An editor really ought to know better than to spend two-and-a-half paragraphs digressing.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

prince has had a huge influence on modern music but your list of influences is like 80% shitty

and what, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

Shit, first Common and now Caspar Llewellyn Smith? RIP big man, heaven's newsletter is gonna be so much more professional now you're up there to do it.

Influence is over rated. You shouldn't judge an artist by how many pale rip-offs they've inspired but by the quality of their work.

Strikethrough on ilx, just like God struckthrough one of the journalism greats today.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

Dom, just curious: which ones did you intentionally strikethrough?

The Reverend, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

Manics, Ronson, Avril.

billy dodds, youre right, but i dont see how that negates the obvious prince-inspired music thats come out in the last decade or so.

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

I like "Post a response" and "Formatting help" get the strikethrough treatment.

The Reverend, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

I can't help but feel Caspar is looking down on us from up there, smiling at our HTML ineptitude.

Fixed!

braveclub, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

Ethan's first post said it all.

The Reverend, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

The songs that haven't been striked-out are all so different that it kind of proves the author's point. Maybe Prince was so eclectic and wide-ranging and OF THE TIMES that his influence is more of a general thing than a specific sound?

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

ah, "very hard to trace his influence," the Guard-een say. so he wants a Rock Fambly Tree kind of thing. Prince is ten times better than even Joni Mitchell, who was good. So in like 1968 I should've said like Duke Ellington, man, where is his influence in like the Vanilla Fudge.

whisperineddhurt, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

The dude couldn't be more wrong. He doesn't think Prince has had much influence because he doesn't know many songs/artists that blatantly rip off Prince--the reason of course is that ripping off Prince is really, really hard to do. Prince's influence is completely under the surface but his production methods are all over pop music and have been for years.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Funnily enough, last night's "dreamsong" was "It hurts to be in love when girls cry"

Would that be good enough for him?
