never heard of it

The original is always the original and that in itself is a strong argument against voting for anything else. I still think I prefer Art Of Noise's version though.

Geir what are you talking about?

Matt #2, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

the original is always the original.

scott seward, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

I generally don't like the idea of making cover versions at all. I prefer singer/songwriters (or performer/songwriters in this case). But Art Of Noise made a funny take on the original which made it one of maybe 10-20 worthy cover versions ever.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, I don't see how original vs. cover factors into your "melody/harmony is the best" theory. Aren't there tons of beautiful songs with great melodies that were done by singers interpreting a lyric?

filthy dylan, Monday, 14 May 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

he's a goddamned idiot, stop engaging with him!

my fave is probaby this ultra-distored version that I got off a blog, i think it's by the "KNIGHTS OF JAZZ" or something.

haitch, Monday, 14 May 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

i actually like the original best! i thought the art of noise thing was corny.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

although i don't know if i've heard duane's version.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

i even think the grandmaster flash version is corny. it's an easy tune to get all cornball with.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

and you have to have the living stereo version too. first pressing naturally.

Wait, I don't see how original vs. cover factors into your "melody/harmony is the best" theory.

Because a cover version is blurring the credits for the music. The composer is the one who should have all the credits and all the honour.

The Cramps.

milo z, Monday, 14 May 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

Mr Snrub OTM. Though that LP cover is amazingly, wonderfully bad- are those nerve cells, or lava, or what?

Peter Gunn shoots holes in the very fabric of reality

President Evil, Monday, 14 May 2007 08:30 (eighteen years ago)

Duane Eddy's version is pretty perfect, it's all about the sax coming in and for once not sounding cheesy but sleazy.

The Wayward Johnny B, Monday, 14 May 2007 08:51 (eighteen years ago)

The One Way Streets cover Screaming Lord Sutch's Jack The Ripper mixed with Peter Gunn theme on one of the Back From The Grave comps, it rules.

I generally don't like the idea of making cover versions at all.

I suppose "Twist And Shout" by the Beatles does demonstrate some amelodic coloured rhythm dominate tendencies.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 14 May 2007 10:39 (eighteen years ago)

"Twist And Shout" by The Beatles, along with the other cover versions of those first albums, first and foremost demonstrate how much better they were at writing songs than any of their influences.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

rubbish.

Mark G, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

First and foremost it demonstrated how good they were at assimilating tracks for their own purposes and style.

Their songs got better. "I saw her standing there" was one of their best ever, but if you think the likes of "Little Child" are better than "Twist and Shout" well..

(fill in the rest yersel)

Mark G, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

I like Mancini's original best myself, those punchy horns. (Never heard Roland Kirk's version tho - didn't knw it existed, actually.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 14 May 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

the one from Spy Hunter

FUCKING HELL I CAME TO THIS THREAD TO SAY THAT AND I GOT BEATEN TO IT.

i'm impressed, mind.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

anyway. pulp's version is very good too.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

The Pirates, from Out of Their Skulls is the most raucous version by a long way.
