Kim Deal vs. Kristin Hersh

Hate to have to do this but it's out there. Kim's been my thing for just forever - I mean I didn't like music before I liked The Breeders, or I didn't love it. But Kristin... I just don't know, but I guess I'll have to make myself vote at some point. That's prolly a lot of the fun with these polls - u eventually have to make the decision yourself!

Discuss.

A really tough choice. Kristin wins, if only for volume of output over the years.

This despite having caught 2 of the Pixies shows in Aust recently and my Kim-love still remaining at a record high.

SeekAltRoute, Sunday, 13 May 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

volume of output, true, but i still can't write it off that easy

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 05:57 (eighteen years ago)

I love both probably a little too much, but Kim Deal has one of the greatest voices EVAR!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 May 2007 06:01 (eighteen years ago)

bumpers

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

not going with kim would feel so bad to me

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

i think last splash is her most um, kristin album, cuz of all the diff. textures, moods

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

I love this enthusiasm, but the only Deal album I know is Pacer and I don't really have a clue who Kristin Hersh is (the chick from Throwing Muses?), I'm actually downloading things from both right now just so I can make an informed vote. Seriously.

I know, right?, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

oh my god that excites me so much! what are you gonna download? yes kristin is throwing muses chick with the solor carreer after. i wonder if i should like advise u on your downloads for your vote...

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

nah that might be a bias

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

Well I just don't know if the emphasis for this poll is on Throwing Muses then or solo Hersh. And does, for example, Gigantic count as a point for Deal (I much prefer I am decided and Tipp City btw) etc etc. This is fun. I always hated polls.

I know, right?, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

hehe, OK so Pixies DON'T count cuz she didn't front

Throwing Muses and Hersh solo count, as do Breeders and Amps. make sense?

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

unless did she write Gigantic though? cuz i guess that should count really

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

Tipp city is beauuuutiful

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

Stupid Limewire is giving me nothing and there's no instant gratification from Soulseek

Limewire is claiming that I've downloaded something before called High School Breeders Fingering

I know, right?, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

omg

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I really haven't, I swear

I know, right?, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

heheh well u need to keep these 2 women on ur radar, and make a decision if u can

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

Well when do I have until? So far I'm enjoying the Kristin Hersh things more, but not as much as Pacer, which I love, oh wait Glorious is... well I'm not gonna say it but.

I know, right?, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

omg Glorious... ::melts:: u have until the 18th, which just so happens to be my birthday, which makes me nervous. 24. anyway. the 18th.

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

i think u should downright by a coupla albums

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

xcuse me *buy

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

I have a marked presence for blase women, so Deal would win this easily, but Hersh has written so many other songs I care about.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

Hahaha! Christian Hearse!

And there is only one rubbish HMV in the town where I live and Tesco to buy CD's from (grim) so I'd have to wait for Amazon to send it to me, or for my trip to Dublin, but that is on the 17th so...

I know, right?, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

If this whole experiment works out though, they will be a long term investment.

I know, right?, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

oh it WILL be. u need to listen to other songs from that same album. listen to Under the Gun or Wild Vanilla, or fuck it just listen to Winter

Surmounter, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

Meh Kristin wins easily for me. I dont care much for Kim Deal, and was never much of a Breeders fan. I'm going to be murdered now aren't I.

Trayce, Monday, 14 May 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

omg, at least u fear the death!

Surmounter, Monday, 14 May 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I like "Cannonball" :/

Trayce, Monday, 14 May 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

; ) that's def later on my least of deal gems

Surmounter, Monday, 14 May 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

xcuse me *list

Surmounter, Monday, 14 May 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

If you haven't heard 'Hate My Way' from Throwing's first album and 'Me and My Charms' from Hirsh's solo album Hips and Makers, you can't vote yet! So I guess I will lovingly go with Hirsh who is so responsible for modern music and so doesn't get that recognition.

humansuit, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

omg Me and My Charms just killlls me, like in this really bizarre surreal way

Surmounter, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

Kimmy D.
anytime/everytime.

edde, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Surmounter, if you're out there, I think I'm leaning toward the Deal. Even if this copy of Pod means I have to turn it up really loud just to hear it

I know, right?, Monday, 14 May 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

i'm torn saying it but that makes me happy, the Deal decision

Surmounter, Monday, 14 May 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

well it's not final yet, I have til the eighteenth

I know, right?, Monday, 14 May 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

lol

Surmounter, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

"cannonball" is great but hersh takes this easily, mainly because muses >>>>>>>>> (etc) pixies.

J.D., Monday, 14 May 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

yes but pixies isn't really kim's

Surmounter, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

My copy of 'Pod' is the same. WTF with these ol' skool CD transfers?!

SeekAltRoute, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

Pod is just so clean

Surmounter, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

Pod is an all-time fave of mine. But I gotta go with Hersh.

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

I guess volume of output makes this a really tough question, cuz i think if kim had as many albums as kristin did, i really don't know that i would have the audacity to start this poll. as it is, i'm not sure i can vote.

is it bad to not vote on your own poll?

Surmounter, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

if Title TK weren't such a weed-addled toss-off, it'd be tough. but it is, so KIM DEAL!!!11wun

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

tossed it right off they did. easy breezy beautiful The deal.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

so i think kristin plays with texture much more than kim deal, whose songwriting really shines.

Surmounter, Thursday, 17 May 2007 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

revelations ; )

Surmounter, Thursday, 17 May 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

Kim Deal, the love of my (alternate imaginary) life.

The Deacon, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

the early muses stuff is so good, have to go with kh.

Edward III, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

OH MY GOD! 1 vote SHORT of a TIE! BECAUSE I DIDN'T FUCKING VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!! dang that's some close shit tho

Surmounter, Thursday, 17 May 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

Those are some good results. Very even, with the goddess of alt rock on top.

humansuit, Friday, 18 May 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

oh my lord. a goddess and an angel... i can't believe i didn't vote, but i still don't think i can.

Surmounter, Friday, 18 May 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

Deal for me, but I forgot to vote. It would have been a tie!

I know, right?, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

So I got into Throwing Muses with University which I still think is the best album overall. I don't really like anything before that, in terms of anything between the first album and that. But I also loved Tango - some say it is not mixed right, with too many soft songs back to back, but I don't really care. And then, of course, there is Hips and Makers which blew my mind. Easily Hersh's best work. I think that album puts her at the top amongst the greatest songwriters in rock for sure.

In college I discovered the In the Doghouse reissue and that just blew my mind again, since I didn't even know anything about the first album. I don't love it universally as many do, but Hate My Way especially and a few other tracks are unbelievable. I also was amazed that the original release date was 1986 (?) or somewhere around there, and I heard the Pixies actually opened for Muses.

So why didn't Throwing Muses get more credit as innovators? I mean, there's a long thread about how good or not the Stone Roses were, and how influential, but in terms of influential, doesn't Throwing Muses blow them out of the water? Aren't they responsible, along with the Pixies and perhaps others in the Boston scene, for starting alt rock, which travelled through Seattle / Chicago, and is the signature sound of rock and roll as it exists today?

humansuit, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

I think I read someone in the NME or whatever say the first Throwing Muses is the most astonishing record ever made by teenagers and I'd be hard pressed to think of anything that would beat it. But I'm not sure they can be compared to the Stone Roses in terms of influence (more's the pity) , at least in the UK.

My favourite Throwing Muses trivia - Kristin Hersh on her vocal style - she was trying to imitate Jello Biafra, so all the alt-chicks copying her are actually trying to sing like Jello!

Colonel Poo, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

Well I certainly think they are more universally influential than the Stone Roses, hands down. I just don't think people know it.

humansuit, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

which always used to piss me off, it's like one of those acts that affects so much of what your friends listen to but then you bring them up and they're like WHat? Who? weird

Surmounter, Friday, 18 May 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

yeah i'm still pissed i didn't fucking vote, kim shoulda tied at LEASTTTTTTTTTTTT

Surmounter, Friday, 17 August 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

five years pass...

"When I take the angel, I have a piece of you". Fuuuck, what a gigantic song. I don't think any other singer gets inside my head like Kristin Hersh.

I guess I could have revived a more relevant thread for this post. I was just roaming around in old threads. Sorry.
