ago)

I might think the Electric Flag and Stax soul might have influenced the Doors to do the tunes with the horns on The Soft Parade.
