Buying a fairly cheap amplifier and speakers in the USA - help!

We're currently shipping all our stuff to America, and we're keen not to send the stereo unless we have too (so we can use it in the meantime). It would cost us about 40 quid to ship it and get an appropriate stepup etc, so if we can buy something to use while we're there for about $200 then we'll do that instead. All we want is an amp and speakers; the current set were bought about a decade ago in Richer Sounds for about 200 quid, and are OK but nothing special (Kenwood amp/Gale speakers, don't know much more than that).

Anyway, does this sound like a reasonable price? Where would we look? Just tried the websites of Amazon/Best Buy/a stereo shop in Kalamazoo, and they all had nothing, or were too expensive. Am I way off budget, or looking in the wrong places?

Well, you could certainly get an all-in-one boombox-type system for $200. Separate amp and speakers, seems like they're probably have to be used.

$200 is not enough for even barely decent separates. $400 could get you something simple which would sound ok. For less than that, you'd better get lucky in the classified ads.

I think Tivoli might make a (pretty nice sounding for the size) mini-system for somewhere around there. (Checks website).

The Model 2 ($199) has two speakers, one of which includes an am/fm tuner. You can hook it up to an external input (like an iPod) and also get a separate subwoofer ($80). We're not talking large or roomshaking here, but it's a very nice sounding small stereo.
