blueski, Saturday, 12 May 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

is it called cheeky dance now? i think of this stuff as student dance. it's awful.

lex pretend, Saturday, 12 May 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

no seriously, we need to take a stand against this right now

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

surely not mr scruff, though?

pshrbrn, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

my dear philip, YOU inspired this thread with this offhand comment

i realize i'm a sad motherfucker but i've never really cared for much humor in house music.

I AGREE ENTIRELY

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 12 May 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

waht is some 'humourous house'? Outhere Brothers? a load of other stuff that's basically pop music? you guys don't really like pop music - isn't that it?

blueski, Sunday, 13 May 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

'La La Land' was sort of humourous maybe.

blueski, Sunday, 13 May 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

i'm honored! i'm afraid i won't have much to add though. i am curious what you think of scruff though? i've always liked his ok -- he's certainl a phenomenal DJ, and who doesn't like tea? (actually wait, i hate tea. but still.)

pshrbrn, Sunday, 13 May 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

i don't like a lot of pop music, no.
though i will add this caveat: there's actually quite a bit of humor in green velvet, but it's so fucking dark that it works for me.

pshrbrn, Sunday, 13 May 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

Both Mr Scruff and the first two Lemon Jelly albums had their moments, although admittedly I haven't been remotely interested in picking up either since 2002 or thereabouts. Most of the 'humour' in this stuff (WHICH IS NEVER FUNNY) tends to revolve around the samples, which kind of does the music itself a disservice I find.

This was all the chill-out end of Big Beat, wasn't it? People who are Down With The Kids, what's the 00s equivalent?

Matt DC, Sunday, 13 May 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

Scruff's 'Chicken In A Box' is still the bomb, where'd that beat come from? it's not a jokey one. the Scruff track that's actually called 'Cheeky' is good anyway.

Fila Brazillia had some seriouscat housey moments maybe even purists would like - early release 'Chemistry' is great, 'Slacker' was quite microhousey for '96. they insisted on deliberately 'kerazy' track titles much of the time but they do have a bunch of good tracks if you like what is basically ambient jazzfunk at all. i listened to them a LOT 7 years ago.

blueski, Sunday, 13 May 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

The problem is it's called 'Chicken In A Box' - it's the forced humour that's immediately offputting.

This is Hairdresser Dance really, isn't it? The sort of stuff you always hear when getting your hair cut in upmarket/gentrified areas that says 'tasteful' or 'trendy but not too scary, in case you thought we were going to dye your hair green while you weren't looking'.

Also this is another reason why people should never try to market themselves to hipsters (which they did six years years ago). If any of these people had hit on a formula to selling dance music to the under tens that actually worked (and didn't involve cartoon character cash-ins) then they would be raking it in.

Matt DC, Sunday, 13 May 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

much of the time i hear the song before i know what the title is so have already made my mind up on whether i like it or not. they don't really bother me.

blueski, Sunday, 13 May 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

ARK is humorous

lfam, Sunday, 13 May 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

Trayce, Sunday, 13 May 2007 02:52 (eighteen years ago)

defend the indefensible: hollyoaks house

tpp, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

in my mind every night mr scruff plays at every students union in the country alongside the scratch perverts or DJ yoda or some, you know, 'real' hip hop like fucking ugly duckling

tpp, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

that shit is fucking dreadful too

it's all STUDENT stuff, student house, student hip-hop, die die die students

lex pretend, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

and stevem you know i love pop!

lex pretend, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

lots of suspect projection and tedious straw men here

blueski, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

Haha yeah I literally don't think you guys could be picking off easier targets than these lot

DJ Mencap, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

Do people still 'respect' Coldcut enough (did they ever?) for them to escape this? They seem like the foundations of a lot of what's being talked about

DJ Mencap, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

student dance now = pendulum and yr justice stuff, a bit. i saw booka shade live at leeds university last week, i'm not sure that proves anything though.
