Grouped TIB & BDC together due to overlap (plenty of room for repping for one or the other in the discussion). Also included Japanese Whispers because that era of the Cure needs representing.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'll still take the luminous C-100 I created in '91 over any of their studio work, but I'll take The Head on the Door over anything except maybe the underrated Wish and let Ned and Dan take it from here.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 12 May 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, what about the new one none of us have heard yet? I wanna vote for it!

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 12 May 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

(Actually, I voted Disintegration. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't win.)

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 12 May 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't wanna wait till August to make this poll!

I'm leaning heavily towards [/i]Disintegration[/i] but Faith, Japanese Whispers, and The Top are all too attractive to me right now for me to cast a sure vote.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

fuck nuilx

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

I chose Pornography.

Do we really need two weeks for this?

onimo, Saturday, 12 May 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

my vote goes to faith.

funny farm, Saturday, 12 May 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I should have made the end date way sooner on this

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

Argh damn you Curtis!

Trayce, Saturday, 12 May 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

pisces, Sunday, 13 May 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

pornography, easily.

Just got offed, Sunday, 13 May 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

seems like they have more albums than that.

keythkeyth, Sunday, 13 May 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah but arent a lot of them comps and live albums and things?

I am so torn btwn Pornography, Faith, Disintegration and Head on the Door, arrrgh.

Trayce, Sunday, 13 May 2007 03:48 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and the Top.

DAMMIT.

Trayce, Sunday, 13 May 2007 03:50 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Faith but my finger hovered over the mouse for a long fucking time.

Lostandfound, Sunday, 13 May 2007 06:52 (eighteen years ago)

My top 5:

1. Three Imaginary Boys / Boys Don't Cry
2. The Head on the Door
3. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
4. Seventeen Seconds
5. The Top

nicky lo-fi, Sunday, 13 May 2007 07:01 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for seventeen seconds. it came from the guts. and then i realised that there is also faith which i would much more listen to theses days. not sure if it is only because i don't know it as well or if it is even more striking in its calm, restrained way.

alex in mainhattan, Sunday, 13 May 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

Voted "The Top", which is their best "pop" album. Also like a lot of the earlier "darker" stuff though. And "Wild Mood Swings" is terribly underrated as possibly their second best "Pop" album.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm. Voted "Head On The Door", I mean.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Faith, but it could have been Pornography or Seventeen Seconds on another day.

aldo, Sunday, 13 May 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

OK I voted for the Top. Mainly because of the titular track, but also cause of "Dressing Up" and "Birdmad Girl".

Trayce, Sunday, 13 May 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

my top 5:

1. Seventeen Seconds
2. Faith
3. Wish (personal memories, love story etc.)
4. Disintegration
5. Three Imaginary Boys / Boys Don't Cry

alex in mainhattan, Sunday, 13 May 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

Geir, I am glad you made that clarification post because you were about to melt my brain.

I am having the same reaction to this as I had to the Prince singles poll; HOW CAN I DECIDE????? A few years ago, it would have been Pornography without question, but now...? There are five albums I want to vote for with different reasons behind each vote.

HI DERE, Sunday, 13 May 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

I'm probably gonna vote for 'Disintegration' but I'm gonna wait a while (a little) before casting my vote. I'm glad to see all the love for 'The Top'.

baaderonixx, Sunday, 13 May 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

The Top is awesome, I can't believe the two-star AMG rating. "Dressing Up"! "Bananafishbones"! "The Top"!

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 13 May 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

"Piggy in the Mirror"! "Shake Dog Shake"! "The Caterpillar"!

HI DERE, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

indeed!

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

Really, the only song on their that I have any misgivings about is "Birdmad Girl" and that's just because I'm not convinced by the verses; the pre-choruses and chorus on that song are all great enough to make me get over those misgivings, though.

HI DERE, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

I was brought up (from age 8) on early Cure. The Head In The Door, Faith, Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds, and especially The Top (everyone here OTM, it's awesome, and the title-track is the scariest song of the 80's, a real masterpiece in dischordant fear, and moreover one of the most convincing aural portraits of 'the other side' I've ever heard) were on constant rotation on our lengthy car-journeys.

However, Pornography was the first. And it's still the one most firmly ingrained in my head. Aged 8, I couldn't quite comprehend the nihilism of it all, but I could definitely sense quite how kickass it was. I reckon that it's been one of the most important records of my life, in terms of how it shaped my early listening habits.

Maybe, just as HI DERE has stated, I'll move on from it later (possibly to The Top, possibly to Disintegration, both of which are superb), but for now, it's as good as it gets.

Just got offed, Sunday, 13 May 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Really, the only song on their that I have any misgivings about is "Birdmad Girl"

I love "Birdmad Girl", one of the greatest basslines in their catalogue and that delicious "Oh, I could beeee... lalali lali" bridge... "Give me it" is the one I'll throw away. Some days "Piggy in the Mirror" is my fave Cure song.

baaderonixx, Sunday, 13 May 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

"Give Me It" was, for a while, one of my favorite songs of all time.

SLIT THE CATS LIKE CHEESE
AND THEN EAT THE GREEN STICKY THINGS
SUCK HARDER SUCK HARDER
SUCK YOUR INSIDES
INSIDES OUT

so awesome

HI DERE, Sunday, 13 May 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

3IB for me

Dr.C, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

Japanese Whispers shouldn't really be included, since it was a compliation.

mcs0223, Monday, 14 May 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

It was, but it is so cohesive and distinct that I'll always think of it as an album.

baaderonixx, Monday, 14 May 2007 10:28 (eighteen years ago)

My first was that a lot of folks were going straight to Disintigration - thanks for not letting me down ILM! It shouldn't even make their top 5.

I voted Kiss Me, Kiss me -- if only for it being being a double album, but, it is hard to find much fault with Seventeen Seconds

christoff, Monday, 14 May 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

circa1916, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

I could vote for any album up to and including Disintegration, depending on the mood I'm in. I also like Wish and Bloodflowers, but not as much as the first 9. Wild Mood Swings and The Cure are both awful save a few songs.

LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

Disintegration by a whisker from Kiss Me x 3.

If it were listed, I'd probably actually go 'Standing On The Beach' - the (tape only?) rarities "B-side" is simply awesome.

SeekAltRoute, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

You left out Happily Ever After, the doublepack combining Seventeen Seconds and Faith. That would've been the easiest pick of all...

pshrbrn, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Faith for sure

Mondo Gnarly, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 03:48 (eighteen years ago)

Disentegration, although Faith is great too. The first 2 and half cd's from Join the Dots.

Wish is underrated, its the last consistently good album they made, although they were basically finished after it, - both artistically and comercially - in the UK anyway, (bar the occaisional special moment, e.g. The Last Day of Summer, Treasure, Out of this World).

flowersdie, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

"Maybe Someday" is pretty great.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

I will rep for "Lost" until the day I die.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

thanks for not letting me down ILM! It shouldn't even make their top 5.

hey now let's not be crazy here

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

I've often wondered why they left the best song on Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me off the CD release.

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'm waiting to see if someone complains about the absence of Mixed Up.

o. nate, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

For me the problem with Disintegration is that by that time Bob was (just about) better at the pop stuff so the grim material plods horribly. To some extent this applies to the moodier stuff on KMKMKM. When they were all about doom and gloom in the 17S/Faith/Porn era they did it rather well. There was a sort of austere utilitarianism around the 3-piece line-up (I'm not counting M. Hartley's contributions to 17S) that suited them, I think. I'm not a big fan of Porl Thompson.

I voted for 3IB fwiw.

Dr.C, Friday, 25 May 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

i must have been in space or something when this poll was carried out, but thank god 'disintegration' won in a landslide. it's simply the most lush, epic, touching, affecting, and closest-to-goddamn-perfect thing they've ever done. lyrically this thing shifts seamlessly between dreamlike trance and the dizziest extremes of reality. musically, it's a tour de force - almost as powerful in its restraint as its showcasing of ethereal and sublime soundscapes. vocally, rob keeps things appropriately low key, except in instances which call for emotional devastation (see the climax of the title track). fly me to the moon indeed.

for a second there we knew a darker, wilder Geir

Just got offed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

haha

he did end up voting for a very good record though - i'm thinking, as far as proportion of votes goes, 'head on the door' should be higher up there. it's my possible third favourite after the glorious 'faith'

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

"Head On The Door" and "The Top" aren't that different from each other. Surely, "The Top" is "wilder" in a lot of ways, and obviously way more "out there". But it does have the same kind of pop sensibilities to it as well.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

i'm surprised wish only got one vote.

akm, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

the real answer, by the way, is all of them

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 17 August 2007 06:42 (eighteen years ago)

OTM

best band in my life time.

Bee OK, Friday, 17 August 2007 06:48 (eighteen years ago)

the real answer, by the way, is all of them except for half of WMS (fixed)

HI DERE, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

there's a fixed version of "Wild Mood Swings"?

Mark G, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

There should be. That album should have been an EP.

I'm rocking Carnage Visors tonight

baaderonixx, Saturday, 7 June 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

Finally heard some post-Wish stuff tonight round a friend's house, he was playing some best of comp. Can't really say any of it was any good though. I can't remember if I voted in this poll, but if I did I would have voted for Pornography.

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 8 June 2008 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

I just finished listening to Pornography on a dark country-road car ride, 'twas excellent. The post-Wish material is really hit-or-miss for me, aside from Bloodflowers which I think is excellent (one song aside) and deserves to stand alongside the Cure's best work. If you wanna start post-Wish with an underrated album, that's the one to get.

stephen, Sunday, 8 June 2008 02:34 (seventeen years ago)

Okay woah woah woah. I totally don't remember this thread. What was I doing in May of last year that I missed all this? Grimly choosing Pornography over Disintegration and then being surprised at himself? Dr. C weighing in? Hell no, I do not remember this thread.

But I remember Mark G expressing this sentiment:

Their last decent Hit was "Friday I'm in love" which was ages ago and also seemed like "Their latest hit" as in "Loads more to come" but they have been very 'hit and miss' without the hit.

-- Mark G, Wednesday, May 16, 2007 11:05 AM (1 year ago) Bookmark Link

I totally do remember reading that at the time. Or else he said that in slightly different words on another thread.

I've met an awful lot of people in my life who are Pornography-heads and I fear I'll just never be one of them. Disintegration is and always will be the best Cure album. Which is really fucking sad because if Faith got into a fistfight with it, well...I'm not even sure who would win.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 8 June 2008 03:49 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

Disintegration 38
Pornography 17

this still upsets me.

Now there's

41. The Cure - Pornography [1982] (148 points, 9 votes)

in the 80s album poll and Disintegration is yet to appear.

Biggest surprise: the expertly calibrated guitar histrionics of "Shake Dog Shake," the best Cure opener.

go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 02:38 (thirteen years ago)

It's good but c'mon, Plainsong

pandemic, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:17 (thirteen years ago)

I like "Plainsong" a lot but I really don't understand how it is everyone's favorite opener; I'd put not only "Shake Dog Shake" over it, but "Inbetween Days", "One Hundred Years", "The Kiss" and "Open" (and on my more contrary days, "Lost" and "Underneath the Stars")

WHEY AHR MAH DREGUNS? (DJP), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

For some reason I don't think of "Inbetween Days" as an opener, but yeah it's one of my fav Cure songs ever. Wouldn't put any of those others ahead of 'Plainsong' however. The Cure are pretty mighty at opening albums huh?

pandemic, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

Having said that Robert's vocal on 'The Kiss' is one of my favourite performances.

OTM.

I only like a couple (v predictable) songs on The Top.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

i think "open" is a pretty worthy contender for best cure opener. it's just really effective at taking a seemingly innocuous situation and building itself into an inconsolable state with RS doing a really convincing job of tearing away at layers one by one and expressing himself in a really pure way. all the while, the music swirls and swaggers, threatening to buckle under its own drunken weight.

i also really, really like "the holy hour".

charlie h, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

DJP - OTM. I never really understood the hooplah for Plainsong, but I guess I prefer my openers rough and dirty a la Shake, Kiss or 100 Years.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

kiss me, kiss me, kiss me still leaves me a bit cold, save a few songs. such an annoying album title too.

charlie h, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

I actually really like "A Reflection" too, sets the tone of the album nicely.

funny you should ask about closers... What is the best *CLOSING* track in The Cure's discography?

WHEY AHR MAH DREGUNS? (DJP), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

2X Hah! - I am guessing we have already discussed everything that could be discussed about the Cure on ILM

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

i wrote the following four years ago and have absolutely no recollection of thinking or writing it, but will stand by it 100%:

:one thing i'll add is that it's really interesting how 'open' and 'plainsong' are about totally immersing yourself in something, while the closing track counterparts on those albums - 'end' and 'untitled' - exude a feeling of being totally withdrawn and defeated."

charlie h, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

yeah although you could also say that Open is all about feeling withdrawn and defeated

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

haha, you know the same thought occurred to me the moment after i submitted the post. but it's definitely a very absorbed and in-the-moment kind of song -- like it's doing its best to put up a fight. "end" on the other hand has a more "fuck this, i'm done" kind of vibe.
