Eurovision songs that WOULD have won if they had first won in their respective countries, or are just good, or are just funny.

Any idéas? For sweden, I feel like there were some able contenders, and this must have been the case in a lot of other countries too.

So, for moaning about your countrys choice of song, or for pointing out interesting songs that were weeded out in the nationals, I create this thread.

Looking back I don't actually see anything I remember and like in the swedish finals of 2007. So maybe I'm not onto something at all here...
OR you prove me wrong!

In Norway the most typical example is Wenche Myhre's "La Meg Være Ung" from 1964, a modern (but not too modern) pop song which would have been sort of a "Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son" already the year before that song won. The only reason why the song didn't win the Norwegian final is they had two different acts playing each song, and the jury's vote was partly based on a really awful version by some helpless rock band that couldn't play.

In the case of Sweden, there's "Cover Calais" from 1986, obviously.

"Dover Calais" I mean

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

did it have a nice melody that you could hum on your way to the camp?

"Tyttöjen välisestä ystäyydestä" ("About the Friendship Between Girls") by Ultra Bra was in the Finnish semifinals in 1998:

Everyone was expecting it to win, because the band was very popular here back then, but it didn't (I think the contender was chosen by a jury and not by popular vote back then). I'm not sure if it could've won the whole contest, it's a bit too old school maybe, but it is a great tune anyway.

The best Finnish entry ever is still "Reggae OK", which ended up near the bottom of the list. It isn't only in recent years that the best songs have been treated unfair.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

Did they hilariously black up to perform "Reggae OK"?

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 13 May 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

This was during the era when everyone and their dad would use a reggae beat, and I guess it couldn't be interpreted as particularly "black". Unless "Dreadlock Holiday" and "Haitian Divorce" were "black" too, that is....
:)

Here's Riki Sorsa performing "Reggae OK":

Gotta love his outfit, and the fact that they have accordion on a "reggae" tune. Also, the accordionist is Pedro Hietanen, a legend of Finnish underground music, who played keyboard with the seventies prog rock band Wigwam.

Though the best song Finland has ever sent to competition is no doubt "Lapponia":

Tuomas, Sunday, 13 May 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas, is that awful blonde fairy woman who was presenting bits of it actually famous in Finland?

chap, Sunday, 13 May 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

That Ultra Bra song is really good, by the way!

chap, Sunday, 13 May 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yup, the blonde woman was Finland's Eurovision entry a few years back (and she tried again this year, but didn't get enough votes). Her music is mostly awful.

Ultra Bra were a fun band, they were inspired by the Finnish communist song movement of the seventies, and seventies pop in general. Here's a couple more of their videos:

I remember "Lapponia", even though I haven't heard it for 30 years, so yeah that must be a good one.

anatol_merklich, Sunday, 13 May 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe this should not have won over Ted Gärdestad, I cant decide, but it definitely should not have been LAST. 1979.

As for songs that did actually win the national finals, the best Norwegian entry ever "Alle mine Tankar" by Silje Vige from 1993:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8zw68WnttU

Followed by this one, "I'm Not Afraid To Move On" by Jostein Hasselgård from 2003:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmYbaq8fEy8

None of them won, but both did better than Norwegian entries usually do. The Silje Vige won also managed to get 12 from Greece and Cyprus in one of those very rare instances where they didn't give 12 to each other. Listening to the song, you understand why Greeks like it...

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

That said, the best entry by any country ever is Belgium 1980:

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

This song might have done better for Norway this year than the one we sent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kYE3wGbrB0

At least it's way better than the Andorra entry in the same genre that failed.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

Finishing for now with some of the craziest entries ever:

Norway 1978 (Jahn Teigen - the first one ever to get nil points):

Finland 1982 (Kojo):

Israel 1987 (Lazy Bums)

Germany 1998 (Guildo Horn):

Germany 2000 (Stefan Raab):

Austria 2003 (Alf Poier):

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

To get back to the question: my choice would be Nanne Grönvall's "Avundsjuk" (Sweden, 1998, lost out to Jill Johnson's "Kärleken är"):

mike t-diva, Sunday, 13 May 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

...and also Vanilla Ninja's "Club Kung-Fu" (Estonia, 2003, lost out to Ruffus "Eighties Coming Back"):

mike t-diva, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

Here is the one I initially referred to. The Swedes obviously picked the wrong song in 1986:

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

...and also Rosenstolz "Herzensschöner" (Germany, 1998, lost out to Guildo Horn's "Guildo Hat Euch Lieb).

mike t-diva, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

Given Germany's statistics in recent years, I doubt it would have done better than Guildo. Germany performs best when they are taking the piss.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, the Lazy Bums performance is classy!

This thread is not complete without Dschingis Khan:
