Ron Trent: S/D, C/D etc

no Ron Trent thread ever?

firstly: classic!

there's so much of it... I'm slowly investigating the Prescription back cat, but someone please help me map this out (also interested in his associates, label mates etc)

S: Altered States (Armando's Warehouse Remix), 12 Inches of Pleasure, Foot Therapy EP, Hip To Be Disillusioned EP, Morning Factory (this in particular is perfect, perfect loop house -- it could carry on forever, easily. even gets away with porno vocals!)

D: nothing I've heard so far, but I don't think I've ventured beyond about 1999.

D: nothing indeed! I mean there have to be a few formulaic remixes (he’s pretty recognizable if enjoyable anyway) but the originals likely sucked, ha ha. I too don’t know where to start (or how to end) with RT !

Last year’s "Drum" (on "Love To The World"): epic. Also from 2006, the "Sunshine" (Roland Clark) remixes were excellent. Watch out for his & Ndambi’s "You Can’t Change Me", out next month. It is just lovely, lovely and lovely.

"Dance Floor Boogie Delites" on Prescription, despite the low pressing, is a deep house tearjerker. Also search : "Dark Room", "The Dance" (Gallery Collective), Ani’s "Love Is The Message", the "Afro Nova" EP...

"Come Together" and "Make It Happen (Make It Right)" by Sundiata O.M. have a more aggressive, jungly vibe (that I cannot get enough of) but I don’t think I ever heard the "Paradise" record, sad face. Oh and the "Stresskill" 12" produced as Con-Fusion Kiddzz is one of my personal favorites.

Looking at Discogs I realize I'm missing a lot of Ron Trent, especially as Urban Sound Gallery, but I can recommend "Two Tribes Project" in the Sundiata spirit, the almost ambient "Morning" and "Introduce My Love", the Lucien dub in particular although it could do with even less vocals.

USG as well as the Distance & Clairaudience labels have a lot of good RT production and nicely lead you to Anthony Nicholson, who is closely related to Ron Trent and equally admirable, certainly deserving of his own thread. Another collaborator of RT is Jay Rodriguez but I never managed to grab the "Olajope" CD they did together as Batidos –the single "Tengo Sed" being excellent.

Chez Damier was among his main associates and is (co-)responsible for some of the best Balance & Prescription releases. And his "Close" is of course classic. A tune so simple it went over my head until I found myself singing it out loud years afterward –without hearing it and no cue other than being in love. Also search "Warfare" to sample his darker side. "A 2 ½ Step" is obv. a deep house classic, so is the untitled KMS#049 release from 1992. Lately he’s done a few for Trackmode I haven’t been able to find.

There are a couple of RT mixes on Deephousepage worth listening to, esp. #94 in the by now 1400+ list, done with Larry Heard.

about four years ago i saw him DJ at canal room, or whatever it's called now. it was good but he relied on the same on-board mixer effects (echo, etc.) a little too much.

My bad.. "Close" by Chez Damier is all right but I was thinking of "Closer" by Larry Heard/Mr. Fingers upthread.

i've been obsessed with ron trent for a couple months now, aside from some weakness in the early 00s i love stuff from just about every era of his productions. taking out the Problem Kidz 12" on Prescription tonight....

pipecock, Sunday, 19 April 2009 01:15 (sixteen years ago)

don't you mean the konfusion kidz? problem kidz are rocky and diesel from x-press 2.

and their stuff on paper recordings kicks ass in its own right, but not in a ron trent sort of way

new Future Vision label series is kinda underwhelming?

blunt, Sunday, 19 April 2009 02:46 (sixteen years ago)

ha yeah that's what I meant. I guess I was partying a bit too much this afternoon for record store day ;)

pipecock, Sunday, 19 April 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

I love a good number of the Future Vision records, not sure what could be underwhelming about them. Deep shit like that isn't gonna be slapping you in the face!

His new album is cool! Deeper and maybe more classic Ron Trent stuff than the last one (which I also loved), but brilliant also.
